Subject: Rawson's Reboot: 40k Beastmen. CC needed!
It's been a long time! I've turned from my lurking ways and am back on track to being an active Dakkanaught A few international moves, getting a second kid, etc had temporarily distracted me (though I still managed a WHFB side project during the last year or so that I was radio silent).
Rather than resurrect my old threads, I thought I would just start with a clean slate. I've packed away my dwarf army, and my hobby space is once again covered in 40k paraphernalia. I picked up a Deathstorm box, so there are a few Nid's creeping about (pics later), but mostly I haven't been able to stay away from my IG and old =][=munda projects. So without further adieu, here is what I'm working on:
=][=munda!!! After having suffered through hordes of rank and file troops for WHFB, it is high time for some character. As you can see, everything is very much in progress, and I would love input and ideas!
(Names subject to change)
The Ecclesiarch
I felt that a hand flamer was a bit cliche, so I went for the hand melta instead. Surprisingly simple head swap, and we've got something totally different.
The Savant
The Mutie
Lots of work left for his right hand. I'm leaning towards the torch or some other non-weapon option.
The Astropath
This guy started out as an astropath for my IG army, but has been recruited by the Inquisitor.
The Bruiser
I've had fun scouting out all the bits to put this guy together, I hope it works out as they all go on!
The Mandatory Bolter Henchman
This is the guy that needs the most work, but you see where it's going...
The Returning Veteran
The heavy from the first incarnation of my =][=munda project returns, and is slated for a full bionic left arm and retooled stubber handle.
There are a few more things in the queue, some needing further thought and some needing bits from the new Skitarii kit
Thanks for looking!
Cheers,
Rawson

The 104th Vostroyan Mechanized Rawson's Reboot Viktor von Domm: nope... can´t do that for the sake of all lving creatures that dwell on earth....
dsteingass: That's like saying "I forgot to tell you who your real father is"

Here's some of the evolved figures, including a new face, the marksman:
The Marksman
I love the base model of this guy (Imperial Missionary something or rather). The scarf and goggles have so much character! I removed the book/pole thing from the original (soon to be seen as part of the Savant character) to allow more focus on these other, fantastic parts.
The Bruiser
This guy was just a pile of bits last time; I hope you all can get a better idea of where we're going with him now
I would love some input on these guys, if there is any out there to be had. Speaking of input, I wanted to see what the community at large thought the most fitting head was for a new member of the retinue: The Halfling.
This was the head and body that spawned the idea for the halfling character. Actually it was just the head that started the ball rolling. He just looks short to me I guess. Both arms with be redone or completely removed (we'll have to see). On the other hand, there is part of me that very much likes this version:
Something about the bare chest and fully enclosed helmeted head is very grimdark to me. =][=munda especially has a "strange juxtaposition" thing going on (eg high tech/low tech).
Thanks for looking!
Cheers
Rawson

oh.... welcome back ... and then in full swing even..congratz!
the playing around with bits is my favorite moment of creativity... so many options, and all interchangeable still...
so far, quite a promising start...
my only current additon would be concerning the mutie... i think a non combat arm from a dwarf would be a nice idea here...which one...hmmm...still puzzled^^
looking forwaard to see more...cheers, vik
(oh...and she must be able to walk, am i right? your lil missus i mean...)
Automatically Appended Next Post: as for the halfling... either the helmeted one, or a more bearded and hairy one...? mebbe a space wolves head?

A dwarf arm on the mutie would be tough scale wise. The original model is Skaven, and you can see on the bruiser just how ape-ish the dwarf arms really are: they look big on a human sized model! I am also leaning towards the helmeted head, but I'll take a look at the spacewolf heads. Halflings have a tradition of nice sideburns, IIRC, if not snarling visages...
As for the kids: the oldest turns three this month and the youngest is 4.5 months. The oldest one did seem to take an interest in warhammer this evening. She was very concerned that my heavy stubber guy was missing an arm

Not sure why you haven't had more comments, there is some great stuff here! Looking forward to seeing some paint on these guys!
As for the heads, I like the first one. I'd lose the arms for something else (those two revolvers are begging for a gunslinger model!) But the head fits nicely!
=][=Munda, my new favouritist thing ever. I like the first head for the halfling personally. The bruiser is nice, could do with a sidearm weapon? What body is that you have used for the mutie? I have seen it used before and I have a few ideas for it. The astropath is cool, I'm not sure the chainsword is fitting for it though, maybe a staff with an eye on top? Anyway all that aside it's all looking great, can't wait to see what else you come up with
The Mutie body looks to be the one from the WFB Island of Blood Skaven engineer. It's a starter set mini, so should be pretty cheap on EBay if you want one

Thanks for coming by Paradigm has it right about the Skaven engineer. It's a fun model I've got my eye on a backpack with an autogun for the Bruiser, if you can count an autogun as a sidearm The astropath isn't really an astropath. That's what the conversion started out as, hence the name, but fluffwise will end up as something more fitting of a chainsword on a pole.
CaptainStabby wrote:The halfling with the Scion helmet totally looks like a midget psycho from Borderlands. I approve mightily!!
Never played, but I'm glad you approve Looks like we're getting a hung jury on the halfling head...

The guns are unfortunately comically oversized, otherwise I'd love to use them! Maybe if I do a huge mutie, I'll make him a gunslinger...
Thanks, everyone!

Great to see some old folks coming back The midgets look fun and mentioned Borderlands is a really good source of inspiration if you'll ever need one. I'll link the intro movie here for it's just soo awesome

I didn't like where the bolter henchman was going, so we changed gears on that one. He got promoted to Crusader
Please excuse the extra half of an arm; I wanted to make sure the concept worked before cutting into my precious AdMech bits
Here is the bruiser with some extra armor and the proposed backpack.
The Psycho Midget (I'm actually a bit afraid that name will stick!)
Shotgun over the shoulder, dragging a bag of loot.
Then I thought bag over the shoulder, dragging his shotgun (with scratch marks on the ground trailing behind) would be funnier
Love any input you guys have!
Cheers

The crusader looks good, I picked up some ad mech today, soooo many good bits on the sprues! I think I prefer the psycho midget with the shotgun over shoulder and dragging the swag, I like the scion head on him too.
I really like your marksman ^^ the gun is from the new admech kit aswell I suppose?
How are you with greenstuff? Either the shotgun/bag of loot over the shoulder will need some hands sculpted hehe ^^

Thanks, Calibanite Lion! Indeed, the AdMech boxes have many, many goodies on them The shotgun over the shoulder will be the harder of the two poses: it will be difficult to get the elbow/wrist/hand angles correct and still fit that giant gun in

Thanks, Soulcow! Indeed, the marksman bears one of the Skitarii Rangers' rifles. Regarding the halfling, I was thinking about going with the bold choice of no hands I'm decent at GS, but have sourced some sufficiently small hands to use on him.
Thanks for looking!

will be quite a challenge to sculpt the latter option of the psycho midget...but in terms of coolness that would be my favourite choice...i love characterful and story telling minis...
I love the mix of old and new models you've got going on here.
The Psycho Midget was cool with the two guns: the new version is even better. I prefer the shotgun over the shoulder personally. If it's difficult to get the hand position right he doesn't necessarily have to be holding it by the handle...
I also love the astropath. I'm not too shocked to see an astropath with a chainsword, after all like you said it's that kind of juxtaposition that makes 40k so grimdark.
I've already done an Eldar version using the same base model, but I like the extreme angle you've given yours to make it look really old and hunched over. Looks like two more conversions I may have to copy some time down the road!
Welcome back mate I have seen you replying around here again and checked out your Vostroyan thread, yet I find no update so assumed you were just dropping in but now I find you have staggered in to the depths of inquisitor
Great stuff though and some creative conversions looking forward to the completed unit, I do have a sweet spot for the halfling and it has helped with a current predicament I have.
Slow going last night with the crusader, so no update pics today

Well, you know what they say: "The challenge of sculpting a psycho midget is worth the effort." People say that, right?
moonpie wrote:Initially, I liked the bare face head for "Morality Impaired Little Person" but the more you show it, the more the scion head just works.
I am totally into your starting thought process here. Very clever. I'll be watching this one.
Thanks for stopping by, moonpie! I hope to keep some great updates coming

Master of Asgard, thanks for the idea! I hadn't thought of having the midget hold the shotgun by something other than the handle! That might be a lifesaver

Inquisimunda stuff is always the most inspiring stuff in the whole 40k universe, and your stuff is lovely! Me and a friend have been HEAVILY considering converting up some inquisitorial warbands ourselves.

Go for it! It's a blast I grew up on DnD and other traditional RPGs, so I love any change to add character to the, well, characters

Head is on the Ecclesiarch, neck and amulet GS work done. I've thought of a new right hand option that I quite like, but wanted to run by you guys first. What do y'all think of the dagger option?
The Crusader is almost done I'm quite happy with how the shield and power mace turned out, even though it was a bit of a pain to get eveything to work with the Bret body.
As you can see, he still needs gribbly bits back here!
Quotes, quips, quibbles?

Don't know how doable it is, but I'd possibly lower the arm on the Crusader, as if the mace were being held ready to swing rather than what at the moment looks like he's poking it forward. It's still good as is, but I think a lowered mace wold look more aggressive/imposing.
That Priest really reminds me of those old house of horror movies, you know the priest trying to take down the Vampire lord EPIC !!!! and I love that dagger it is not something you normally see but fits perfectly
The Crusader is coming together nicely and I like the batton but I do see what Paradigm means about the pose, however I really can't see how you can alter the pose due to the posing of the actual model.
