Read an interesting article here: http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/gaming.gadgets/08/17/finishing.videogames.snow/index.html?hpt=hp_bn7
To sumarize: On average, a person only finishes their games a 10% of the time!
Although many "core" gamers may lament the continual shortening of the single player experience, stats show the actually irl people want shorter games. As some developers put it: why bother making an epic 50 hour game when most people will only play it for a few hours?
The article goes on to detail possible reasons for this but personally I actually finish more games now than I was a kid. Mainly because back in the day games were insanely hard and almost impossible to beat!
Anyways, how about you guys? Do you "beat" your games? Always, Usually, Sometimes or Never?

Huh... And Here I thought I was weird for never playing more than 10 hours into GTA...
I almost universally finish all my games (Even ones I don't like). Most people I know do, which makes me wonder how accurate the polls on this are. I know over 100 people who play video games, and almost all of them play the games all the way through (ignoring those who never try). Maybe that's it though. I know lots of people who never even bother with single player and only buy games for multiplayer.

woops... I thought I was in 40k general for some reason..
Anyway, I nearly always finish my games, unless it's in games without reconnect/joining active games and you have people leaving all the time.
I'm looking at you DOTA.

Ya, the article talks about how there are many people who have put 67 hours into CoD and never loaded the single player.
Also it's not a poll, it's based on game completion acheivements/trophies and things like that. Some games actually record data on the way you play and send it back to the developer. Mass Effect 2 is one such example.

Well, I can see people not finishing ME2. I found that experience rather painful
I put thousands of hours into CoD4, but I still put about 120 into single player XD. A bunch of guys in my clan have never touched CoD single player so yeah there is definitely that.

Well for singleplayer, it really depends on how good the game is. Or how easy the achievements are to get

PC CoD4 had no prestige. I personally never saw the appeal. Tried it in WaW and wondered why I was giving up all my stuff for something that wasn't worth the time of getting it all back. But yeah. I played the out of CoD4

It really depends on the game for me.
If one aspect of a game, be it the story or the actual gameplay itself, is bad for me then 90% of the time I wont go back to it.
Of the 39 Xbox games I currently have I have completed 9 of them. There probly only about 35 there that have an actual story though.
So I would say I sometimes complete my games.

I always choose the games that are really difficult to complete to try and complete...
That said i love the single player of a game far more than the multiplayer.

Personally the only games that I haven't moved towards completing 100% are the Call of Duty games, because of the multiplayer. If a game has single player, and I like the concept of the gameplay or background, I'll finish the game.

Why you hating on CoD4 bro? That's the last one that was actually worth playing
I know I'm weird for actually liking shippement, probably the most hated map in the entire game, but hey even I can like a mindless slaughterfest where whoever gets the most airstrikes auto-wins

Then yeah i do.
I think it's wrong to even go on multiplayer without beating the singleplayer on normal first...

Just going off my Steam games list...
I own: 153 games (don't judge me, Steam sales...)
I have beaten: 64 of them
Cutting out the 16 games I own that don't have an applicable campaign (games like Audiosurf or Battlefield 2), I've beaten just shy of half of them. Which, according to statistics, is better than most, so hey!
And to be fair, there are a few games on my list that I didn't cut out, but probably could due to technical issues in running them in the first place (old games like Thief and Beyond Good and Evil that have issues running on modern operating systems). Interestingly enough, I've actually noticed that I have recently had a tendency to play halfway through a game and get distracted by something new, mainly due to Steam sales. Nice to know I'm above average in that regard.

I own 42 games for the Xbox 360, and have completed the story mode for all of them save three: Incredible Hulk, Dead Rising, and Lost Planet.
Didn't care for Lost Planet
Bought Hulk for $5 waiting for Prototype
I don't play Dead Rising for its singleplayer, I just load it up, kill some zombies, get board, stop playing it.
Haven't beaten Castlevania, Lords of Shadow, either, but thats because I got it nine days ago and just haven't had the time to play it as much, yet (Ch. 9)

I try to finish games. But sometimes different stuff will just call out to me. There was a time in 06 where I was finishing game after game after game... then in 07 I got into tabletop wargames. Every once in a while I'll go back to a series I'm trying to finish but I lose momentum. And then there are the games that are just fun to repeatedly play so they take up your play time.
