ok,so some might know, some might not.but there making a new planet of the apes movie. so after seeing the trailer the 1st time it got me interested. so far i have watched all but the last of the old movies, and i can tell you i was an instant fan. actually i watched the 1st about a year ago before the new ones trailer, but thats besides the point. while rise looks like its gonna be good,i cant help but see what looks like stuff thats going to go against the old movies. for me that might ruin the movie,as i dont like it when they change things up.they do it with books all the time and it always takes a little of the enjoyment out of it for me. so whats your opinion on the new movies relation with the old?

I'm a pretty big fan of the old films and have to admit I'm not very interested in this "remake/reimagining" ...
I didn't like the 2001 Mark Wahlberg remake ( Marky Mark and the Monkey Bunch) and I suspect this won't be much better.

yeah...while im not a fan of time travel (i like it,its just i dont like trying to figure out paradoxes) i think the whole 'came from the future' thing is better than 'smarty pants gas'.
the dogs and cats dying out and apes replacing them is way better than just experimenting on apes with some gas.

...It was certianly true of the original five films, after Chuck bought it at the end of " Beneath the Planet of the Apes" ( sorry if I spoiled that for anyone, films been out for forty damn years, you should have seen it by now)...the other three went down hill pretty quick...though " Escape" wasn't too bad.

Thing is, and I say this as a guy who's watched and enjoyed every planet of the apes movie, they're not very good. Not even the original, which is a half hour or awkward adventure movie, then an hour or so of hamfisted political rhetoric, finally finished with that image of the statue of liberty, which is ultimately the only thing the film is remembered for, because it's the only bit that's actually genuinely good (which in turn led to the very strange idea that the ending was supposed to be a twist).
The films get steadily worse after that, until it finally reaches its nadir with Battle for the Planet of the Apes and its stupid, stupid 'apes win by all lying down and pretending to be dead' plan. I enjoyed them because it's kind of fun to see people pretending to be apes, they've got a camp kind of charm to them and also because I was at uni and really didn't have anything better to do with my time. But lets not kid ourselves, they're not good movies.
This new film seems really pointless. The thing where apes rebel and defeat humans with guns was always one of the more ridiculous parts of the story, and pretty trivial to the point of the series, so I don't see how focussing in on that can produce a good film. It didn't the first time they tried it, so I can't see what's changed.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Sebs pretty spot on, the films aren't "great" by any stretch of the imagination...but that's besides the point..they were "fun".
The first three being the best of the series ( I'm in the POTA fan camp that thinks the series should have ended with Zira and Cornelius deaths.)...the other two ( one of which this remake seems to be based on)...not so good...even by POTA standards.
I love these films because I've loved them since childhood, but are they "great" films...no, should they ever be remade...hell no.

It wasn't the budget though, which I think was more than adequate for a film of the time (it was only in the lamentable Battle that the production started being really shoddy).
It's just, I mean... watch the first movie again. What is the point of that crappy adventure sequence at the beginning with the falling rock? How long do they spend screwing around between Heston getting captured the first time and his first escape? Seriously, outside of the very good end sequence and a couple of fun, campy lines, how much of that movie do you really remember fondly?
And that's the best of the films...
I mean, it's possible to say you liked something, and still recognise that it wasn't actually that good.

Yeah, there's just no point to making them again. The mix of goofiness and earnest politics that made the originals so much fun just can't be repeated these days. In part because Hollywood just doesn't understand how science fiction can be used to comment on greater social issues any more. The last Apes remake proved that, in amongst making everything as sciency and mindblowingly as possible they completely forgot to make any of it mean anything to the real world.

Exactly Sebs, part of what makes the original POTA series fun is the era the films were made in...Hollywood isn't capable of duplicating that sort of climate...it's a totally different beast now.

However, the plot in this latest seems worth watching.

It looks like an epic tale about a man and his monkey. I intend to see it, because Zerkis(sp - the guy who was the actor for Gollum) is playing Caesar. Of course the essential problem comes back to the premise. We hunt tigers, lions, and each other for sport. Do you think intelligent monkeys stand a does' chance in hell against the greatest predator ever spawned by the Great Speghetti Monster?

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Fitzz isn't online, which is a pity, but I'm sure older members will join me in a misty-eyed look at previous POTA films, many of which were a childhood staple such as battle for the planet of the apes - the finest B movie the world has ever seen. They don't make them like they used to:

You know, even though I loved this film as a child, I recall that even then I thought the dialogue was goofy as hell, particularly in the case of Claude Akins ( General Aldo)...my god, how OTT can you get.?

Yes.
might not even be all that fictional either..
The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.
"the play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king,
I really didn't like the Mark Walburg one. They didn't have Charlton Heston despite having the perfect role for him (The old dying father that even quotes Hestons famous line form the original). Now don't flame me if it turns out Heston just turned it down or was too sick or something.
But this looks like it's going to be an action packed man v monkey movie, so that will be fun, plus it looks like it's from the apes point of view,so probably no boring humans talking about their feelings.
