They're Terrible. Hopefully in the codex update we should be getting in the middle of 6th edition we should get new characters(honestly, i wouldn't care if they killed both Helbrecht and Grimauldus off). So, i would like to know what you guys might like to see for special characters and or rules in general. A Unique Emperors Champion might be nice.
You can't kill Helbrecht off! He's at the front...
They see me stridin', they hatin'...

He looks like a badass, but the model and rules for him suck, and why does he take Neophytes in his command squad? And why does one of them carry a sacred banner??

Of course there will be new stats for Helbrecht and Grimaldus. What they'll be, I can't say. Probably cool. Eternal Warrior for either Helbrecht or Grimaldus, at the least. I doubt they'll both get it, but an arguement can be made for either.
I'm also doubtful on a named Emperor's Champion. They are appointed right before each battle. A named one would defeat the whole point.
A named Dreadnought would be nice, as would Iron Clad Dreadnoughts and all of the weapon options that the other Dreadnoughts get.
We'll probably get the storm raven. It's the new hotness and is an assault vehicle. Everyone got our LandRaider Crusaders, so it's only fair.
I'm preparing myself for the loss of Tank Hunters on our shooty terminators, as well as 1 heavy gun per 5 terminators. Sigh...
Two attacks base on the sword brethren.
Finally, last but not least, saving the best for last, ending on a high note: free frag and krak grenades.
Helbrecht is a cool model, and Grimaldus is a seriously pimpin' chaplain. Their rules aren't great, but the same can be said for most 4th ed special characters before Eldrad came along.
I think Sword Brethren should have 3 base, 2 for just being frenzied zealots that spend years dedicating themselves to close combat, and another for having terminator honors(they are trained for it right after their induction into the marshals household) so 5 on the charge for each would be great!
More focus on the Knightlyness of the Templars would be cool, like a combat focused dread similar to the Ironclad.
Also...Whirlwinds, just because inside the back cover of the codex, their is a star map listing the crusades and their contents, and several of them have Whirlwinds, which are not actually in the codex...
Why should they have more attacks than Khorne Berserkers? Let them be at 2, like vanguard veterans or sergeants. The only non-IC Marines with 3 attacks base are champions in Marine Honor Guard units. I think cheaper Crusaders and Blessed Hull on more vehicles for cheap would be cool.
I think Neophytes should be able to take some kind of special weapon, maybe minor special weapons.
I like the bombardment idea, and since Black Templars are so famed for their devastating shock and awe drops, i think their should be more of an incentive for taking drop pods, maybe being able to Assault out of them? But a draw back to it might be no shooting or no shooting or running when they come in?
Commisar Von Humps wrote: i think their should be more of an incentive for taking drop pods, maybe being able to Assault out of them?
Nononononono, this is a bad thing. Drop pods are very thematic for Black Templars though, and it would be nice if they had some advantage for taking them. Perhaps They could have more control over when their drop pods drop, or get them for 5 points cheaper or so. Personally I'd love to see drop pods with the ability to be used as weapons like in Dawn of War II, but that's just a dream for now!
I do think Neophytes need more options though. I can't remember if they can't take shotguns or they can't take bolters - either way, it's a bothersome oversight. The option for a plasma pistol/power weapon would be nice too.
Neophytes can take shotguns or a bolt pistol and CC weapon.
As for Drop pods, maybe them having access to weaponized drop pods like the forge world platforms would be cool, and could be used to shield other units and provide fire support.
I'd like to see some new rules for Helbretch. He's an awesome model and he's best buddies with Yarrick (<3) but his rules aren't exactly good. I don't care much about the Chaplain, though. He never looked very appealing to me. It must be the lack of Skull Helmet. Anyways...
I do think there should be some perks on the Drop Pods, and Orbital bombardment would be nice and fluffy, but something tells me we won't be seeing it anytime soon. Using Drop Pods as weapons makes a LOT of sense; maybe in a similar way to Tank Shock/Ramming?

Yes, I have recently started a Black Templars army, and love everything about them. My hope is that they will totally replace Helbretch with some other High Marshal.
Personally, I like the fact they have no uber special characters. That is the carry over from their old edition; special characters that don't really do much besides let you have a different model and base your army on fluff. It's refreshing to see an army made up of generic guys for a change instead of everyone at a tournament playing the same characters over and over.
Player 1 "What army are you playing?"
Player 2 "Vulkan. What army are you playing?"
Player 1 "Mephiston."
Player 3 "I brought Blood Angels!"
Player 1 and 2 "Lol silly noob, Blood Angels aren't competitive. You should play Mephiston."
That being said, any special character that gives bonus's to the army without being ultra-rule-breaky or absolutely-needed-to-win is fine with me; armies with variety are always a plus

A named Emperors Champion? I feel like you haven't read the fluff behind ECs.
I don't even like BTs and I think:
Grim needs to go. He's not universally unpopular, but it's a close race.
A discount for drop pods
Storm Ravens, there's no way these won't appear in every codex.
Possibly a discount on LR Crusaders or better and cheaper wargear.
Sword Bretheren with 3 base attacks? Never happen.
There has to be a points balance to encourage basically a drop pod foot slogging army following 6ed SM who knows what that'll be.
Alternatively to lowering the cost of DPs they could raise the cost and include an Orbital Bombardment one per drop pod on the turn it enters.
For the actual title of this thread.
Helbrecht obviously will get a rules update
A terminator IC would be interesting
I want to see a flail wielding, mechanical steed riding IC...

Grimaldus isn't going anywhere; his model is boss, his fluff is awesome, and he's got some good ideas behind his rules that aren't implemented all too well.
And AustonT, you'd like to see Thunderhorse Cavalry?
The YouTube link has the big failed symbol on it.
No, I don't actually think a jousting knight IC should be in 40k, I would just love to see BT get one so my mockery would never cease. Like having a space puppie ride a giant squirrel. It's justice in it's purest form.
The grim model is pretty wicked. I just don't like his fluff, some ten year old tried to tell me Mephistion was a knock off of Grim, followed by look at his fluff. Lucky this was the Internet, violence may have ensued otherwise.

Just because this person was very poorly informed doesn't mean he isn't a boss. I personally love the fluff of Grimaldus, especially concerning the book "Helsreach" which really just brings the character to life for me.
On another note, and this could just be my long break from 40K and lack of sleep talking, but when it comes to an ECSC, wouldn't it be reasonable to have one? I seem to recall somewhere that the main crusade fleets do have an actual appointed EC (Such as the one that accompanied Grimaldus to the surface of Armageddon).
In fact, I just looked in the codex and I think I may have figured out where I got that impression. Under the Emperor's Champion (pg15) it states
Each Crusade nominally has an Emperor's Champion, but in practice there is actually one for every Fighting Company.
Take that as you will I suppose. I'll go searching to see if I can find anything else to confirm my thoughts, or to prove they are just sleep deprived delirium.
New/Created Stats for the following. I've included my guesses:
High Marshal Helbrecht: Eternal Warrior, Bionics, Ld10 army wide, Orbital Bombardment, Adds 1 to reserve rolls (he is the Chapter Master of a freaking fleet-based chapter...)
Chaplain Grimaldus: Chaplain stuff, T5 and 2+/3++ to reflect how hard he is to kill.
Castellan Draco: Inquisitor Vinculus' Sword, Articifer Armor, Bionics, takes a unit of Sword Brethren as a troop choice.
Named Dreadnought (Either Chaplain or Venerable): Furious Charge, Assault Cannon, DCCW with Heavy Flamer, some other rule.
Named Terminator Marshal/Castellan: Iron Halo, Pair of Lightning Claws, take assault terminators as a troop choice.
There's 5 right there, which is probably plenty of special characters. I'm probably way off on the stats.
Helbrecht : eternal warrior, more than 3 attacks ( atleast make it D6) and maby 3 or 4 wounds.
Gramaldus: GIVE HIM MORE WOUNDS! He was such a bad ass in helsreach and in the codex hes "wow why would i run this?"
also because the templars cant have physic powers can we have something to counter them pretty easy? i dont even care if its a special character, just throw me a bone/
The Emperor extends His will to us when we destroy the wicked and impure to reconquer the galaxy in His name. The Emperor leads the galaxy to righteousness, and thus we must petition for His judgement on the wicked... for it is judgement without mercy..
Yes, i know the emperors champion is already special, but maybe one that was particularly famous and had been killed maybe. Just throwing something out there.

He's got 4. He can get up to 11 attacks (!) when someone else charges him:
4 base, 3 extra for SotHM, Counter-Attack and additional extra attack from poorly worded Chapter Banner, 2x Holy Relic. Hell hath no fury like a pissed off High Marshal.
