Subject: Bad time to start a Necron army?
|
 |
On a Canoptek Spyder's Waiting List

So I've just gotten back into 40K having packed it in shortly after the current edition of Necrons came out. I went and got me a box of warriors (+ scarabs) and now I find out that Necrons are about to be updated...
I chose Necrons partly because;
a) They have high points costs and I didn't want to have too many models.
b) I wanted a nice high stat line on my basic troops.
& c) I think they look awesome!
Having read some of the rumours I'm worried that there is a strong chance that points cost will be dropped and their stats reduced . I'd also be gutted if the appearance of the warrior and scarab models is changed because my models will look dated before they've gotten any real table time.
Epic fail? Thoughts?
P.S. Sorry if any of this has been covered here or elsewhere but I am not reading 73 pages!

The warrior and scarab models probably won't be changed. It's safe to bet that any plastics won't change at all. The core ideas of the army - tough troops, robot skeletons, and a higher points per model - probably won't change. I would say this isn't a great time to start a Necron army because their current codex isn't so great, but it's good to pick up stuff like Warriors and Monoliths while they're cheap before the new codex comes out and people start buying up the army again.

That's good to hear, thanks but what's wrong with the codex? I didn't realise GW would jack the prices up when the new codex comes out. So i can buy now and risk having outdated models or wait and pay through the nose...

Necrons are widely considered the least competitive army out there. The new update should change that (fingers crossed ) but it may not be a great time to buy the stuff that's good right now before they release new units that will probably overshadow the old ones.

I'll probably hold out until I've finished the models I already have. Its a safe best the warriors aren't going anywhere. they can't go from the army's only troop choice into non existence . I just hope this update brings some cool new units and makes the army fun to play. If not I'll try something else. Is there anything that meets the above criteria that isn't Space Marines? My main concern is that I don't want to buy, build and paint a huge amount of models.

Now's especially a bad time to start them for, as far as I know, it is currently impossible to get ahold of any models from a store. I know the stores around here all cannot order any in and I've already bought all of the stuff they had on the shelves leaving nothing for anyone at the moment

Getting them isn't a problem for me. I've gotten everything off ebay so far anyway because you can get brand new boxed stuff sometimes a lot cheaper. I got my Warriors almost half price.

I think you're fine picking up Warriors since they're already very good models, and probably Destroyers as well, but I definitely would not buy: Nightbringer, Flayed Ones, Immortals, Pariahs, or Tomb Spyders since these are all strong contenders for revamps.
Since you're just starting out, get some warriors, some scarabs, maybe a Lord with a Res Orb and maybe a Monolith, and that should keep you busy enough the next 2 months anyway, no?

Two months? Is that when the new codex comes out? To be honest just this box of warriors might take me that long. I'll be quite busy the next few weeks and I really want to take my time and get them looking great. The Eldar I painted when i was younger were... not great.

Yeah although i already have a rough idea of what I'm going for. I like the look of the ceramic white/storm trooper style necrons. With the colours I've got I'm hoping they'll turn out something like this:
 .
But with metallics instead of grey for the robo-gubbins.
I also think these Necrons are some of the best I've ever seen:
I'd like to incorporate the dark, green edged armor plates somehow. Perhaps on the warriors' shoulder pads? Any thoughts? And does anyone know how to get that kind of effect? Looks to me like black maybe with a bit of DA green and then the edges highlighted with like a snot or scorpy green?
Maybe this belongs in a different thread...

Two months is what the rumour buzz is right now, after the weird and seemingly incongruous new fantasy naval game that was teased in last month's WD.

Make that three Monoliths...
It's a safe bet in 2 months they'll be $75, so that's probably a good idea too.

Yes, chances are good for Necrons in November with a confirmation end of this month. And Warriors are a good bet to stay the same. And they look good.
BTW there are several cheap resin bases for necrons, e.g. by Evil Mushroom.
And these are my favorite necron armies:

I would only get warriors and monoliths, and possibly a lord. You don't want to be"that guy" that spends just a bit too much money on units that might not be in the new codex.

It never really bothered me about there not being many options. Since I'm just getting back into the hobby, I kinda liked the fact that there weren't an overwhelming number of different units to read up on and choose between/blow all my money on. As for it being 2 editions old, i stopped playing just after the 3rd ed Necron codex came out so i'm 2 editions behind the times myself And WOW those Necrons look amazing! . I especially like the Necr-Orks. I always thought it would be cool to convert Necrons to make them look really steam punk but sadly I lack the skill and resources. Never seen those pics before though, they look awesome. Also, Orks are cool as bombboy1252 wrote:I would only get warriors and monoliths, and possibly a lord. There's little chance what units are currently in the book WON'T be in the next book. Unit costs have to come down, there's just too large a point per model difference betwixt 3E and 5E.
Even if a book wasnt due to come out, Crons are a solid army. Dont listen to the haters. there is a TON of potential in a Cron army to run amok on average players, and just as much potential to get WTFPWND...but really thats every army. Except SW...feth SW.

Yeah, depending on what kind of hobbyist you are, this could be the best possible time to start Necrons. I would say your best bet is to focus on the meat of the army, especially since you say you have other stuff to do and will be going slow. Get a bunch of warriors, as previously stated the current models are wonderful and shouldn't look dated compared to whatever else they release.
By the time you finish them all up, the new book should be out or coming out very shortly with leaked info on what will be in it (provided GW's new security strategy doesn't work flawlessly.) That way you can have the core of your army done, the boring parts out of the way, and focus on all the cool new stuff that is released, without wasting any money.
I'd say don't grab a monolith just yet as well. Most likely they will still be a great choice, but you never know, and wouldn't want to be stuck with one or more 60 dollar kits that you don't want to use.

Thanks for all your input everyone. I think I'll probably just get my warriors and scarabs done and then wait for the new codex. According to some of the rumours I've read, there's a chance that immortals will become troops and have a new plastic box set so I don't want to go getting more warriors. I wanted a destroyer lord but if they become jump infantry the flying beetle bodies might be gone and there may be new characters coming out anyhow. Pretty much just gonna see what I like the look of unless there is a chance to make a profit from the inevitable price hike? Buy up Necrons now, sell cheaper than GW when prices go up for small profit? I could always keep the ones I still want and sell the rest to cover the cost... (this is the mind of a broke student at work)
