The question is simple: what kind of Necrons would you like?

1. The old ones: Scary, brain-dead metal robots who rise up, kill everything and then go back to sleep.
2. The new (rumored) ones: The Necrons with reason and intellect, who make alliances with other races and who even battle between themselves ( rumored fluff for new codex ).
3. Or some combination of 2 options above.

For Emperor and Imperium!!!!
None shall stand against the Crusade of the Righteous!!!

Right behind you...

The old ones. I think that it is a lot cooler to imagine crons as soulless monsters, obeying an even greater power who regards the mortal races as playthings. I can't help grinning to the idea of Necrons being some kind of undead idiots galloping around the galaxy swearing alliances, fighting amongst themselves and going; "Hey, have you seen my Gauss-blaster? Oh, here it is."

There is only the Emperor, and he is our shield and protector.

That's a tricky one. I think both have their place. I don't feel right about Necrons allying with other races though, that just doesn't seem... Necron to me. Who would they ally with and why? Don't they want to destroy all?

As Nicholas said, I think having the lords being able to think is a decent idea. I'm not sure how only some would get intelligence and others don't though.

Old ones, whats more scary than sentient life with atom destroying guns? Non sentient life, with atom destroying guns.
For a start they have no fear as they would have no emotions, it would scare anybody fighting them, would you be scared if an army of silent robots came and shot your friends. They feel no remorse no sorrow, they wouldn't stop unless they were killed or they phased out.
Edited for Grammer
With sentient i mean human(emotions).

The old ones, by far.

The old ones were terrifying, the undead remnants of an ancient civilization that long sold themselves into the service of horrible gods because they grew to despise all other life, and craved immortality, each one implacable and relentless to a man, utterly soulless with no purpose other than harvesting the galaxy. Although, one important caveat, although the Lords and Immortals are shadows of what they once were, they are not mindless like the Warriors are, being the favored servants of the C'tan and the first to enter their Living Metal shells. Flayed Ones were not mindless either, actually.

But yeah, the old Necron codex background was basically that of an ancient conspiracy woven by the most vile Eldritch Horrors within the setting, and the Necrons were wholly and utterly inhuman, silent in combat so their foes could not glean anything from their motives, why they were attacking. The mystery was a big part of the theme of the Necrons, their motives were unknown to all races but the Eldar, they wielded technology that was essentially magic to the younger races, and while not the greatest immediate threat to the setting, when they showed up on the battlefield they were rightly dreaded.

I haven't read Fall of Damnos yet, but from what I have gathered, it seems to have tried to "humanise" the Necrons, make them less enigmatic, and it seems the C'tan are rumored to be being removed as well. And well, I don't much care for that myself.

But yeah, now that my rambling is done, I prefer the old Necrons to the rumored Necrons.

The Old Ones - the fact that they were soulless, unrelenting, uncaring - that was why they were scary. That's what set them apart from the other races. If they can now think and act independently then they're no different to any other race, except they're made of metal. I seriously hope most of these rumours are wrong.

The new ones:

Batcrap crazy lords that spend more time insulting or offing each other than killing the enemy and go down like chumps to tac marines, or get killed in seconds by a single marine with a powersword. Dialogue that suggests that the writer was watching The Mummy and Dallas on twin screens while he wrote it..

Insane robots that come across as comical, rather than scary, and are about as effective as a wet tissue putting out Mauna Loa.

(perspective based mainly on Fall of Damnos (as we have little else fluffwise to go on)

Let's put it this way... remember how Damnos was supposed to be a rapid Necon victory, with the marines making a few daring evacuations and then fleeing for deep deep space?

Don't get too set on that idea

It's an ok read, for a BL book, but BL aren't allowed to have the IOM lose, as far as I can tell...

It's good until the Boys in Blue Drop Pods show up, but after that the phrase 'would not be denied' gets old fast..

I've read the Space Marines codex.

The Damnos Incident was changed to an embarassment on the part of the Necrons before Fall of Damnos.

Be nice if they could strick to the fluff in the main rulebook, since the Marine codex is always the next book after the rulebook...

You pretty much have a couple of squads of marines, Tigurius and a couple of dreadnoughts taking out an entire necron army, which is a touch much.

You also have necrons laying seige to a city that they can tunnel beneath or teleport into, for some reason..

Yeah, that's what I read in the Space Marines codex too.

I don't really mind them losing as much, since everyone sucks when Marines show up (Seriously, it is just not possible to justify Space Marines in combat being the equal to tens of thousands of Orks), but the other crap from Fall of Damnos sounds horrible.

I really don't see how they could have been going for anything else but a comedy with that.

Necrons in fluff and in table are not the same thing.
Like a Marine... On table 1 Marine is not that epic. In video game DoW 1 marine can't kill Ork boy with 20+ shots. In fluff 1 Marine can take down hordes of Ork before falling.
Necrons to, they are strong on table but slow and not numerous, in DoW they are the weakest race, in fluff they are LEGION of death that is HARD to beat.

I think that's what Brother SRM was agreeing with.

He said its not Realistic, not that it is

Gamewise Necrons are low I Marines. Just as tough, just as strong.

In the fluff they are supposedly the same, but tend to go down like they were made of tissue paper, including wraiths being taken down without causing at least equal casualties on the tac marines they're attacking..

Oh, and they have a Monolith being destroyed with meltabombs too, which opens a whole other can of worms

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Side Note: i rarely lose with Necrons, even at a tournament. If i do it's after inflicting massive casualties on the enemy, usually. Necrons aren't THAT bad on the table

Yes it was. A typical Kymes. His characters all act like problem ridden teenagers, his Necrons are about as threatening as Gretchin and the Spess Muhreens cut trough them like a hot knive trough butter.
Oh sure, there are some alibi losses but the marinewank is strong in that book. What saves the Fall of Damnos from being utterly useless is Sicarious. Here Kymes actually managed to write an interesting character.

Old Necrons. So old they ride on little hover pads. And when those pads crash the pilots pull themselves from the wreckage and keep advancing. Then the scarabs come along... without bases. And they jump on tanks and explode as the lone Necron Lord with his silly hat and cape of playing cards hops around the battlefeild with a bunch of his Immortals. And so old they look exactly like the Phalanx from X-men with all kinds of lenses and stuff stickin' out of their eyes.
