I usually complete my games, but then I primarily play single player anyway. Exceptions to this recently include Fallout: New Vegas, Red Dead Redemption, and LA Noire, but I blame that on getting them all at about the same time, and them all being huge games.
Before that I think the only game I hadn't completed was FFXIII, and I'm in the process of replaying that now with the aim of finishing it.

This depends what you mean by 'beating a game'.

If you mean finishing the campaign then always (as long as it's not a god awful game).

If you mean every side mission, every collectable, every achievement then only for the really good games. Games such as fallout take up hundreds of hours of my time and god only knows how long I'll spend on skyrim.

For example; in mass effect 2 I visited every single planet in the galaxy just in case there was one more mission I could do.

I play:
Imperial Fists - 9000 pts
Tyranids - 1500 pts

I always do. I've never managed to get all the trophies on any of my 5 ps3 games, but i'm still trying on Killzone three and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (88% sooo close).

However, I always go online multiplayer before finishing the singleplayer. I start with singleplayer, but inevitably end up online, unless its Demon Souls in which case I was always on the multiplayer.

You've got to be kidding me.

That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard today, and I just had a conversation entirely using wombles references.

Personally the only games that I haven't moved towards completing 100% are the Call of Duty games, because of the multiplayer. If a game has single player, and I like the concept of the gameplay or background, I'll finish the game.

Why you hating on CoD4 bro? That's the last one that was actually worth playing

I know I'm weird for actually liking shippement, probably the most hated map in the entire game, but hey even I can like a mindless slaughterfest where whoever gets the most airstrikes auto-wins

I'm not hating on anything, it's just that playing shipment with that many people sounds like you would stay alive for 10 seconds at a time.

Not if you do what purpleflood does.

I think the results may be a tad inaccurate. There are a lot of multiplayer central games out, and there are many, many people who only play the multiplayer. I'm basically talking about CoD. The games that have story modes of any length are in the minority now.

People want shorter games do they? Well I'm 30 hours into Just Cause 2 and loving it (and I'm only 20% done).

I finish games, and I hate these pathetic full price games that have 4-6 hour campaigns. feth that.

+1

I like a game I can sink many many hours into without it being to repetitive and boring. Demon's Souls alone accounted 100 hours gameplay before I felt bored with it.

@iproxtaco
CoD isn't a primarily multiplayer game. Most of them have very good campaigns with a lot of variety in gameplay. They just happen to have very popular multiplayer as well.

If we are talking the single player portion, than aye, pretty much everytime unless the game is pants.

If we are also talking about Achievement wise and getting games into the fully compleated part fo the 360 hud. Well if the games would let me. *Sniff* The three I've got closest with have all had bugs that made it impossible to finish.

I finish most of my games. Off the top of my head, the only ones I haven't:

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth(my original Xbox is still packed from moving)
Doom 3(same reason)
KotOR II(because it's a buggy ass game that always freezes when I reach a certain point in the story)
Fable III(because where I'm at is all about collecting money)
DoW II(because I just haven't taken the time due to: )
Fallout 3(because it's a long ass game if you want to do everything)

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I usually play the single player on easy mode actually, it gets the story out of the way without me having to throw a controller through the TV and gives me the basics of the game's controls.

I've finished the story for New Vegas, but didn't save it because I didn't want to stop playing.

I also haven't finished playing LA Noir(although I am finally on arson desk) mainly because TF2 became free to play, and I wanted to play the PC version because it was a lot better than the PS3 version but I didn't want to pay twice for the same game.

I wrote that badly...Battle Toads is one of the three I have not finished and am not playing.

I have no intention of finishing that one, but I am close to a platinum on Demon's Souls. I doubted that one for a bit.

Probably work

I finish games that are worth playing. I've logged about 80-100 hours between Ultima 7 and Ultima 7: Serpent Isle, because I HAD to find everything, and those are still the two best sandbox games I've ever played.

I've replayed Fallout 1 and 2 trying to find all the stuff I miss and play the game as a different type of character. Apparently you can just outright pass the Vault City Citizenship test if your stats are right. Same story with Planescape: Torment. Still an amazing game.

I finished Fallout 3, if only because I just wanted to get it out of the way so I could go back to wandering around aimlessly, until the brick wall of a XP cap killed any sense of advancement for me. Replay value consists of "well, what if I want to use energy weapons instead?"

Deus Ex was amazing. I replayed that in preparation for the new game. I wish Invisible War wasn't so bad. I finished Diablo, Diablo 2 (and expansion), Starcraft, Red Alert, Red Alert 2, Doom, Doom 2, Quake (and expansions), Quake 2. Uh, a couple of the Commander Keen games. The first two Duke Nukems (the old sidescrollers). DN3D. I'm sure there have been others.

They don't need to make games shorter, they need to eliminate that point in the game where I just finished some major turning point, and they game tells me I need to do it again, except it's bigger and harder this time. Take Diablo 2 for example. Once a year or so, I get a strange urge to play D2, and I install it and get to work. The entire time, I'm thinking "feth yeah, this'll be awesome." Then I get to the desert, and all my momentum stops. I then start looking for someone to rush me to Act 3. I THEN start looking for someone to rush me to the second half of Act 3. At this point, the momentum starts back up again. Acts 4 and 5 are awesome as well.

If you're wanting to 'do it right the daedalus way', then you should fix the game by either:

- Preferably, make Act 2 and Act 3 fun and exciting, and don't just make it feel like climbing a mountain only to see you have to go back down it and then up an even larger, identical mountain.

- If that's impossible, strip out the suck. Remove Act 2 and 3, or at least the grind portions of them.

They could have made Act 2 more about the horadric artifacts and wrote in more backstory. There were at least two quests in that act that felt like filler. They could have also reduced the size of the desert to about half of what it was. I'd have felt more inclined to take the first half of Act 3 seriously if they did that.

Fallout 3 and ME2 are probably some of the only games were I did everything too. I didn't neccesarily do every quest in FO3, especially the evil ones but I must have gotten every gun and cool item in the whole thing.

Anyways, we're just talking beating a game not all that craziness. Generally, the developer has a main quest/campagn/story that has a beggining and an end and would very much like you to see the whole thing but kids these days - they just have no attention span.

Maybe it's me getting older and grumpy or maybe today's games really start going downhill. I used to finish 90% games I started. Now I finish maybe 10%. Usually I play a game for a day and get bored. Last one I finished was Portal 2 in April.
It looks like I'll finish Bastion (playing currently) and hopefully Deus Ex if it matches my expectations.

That is so criminal. Call of Duty used to be known for its great story modes, but now all the kiddies just play Zombies and MP.

CoD 1-3, 5, and 6 all had excellent story modes.

I've done my favourites several times. Other games you can't 'win' as such, it's pretty hard to win a championship in a lot of the driving games I have, it's more the participation that counts. well for me anyway.

I've been gaming for 20+ years so have had a few games. All the ones that were major purchases - I've finished.

Yeah dont see the appeal of achievements. Collecting every gold nugget etc at least involves some exploration, the dumb halo ones you get either involve saintly tolerance towards frustration and restarts or insane luck/glitching. Being good at videogames is a genuinely pointless skill imo, no loss on my part, ill give 100% achievements a miss thanks.
