I don't know how it is with you, but it has happened some times for me that I don't find my general/HQ made good enough to represent the chracter in the fluff, and thus made a new "Mk". I fid this quite interesting to look at, and thought it would be fun if we showed our various incarnations of our characters of various kinds. I'll show you what i mean:

I started Beastmen (at that time Beasts of Chaos) about one or two years after that book was released, and my Mk I Beastlord looked like this:

Then, I was inspired to green stuff a suit of armour on him. If you have the old BoC book, take a look at page 48 and look at Joe Hills Beastlord. That's where I got my inspiration from. However I wasn't very skilled in sculpting at that time, but in any case, this is how my Mk II Beastlord looked like:

At this point I had BTW both changed the name of him and his fluff.

Then accidently, I painted his (admittely quite odd) axe in a wrong way, so I switched it with a WoC halberd, so now as Mk III he looked like this:

Then, after about half a year, I decided I could do a much better suit that that. Thus I stripped him completely from colour and green stuff, except for the axe which I was very pleased with. As such he gained the look he has now, my Beastlord Mk IV:

How has your Mk:s of characters looked?

In your wardrobe, looking for Narnia.

That is pretty cool! I love seeing him evolve like that. The armour is really cool.
Unfortunately I only started about a year ago, and I finished my army leader just recently so I have nothing to contribute. :(

Some inspirational beastmen you've got there

There have been 3 instances of my Tau Commander getting a rework, the latest of which is admittedly not done, and the first of which is currently being repainted XD but I took a few quick shots.

This one is the oldest, but also the most recent to start getting re-painted...

This was the one I used for longest, strange round thing on his head earning him a special nickname...

And ironically, I managed to mess up the picture of the newest one, who is also not done and so looks freaking awful XD ah well!

Indeed interesting, would like to see how your third will look when he is finished.
I also have a WoC character, a Chaos Lord of Khorne who ahs a few different incarnations (I am working on his third right now). I would put up some pics of Mk I and II, but I don't have them right now. I'll show you all three when I am finished.

I like seeing how the characters evolve over time too.

I had a few changes mostly due to me wanting to have my Eldar have a more progressive background rather than the static so older leaders died off and got replaced or advanced through the ranks and got new armour to reflect it.

Starting off with the first autach, I decided this one got killed off when he ended up fighting about 20 genestealers and a hive tyrant by himself, he managed to take a couple out but still lost the fight.

He was replaced by the prince of the craftworld after I built up the size of the army a little more. However I haven't used him for a fair while so I decided he just vanished with the small force he was leading.

After that came the first farseer who after the army it was leading lost badly against some tyranids was demoted to a warlock.

The current leader of the army is the leader of the craftworld itself and also the twin of the white guy.

Unlike the others this one eventually got it's paint job fixed up a little rather than being replaced outright.

Then I stopped playing Eldar and started working on SoB more, swapping out the canoness model which I have no picture of in the old scheme with a conversion. Other than that there has been no replacement in that army yet.

I've had two incarnations of Dark Angels 5th chapter master Omas.....
This is his original form

MkI

I was quite pleased with him for a while but got fed up of the poorly painted face and fairly boring pose so I resculpted and he now looks a little bit like this:

MkII

It looks a bit better in reality but I wanted a close up photo to show the freehand..

I can contribute to this

This is my MkI Shas'El commander, painted him, along with the majority of my forces, the first part of 2010, as you can see, not the best work. I don't know why I decided to do that color scheme, but stuck with it

MkII, stripped and redone, with magnets and posing. As you can see, painting still coming along, the tag on the gallery says october last year. Still wasn't satisfied though

The fruit of my labor, Commander MkIII, he and the rest of the suits of my collection were all reposed and altered to hold a weapon in both hands like convential military. Painting is almost where I want it, and I really doubt I will change him anymore, I love this guy like a brother (Oh, and that is the same drone as in MkII, fun fact)

There it is, the journey of my suit and I, overall time 1 year, 8 months

I am working on my MkIII WoC Lord Destandor, is based on the Lord on manticore and a bloodcrusher juggernaut. While he's being made, I can show you my
MkI:

Yes, I made that axe's handle in green stuff. Plastic tubing was an unknown phenomena for me at that time, I made this about seven years ago.

Then when the Khorne lord on juggernaut was released it was natural for me to buy it instead, so this is my MkII Destandor:

Will probably be finished with the conversion of Destandor MkIII soon, it is only his juggernaut left to build. Then I must paint him of course, and better than his predecessor.

i originally planned to just take Borgut Facebeater and give him another name: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440078a&prodId=prod1130274
but when i saw his head when i got him, i knew i had to add the helmetless black orc head on instead.

and after three days, i decided to completely change him.

over time, he got a fur cloak, a new axe, a bigger jaw, another big tooth and a bosspole:

Might be a bit of topic but I do belive I have seen that MK II beastmen IRL or if it was the MK III, and I really like how he have evolved.

I don't really have pics, but mine undergo paintjob changes, and occasionally will get a weapon swap:
-For my Space Wolves, my Terminator Wolf Lord started out with a storm bolter and a rather lame paintjob, but over time I've touched up the paintjob and recently chopped off the bolter and put a storm shield in its place. (MKIII)
-For my Nids, I recently repainted my Hive Tyrant (so that'd make him MKII I guess)
-For my Lizardmen, I recently repainted my Saurus Oldblood, who looks far less-amateur now. (MKII)

That is actually a pretty good idea making a thread out of this since I do the same thing. As my skills improve and my inspiration increases I too get the urge to make new generals.

First I made this guy.

I thought the metal chaplains where pretty cool but I wanted to make a unique chaplain, so I bought the plastic commander set and came up with this:
Anon Alcota

After a while I thought this can be better so I started digging in my bitbox and after A while!
Anon Alcota MK II

Great stuff here By the way. I really enjoy seeing I'm not the only one with this problem of "itching" feeling of making things better.

Greetings.

Mine was my Chaos Lord, Zhurom. Was one of my very first models (can be seen by the crap painting ) Was later upgraded with the fantastic Chaos book with a bedlam staff, bird-head "chainfist" and some fancy new Chaos gifts. Even did a fantasy version of him for a local painting contest.

I really liked Rob Zombie back then.
