so I've heard (and noticed) that folks who play certain factions act or are a certain way. Anyone else notice this?
so far I've seen the loud ork player, a mischievous slightly sadistic DE player, and a wapanese anime loving tau guy. (the community up here isn't huge so the sampling size for the survey isn't very good). There will always be the WAAC folks who play the OP flavour of the month, but I'm looking more for personality wise.
oh and women love the tyranids.

I'm not sure, are you claiming a correlation between army choice and personality, or that each army caters to (and is strictly played by) a certain personality type?
Also, where do people who play multiple armies fall into your theory?
Either way, I don't agree with you.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable. |

I've never noticed any sort of connection between sadism and playing DE, although DE players are more like the people who smell like Patchouli and like Rocky Horror Picture Show. Maybe that's just me.
Then there's the stereotypes of Eldar players being dicks, SM players being stupid, Orks and Khorne players being loud and obnoxious, Nurgle players smelling odd, Slaanesh players being sex perverts, Tau players being wapanese and all that, and SW and BA players being WAAC dickheads. Most of which are completely true.

IMO, the Stereotypes seem to be more of the exception than the rule.
Some Eldar players can be dicks, but to be far that is because some players in general can be dicks
Some Tau players can be anime Freaks, but Anime is now a really big thing and alot of people like it.
Some Nurgle player reek up to high heaven, but so do most other players(the Unwashed Gaming Community) that do not ever plan on getting laid.
and so on and so forth.
Now some people prolly gravitated towards their army based on how they(the players and the army) act, but from what I have seen it's not as commonplace as people make it seem.

I see a lot of opposite attraction, actually.
The small, shrimpy 80 lb guy playing ogre kingdoms, or the guy covered in peace symbols (including one cut into his hair) running Khorne Daemons.
Sometimes we like our escapism to be something we're not

On the serious note, I haven't particularly noticed and major sterio types for any particular army. But thinking about it logically and there should be slight similarities between each armies player base, if for no other reason then like minded people will have similar tastes. Where I play doesn't form anything like that, though that may have alot more to do with people going "Well I like army A and army B. But Bob over there already collects A, so I'll choose B".

I hate when people associate tau with anime lovers. Mostly because I am asian and play tau so I feel like people would judge me like that but I thoroughly dislike anime except for a few.
No idea about this correlation between players and armies though. It'd be fun to make up a few though. Like space wolf players being burly men who just like to beat people's face in with their armies (figuratively speaking)

Generally it seems newer players use Space Marines/Orks. The Assault on Black Reach box set having so many starting goodies may be partially the explanation.
Note this means "generally, newer players use Space Marines/Orks". Not "Generally, Space Marine/Ork players are newer players".

hm, I like the drawing style of Animé, but that is wherer my stereotype ends.
I actually am the everlasting paladin goody goody person, who now is doubting why I play the MOST Grimdark setting ever, how naive. (we have a match!)
I also think it faikls that in the 41st millenium we still use melee, i mean WTF! ( and another match!)
Plus i think the Imperium are downright douchebags from time to time.
Yeah I match my faction just fine without any stereotyping neccecary.

My gaming group back in highschool had players who correlated with their armies very well - the wacky guy played Orks, the more malicious of us played Chaos, and the "straight man" as it were played Imperial Guard. Since highschool I haven't seen too much correlation between army and player though. I will say that since I cut my metal mane and shaved my beard I don't play Space Wolves much anymore though.

I don't necessarily think that people mold to the army that most represents them, but I do think certain attitudes tend to come packaged for free with certain Codices. Sisters players tend to be more stubborn than most, I find. Other than that, I have noticed a trend. While not all Tyranids and Dark Eldar players are cheaters, every cheater I know plays either Tyranids or Dark Eldar.

Odd that.
All the ones i've noticed to be cheating blatently are Marines players of one stripe or another (if you count CSM as marines also)
The AP 2 Heavy 8 Blast Thunderfire cannon was one of the more hilarious attempts
The sneaky cheaters are often DE or Nid, i'll agree, as it's easier to miss rules 'modifications' in a codex you aren't up against every game

Eldar-Most Eldar players are artsy freaks. They're obsessed with how well their army is painted and how well built their army list is. Tend to be egotistical.
Dark Eldar-Okay, emos and creeps. That's obvious.
Tyrands-These guys are generally fat and smelly, with cases of massive, unpainted identical miniatures.
Tau-Hyper 9 year olds who think they really understand the game, but they don't.
Space Marines-DURRR I'm generic! Space Marine players are the worst of the lot. They're mad extremists obsessed with their vision of 40k, where the Space Marines rule all.
Chaos Space Marines-These players are bitter at 5th and 4th edition for a poorly thought out, unbalanced Codex. They seek vengeance against GW, frequently organizing failed boycotts and long for the day when a new Codex is released..
Imperial Guard-Imperial Guard players are like really skinny Tyranid players whose us too much aftershave and are quiet and awkward. They tend to cry when they lose games.
Chaos Daemons-These guys are probably some of the craziest of all. Their miniatures were assembled wrong and just splashed with random colors, as if the player had no sense of reality. They tend to roll the wrong kinds of dice, randomly place their Daemons on certain parts of the board and making hissing noises when they lose. Don't play with these guys.
Sisters of Battle-Sisters of Battle players are rule/fluff Nazis, who are known to scream at and sometimes punch people whose visions of the guy contradict their own.
Grey Knights-Imagine a Sisters of Battle player whose gone off the deep end.

I have to say that as a newer player I've run into certain kinds of people who seem to fit their armies.
Some regular playing buddies:
A computer programmer for a large firm plays IG and has a very detailed paint scheme, neat and orderly deployment, and everything is in order both on and off the tabletop.
A chubby guy who doesn't strategize too much and is slightly immature but a nice guy loves his orks.
Art professor who is slightly agrressive at times (socially awkward) loves his Eldar.
Ex-Marine jock yet nice guy plays his Space Marines and rarely deviates from the same list every week. A young kid plays his same exact space marine list every time fits the bill as well.
Guy with lots of tatoos loves who loves his Dark Eldar.
Intelligent finance guy who goes to the gym a lot loves his shiny and pristine Grey Knights.
We don't really have "loud" guys or agressive guys, and I don't know about stereotypes of army generals, but I can certainly see how our local group of friends seem to mesh well with their army.

Hmmm...
The socially awkward guy programmer has a inferiority complex and perceives us as being out to get him plays Eldar/DE/Tau.
The loud, excitable, energetic guy who gets angry at the game plays Orks, CSM, and IG.
I'm the moody drunk, and I play IG, Tyranids, and GK predominantly.
Our 'outgoing' friend who just got deployed plays exclusively SM ("Blood Angels", now). Not sure how to describe him, other than by saying that he believes a slap on the ass is socially acceptable long as you say "good game" afterwards.
Other than that, I don't really know many of the other guys at the LGS. They mostly seem to fit in to the 'quiet socially awkward' stereotype, regardless of what they play.
