Hey there, I'm new to 40K and have just started an IG army. I have created my own army, The 1st Spartan Battalion, Im currently deep into an ongoing backstory for them if anyone is interested in some 'slightly more than light' reading look here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/392566.page.

Due to living in Australia raising an army costs a bucketload of cash so i have been lurking Ebay pretty much nonstop for a week or so to try and pick myself up some great deals which i have been very successful in doing.Not all my units are bought new unassembled and unpainted,some are used and in different types of conditions.I will post my new purchases and creations here along with their price and the GW comparison price just for kicks N gigs (all prices AUD)

Time to start bolstering the forces of my Battalion...These are my first ever models and i appreciate C&C so don't be shy.Will post pics as i finish my units i hope you enjoy seeing my army grow and hopefully seeing my painting improving steadily.

The blue is nice, but I think that you should add an edge highlight to the armour. Nothing too bright, but something that'll help the armour stand out a bit. Something like 3:1 Codex Grey: Chaos Black??

Thanks guys, i'm aiming for a gritty urban wasteland sort of theme for with my army.The planet they are from is covered with destroyed cities and doesn't receive much natural light so its fairly dark and dirty, i'm aiming for my men to look like they have really been put through the wringer over the years.Anyone have any tips on how to do cheap and simple gravel/rubble style basing?

I have the same theme for my Vostroyans. What I do is cut up bits of sprue to look like bricks, scatter a two or three around the base (you can also make them look like they are half buried or broken up) and then add a few miscellaneous techy bits (usually things that I've cut apart for conversions). A few random pieces of bent up wire (like from a paperclip) helps too. Then your generic well graded sand and "Voila!" Requires no scuplting or even purchasing anything (if you can find some sand). The bigger bases (like sentinels or HWT) get really fun. You can build brick walls or have piles of rubble, make a broken down machine of unknown function out of random bits. Good times!

Not that you have to use GW supplies, but GW packages slate basing materials in several sizes. If you use some urban rubble (cut up Imperial Buildings and/or bits you have left over) and surround those with the slate (using mostly the smallest shards of slate), it looks pretty good. The few models I did that way looked much like they were in the wreckage of a building. Also, the slate adds a nice weight to the model's base.

Weathering Powders can also help. These will give the legs and feet of your models a dusty look which helps both with realism, and with tying the model to the base.

A few new recruits arrived today, a leman russ and another 10x Troops.Already finishing up the Russ, will post pictures when complete,which hopefully should only be a few painstakingly tedious hours from now.

Before i get too far ahead of myself here is the first mini i have based, after about 50 attempts at a photo that showed any detail i gave up and this is the best one i got.Not very flattering.Its supposed to resemble gravel/rocky sort of terrain.Wish i had a better photo.

Now..The Russ....That old Chestnut. I received the Russ assembled and painted this morning, i aimed to get all my items new but couldn't look past the $14 Price Tag.
The old girl was painted to an O.K standard in a bright ultramarine-like blue,which in all my excitement i forgot to get a photo of.I tried to strip it back without luck due to it being sprayed heavily with acrylic spray paint.I Did my best and give it a hit of undercoat and got stuck into redressing it to fit my scheme.

Heres the finished Product.I was going for the same dirty look as my soldiers.Keeping in mind the dusty, windy and sometimes wet conditions on the planet i tried to achieve a realistic weathering/watermark effect, like its been out in the weather for quite some time.Hope you like it.Dont forget C&C is much appreciated.

Great start to the project mate, sucks when spill paint, especially at the price those pesky little tubs go for.

What sort of paint job are you going for on the tank, personally I like the look of dazzle camo for urban schemes, blues, greys and black.

With regards to the basing of the models, you should think of going for a lighter tone to contrast against the dark colours of the model. Light greys or even earthy browns and reds would be good choices.

Thanks mate.Yeah i agree i think a bit lighter tone for the base would be better,probably a darker grey.Not really attempting a camo scheme (YET!) as it doesnt fit in with my fluff.I have a sneaking suspicion however...that when some elite forces arrive to reinforce my beleaguered Battalion they will be much more Flashy and Fresh.Not so ragged and run down as my regulars.Keep an eye out for that in the future.

Alright! Sentinel Kit arrived this morning along with a ticket to pick up a mystery package at the post office at 5.Most likely my command squad or another sentinel kit.Decided with sentinel number 1 to just go scout with multilaser (for now,can always be upgraded/re-armed later) Just finished assembling him ready for undercoat and hopefully have photos of the finished product up later tonight.

So today was a busy day, only managed to finish one of the Sentinels.My Command Squad arrived and my Cadian Squad still hasn't been touched for a week. Hopefully I will finish painting the 2nd Sentinel tomorrow (unless i get too much negative feedback on this ones paintjob haha) Want to start my Squad tomorrow aswell.Now some photos....

Ok, 2nd sentinel is underway and I'm determined to at least START my 2nd squad today.Gonna be a busy one.Need to get more primer and a new brush before hitting my squad with a coat of paint too.Hopefully have some new photos to share in the coming hours.

Cheers mate,Theres a tonne of budget new and used 40k kit on EBay so why not.One of my sentinels was the old kit but there really isn't a difference between the two in their current configuration?just the pilot.The big difference is the closed top and the metal parts.

FINALLY a new update. I have put the Camouflage paint job from the Sentinel onto the Exterminator because it looked a little flat and out of place.Pics incoming in the next few minutes.

Good choice regarding colours. The big thing that strikes me is that there doesn't seem to be any highlights or washes. That, and a bit on the smaller details and it will look good!

And a second thing that strikes me... All that metal. It's very shiny and, well, if you like shiny stick to it, but if you want to ease down all that metal you can use badab black.

On the plus side, really like the camo! It feels very unique! In a good way that is
