Release date is listed as "December 31st, 2011" by Amazon and Best Buy.
The reason being that EA is keeping its mouth shut on a firm release date. They don't want to let Actiblizzard pull the same garbage they did with Wrath of the Lich King and EA's last MMO effort.
I'm not sure why you have no idea "what this one is or involves" if you got the email. There's a link, that leads directly to a site that shows you everything.
Basically: every 'level' of the game includes the following items.
Pre-Order Exclusive:
Early Game access [Preorder, the vendor will give you a code. Redeem it on the SWTOR site and the account you have on SWTOR.com will be flagged for 'Early Access'. Once Early Access starts, you'll get an email that lets you know and you get to play before the game releases at no cost.]
Color Stone (virtual item)[this allows you to recolor your lightsaber blade and blaster bolts.]
30 Days Game Time included
The "Deluxe Digital Edition" is only available via EA's digital distribution system 'Origin'.
The above and
Includes 5 Additional Digital Items:
Flare Gun
Training Droid
HoloDancer
HoloCam
STAP
The "Collector's Edition" is pretty much the big mamajamma.
Limited Collector's Edition Includes:
Exclusive Gentle Giant Darth Malgus statue
Game disks collectible metal case
The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural as annotated by Satele Shan[artbook]
The Old Republic galaxy map
Custom Security Authentication Key[This I'm kind of surprised by. It's an authenticator, like what Blizzard sells for WoW accounts. Good choice though]
Music of Star Wars: The Old Republic CD
High-quality Collector's Edition box
Includes everything else, plus two more things that the Deluxe Digital does not.
Exclusive Mouse Droid
Exclusive Collector's Edition Store

That has all the pertinent information, plus pictures.

Whoa, with the goodies in the deluxe, it seems a case of 'go deluxe or go home' if the STAP grants any kind of speed advantage over the players without one, that will be huge.
Also mildly intrigued by the exclusive CE store? What does that mean, items only CE users can purchase for the game.
Odd.

Indeed it seems that it is items only CE users can purchase for the game.
Likely it will be custom tattoos, etc.
The STAP I think will just be a variant speeder bike.

Aye, if cosmetic only it might be a nice advantage, although seems bizarre in that case restricting it to only those who brought the CE.
Although knowing EA, I suspect there will be another store with DLC on launch day anyways.

You'd probably be right if BioWare and Lucas didn't have a hand in it.
BioWare would probably make it so that the 'store' with DLC will just be making it so that you can get the preorder bonuses later on.
Lucas, however, is kind of a licensing genius. You'll be able to buy Wookie hats, Ewok rugs, and Gungan capes.

They still have yet to tell us what the payment plan is, we know it's a monthly fee, which doesn't sit well with me.
I really would play the hell outta this game, if it had a lifetime subscription plan. As it stands, there are other games and more importantly Guild Wars 2 coming out around that time, and I'd rather not have to deal with a monthly fee.
I can go ahead and say that the game will have complications, it will do well in the first three months, but after that? Who knows.

That goes with any MMO anymore, you never know how it will turn out.
for me, the $15 a month doesnt matter, if i pay.. or if its free.. if its a bad game, im not going to play it, even if its free.
I have hope for SWTOR since its star wars, but i know. it could easily fail or not be what i want :/

I hope it does well too, but I know all too well what can happen.
Edit: I find it completely stupid they haven't announced the payment plans yet, and are taking preorders. That's right kids, preorders for a game that you don't know what the fee is going to be past the first month.
You know whats worse? They are stating there are LIMITIED quantities of the DIGITAL deluxe version of the game. Since when was data limited?
I get the feeling this game is gonna tank just by how they are acting, and I really don't want that.

If a game holds my interest for $15 a month I don't mind paying it. It is when I pay $60 for a game that at best holds my interest for one play through that is10 hours or less.

Warcraft didn't announce their payment plan until very soon to when the game launched. It might be that they're still finalizing payment plans, or keeping it under wraps to see if Blizzard raises or lowers prices because SWTOR is actually releasing. EA/BioWare has learned well from Actiblizzard in how to be sneaky, underhanded gits when it comes to undercutting the competition.
You know whats worse? They are stating there are LIMITIED quantities of the DIGITAL deluxe version of the game. Since when was data limited?

They're doing a limited release for preorders, physical or digital. They have a FAQ talking about it.
Why are supplies limited for pre-orders of Star Wars: The Old Republic?
BioWare has always had a history of delivering high quality experiences for our customers and we are dedicated to making sure that track record continues with Star Wars: The Old Republic. Our focus is on not only delivering a high quality game, but also in developing a thriving online environment. In order to ensure a great user experience we have decided to limit initial launch supply. Further supplies will be released post-launch.
It reads like marketing BS, but it might be that BioWare and EA learned from the mass failure that was Warhammer Online and so are keeping the server population at an artificially created ceiling at launch so they can make sure everything runs flawlessly.

Aye, I am drawn and repulsed at the same time. Drawn as it is a Bioware game, a MMO and about Star Wars. Repulsed, because EA will have its mark on the box and a say in its life as a MMO. Also not sure I want to pay that kind of money at the moment. Might have come out at the wrong time for me, in another year, I'd probably have said feth it and already ordered a CE.

I'm not really 'repulsed' by EA. They do some bad things, but very few games lately from EA have been what I'd call terrible.
W:AoR was a flop, but there was a lot going on to cause that. Right now, SWTOR is pretty much unopposed for being a scifi mmo and SW is, let's face it, a huge property.
I can't see EA letting this bomb, because if you can make a BioWare and Star Wars game flop...well, you're doing something REALLY wrong.

Until Dark Millenium Online comes out, but thats still a way off yet.
Mind you, If TOR is as good as Bioware and others say it is, it might be a stumbling block for DMO, before it even arrives.

I don't think we will, Fett. They know/suspect Blizzard has big projects that will draw people from their releases, release dates gives Blizzard a chance to make a big hubbub and draw those people away. We saw it with Warhammer, EA definitely knows what it was and is aware of that issue.
We've got a good approximation of one though, because they're making it clear that it's a "holiday season" release, and that the beta weekend will be in September.
We'll probably see the game coming out in late November/early December. Amazon has the game set as December 31st, 2011 but they do this whenever they have no definitive release date but know that it will be out this year.

WAR was the last collectors edition I pre-ordered. I played it for the beta/trial period, and then never again... (I even waited until after the first month or so to let them work out release teething issues) after that, I decided to wait for the reviews before ever committing my heart, soul, and tears to another MMO. SWG was a knife plunged deep
into my heart, everything that came after was twisting and turning... WAR though, finally pulled my weakened but still beating heart from my ribcage and fed it to the dogs.
