Tough-as-Nails Ork Boy

We are all aware of (and hate) the recent price increase that GW has levied against us all. But if you look at what infantry heavy armies have to deal with you begin to imagine that GW either hates or loves the horde army.
Look at the orks for instance. 1 box of boys has 11 models that box is ~25$. to max out your full 6 troops choices you need 18 boxes of boyz. simple math will tell you that's a fethload of money.
The 'nids and IG have it the same (provided the IG player is going with a blob list).
Marines...all you need is 6 boxes of tacs at ~35$ (I'll admit that's no small amount of cash either)
Yes I am using the retail price (but 20% off of a bunch of money is still...a bunch of money)
Simply, I would like it if GW would add a few more models to those boxes. I'm well aware that such a thing isn't likely to happen.

Orcs in Fantasy are pretty much the same. It used to be something like 18 Orcs for $33, now it's 10 for $29, and of course no one is going to use a regiment of only 10 Orcs. 30 is generally the preferred size of an Orc regiment.

I can't justify the Cadian/Catachan halfing and price rise, and I really don't like spending over $20 for 50 points of Guardsmen. However, the Ork Boyz box I can live with. Options for heavy weapons, a nob, tons of customizing bits including tankbusta bombs and the like to make tankbustas? That's how it's done! If the IG boxes came with extra stuff like that I'd be pretty happy.
GW loves horde armies because they make more money for GW. Fantasy has it worse than 40k though.

If you want to make a horde army in Fantasy, Mantic are probably your way forward.
Soon they may be the way forward for 40K too.

That's hyperbolic nonsense. I think their ghouls are better than the GW ones and most of their Undead range is very good. I've also been mostly impressed with their orc and goblin range so far. Not so in love with the elves or dwarves, but they are certainly not bad models.
Also GW makes so real stinkers... so there's that...

Indeed. Saying that Mantic's models "look like puke" is hyperbolic nonsense.
But if there's one thing we all know about a wargaming forum, it's that hyperbole is easier to spew than making reasonable, informed posts criticising or contrasting different ranges.

You are literally Hitler for saying that.
I don't think Mantic models are bad, but I don't find them as good as GW's largely. The price is hard to beat though.

If mantic release decent 'northmen' and 'heavily (spikey) armoured northmen' that scale well with the GW ranges, chaos, for example, then I'll buy a boatload.

Not to derail the thread further, but I just finished painting a regiment of Mantic skellies, and they look great from "tabletop" distance. I can understand a display painter not loving them, but as miniatures for gaming they are great (apart from the stupid swivel base thing).
GW loves horde armies because they make them lots and lots of money. I'm glad I bought all my Orks back when they were reasonably priced- my army at current prices would cost me 1750 euro. More than a month's wages.

I am just looking at Mantic from a painting perspective and I just really dislike what I see. A buddy of mine was eyeing their dwarves for a while and once he got his he had me paint them. And I did it because he was a friend but after that I vowed never to touch a Mantic model again. And in my humble opinion the sculpts have just gone downhill from there.

We don't? $35+ for 10 Steel Legion Imperial Guardsmen and needing 600 Lasgun models alone, notwithstanding Special or Heavy Weapons. Oh and this is for standard 40k, not Apocalypse or the like. Or my SoB army, needing just shy of 200 just Bolter armed Sisters for $17.50 for THREE, again without counting Special or Heavy Weapons. With Special Weapons for my SoB, I needed about 34 Meltaguns and 30ish Flamers and 12+ Heavy Flamers with each of those individual models costing anywhere from $12-15 plus tax.

Ah but that is an all metal army, and even then fantasy's plastic can trump it with Skaven (20 storm vermin for $50 and you need atleast 3 units or 20 Slaves for $35 and you need a couple hundred). While we do not really have any metal core troops (deamons dont count as no one takes plague bearers) I still find our core more expensive in the long haul.

Well that sucks, guess I should of looked before I posted as they are now listed as 'Unavailable', same with the Catachan Battle Force though a couple boxes in my hosue would argue that last November neither of them where. But still amazons boxes are a ton cheaper than GWs.

Even Marine armies have become bloated from when I started in 2nd edition. A basic 10 man marine squad was 300 points. Devestator squads cost a bomb. You only needed a couple of squads, some terminators and a couple of characters and a vehicle, stick on a bit of wargear and you'd be at 2000 point no problem. Other armies are a joke. GW have gone a long way from having fun with a few figures to pushing up the size of the average game, it used to be acceptable to run at 1000-1500, my impression is that 2000pts is the norm at many events. Then they continually make forces cheaper, my armies have effectively got smaller over the years as their total points cost dwindles. I gather that the Sisters of Battle list is turning the fairly tough Sisters into weaker cannon fodder, which means they will be cheaper points per head of miniature. If not then they are becoming weaker for the same points cost which will make them totally unplayable. Turning Sisters into a swarm army? Apart from the fact that will make them colossally expensive it just doesn't reflect the fluff IMO. Fantasy players seem to have it worst though. 10 years ago I found it daunting to start a skaven army, you needed so many figures and that's when they were 20 to a box for £10. I think it was painting all those tails and noses and little faces that got me though. At least my skeletons were easy to paint. Now Fantasy armies need to have a preposterous number of figures. GW both devalue your figures game-wise while putting the prices up. That assumes of course that they don't axe your figures all together leaving you to convert your stuff or leave it in a drawer.

Plaguebearers were end-all amazing in 7th when they could take Regen and Ward and laugh in the face of whatever was attacking them. Now they get one or the other, not both, and as such have been relegated to the shelves while horde-formation bloodletters hit the table. Coincidentally, bloodletters have these nice, expensive new plastics...

As a former " 40k only" player, I never understood the whole magnets in bases thing. It just didn't make any sense to me. People would talk about it and someone would mention storing their army on the side of the fridge and I thought they were all morons. Then one day someone decided to "help" me move a base of 50 skaven slaves. Suddenly it all made sense.
