You ever had that experience where you bought a game, turned out below average or worse of what you were expecting; then a sequel comes and out and you tell yourself "Nah, probably just like the first one. I'll pass" but for some reason you eventually buy it only to later punch yourself in the face for being tricked again into a worthless experience?

Best example for me:

I bought the first Call of Duty Modern Warfare game and was treated to an ok campaign mode (then after playing Crysis that "ok" degraded to a "waste of time") and a horrendous multiplayer where you spawn on top of enemies and grenades rain down upon you endlessly, where your average life span is 2 seconds. I hated it... to say the least. THEN Modern Warfare 2 came out. I said "No, absolutely not!!" then after my friends coaxed me into playing it I got a strange feeling that it was somehow different... So I bought it on Steam... for $60... 1 month later it began collecting e-dust in my Steam library. Piece of gak. What was I thinking?

Maybe you hang out with immature women. Maybe you're attracted to immature women because you think they'll let you shpadoink them.

I pre-order games quite often because they look good (and because of pre-order bonuses), but they nearly always turn out to be meh or terrible. I don't know why. I think I've learnt my lesson now, though.

Yes, Fable.

Unfortunately got the second, will never waste my money on the third.

Can't say that it's ever happened to me. If a game sucks, I've no interest in trying a sequel.

+1 to Fable.

Doesn't help I ended up buying 2 due to friends telling me to co-op.

And then buying 3 for the same reason. I am such a fool.

Fable: Played the first, it was meh. Played the second, never beat it, bought the third because a friend wanted to play Coop.

Two Worlds 2: played 16 minutes of the first one, Bought the second one, traded it in within 5 days.

I also Preorder alot of games (yay almost limitless disposable income!) and generally end up dissapointed, or not interested enough for a second playthrough.

Starcraft.

Jokes aside...

Starcraft.

Also Battlefield and CoD, though curiously not MoH (whose latest game had an excellent, if unfortunately short, single player and enjoyable multiplayer).

Got coaxed into buying CoD Black Ops by some friends for $60.

Now it's collecting internet dust in my Steam library and I'm stuck wishing I had a box of terminators instead.

Sometimes the second one is better. For example, I really disliked Assassin's Creed. A friend pretty much made me play the second one and it turned out to be pretty damn good.

Now I am really pondering Final Fantasy XIII-2. I hated the first one, but the talk is that the second one is fixing the problems in the first one. There is a good chance I will get fooled twice on that one.

I can do better than this!

I bought Dragon Age Origins and absolutely hated it. I promptly traded it in and proceeded to talk gak about it on DakkaDakka. Fellow Dakkanauts convinced me that I was not giving the game a fair chance.

So I bought it again.

I also bought the DLC this time -- which did not work. I spent a week on the phone with EA, who basically did nothing. They gave me some "gift certificates" to their online store in small enough amounts that they would not cover any purchase (they were non-stackable) -- basically, an invitation to spend more money on EA products.

Also, I didn't like the game any better the second time. I gave this copy away.

Then Dragon Age II came out. Certainly, I would buy this newest piece of gak? Right? RIGHT???

Wrong, I bought it. And I wrote up a quick "it's meh-ish" review here on Dakka. Over time, I reflected on playing DA2 and decided it was even shittier than DA:O. Yes, the gameplay is sleeker but it's not even a RPG anymore. Just more Mass Effect garbage -- but with terribad graphics and a bland story with zero meaningful choices.

As an avid tabletop RPGer, I bought the Dragon Age RPG boxed set when it came out, too. What's that you say? Are you a moron, Manchu? Apparently, yes. But there is a happy ending -- I ended up really liking the boxed set. I liked it so much, in fact, that I went out and purchased the GotY ed. of DA:O and GUESS WHAT? I am actually having a really good time playing it.

The circle of life ...

Fable and Dragon Age top my lists. Fable 1 was great to me, 2 and 3 killed my interest. DA:O was average, DA2 has barely been out of its packaging.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I noticed that you post that you don't like starcraft a lot. Why, I think it's a pretty good game.

as to the OP, Call of Duty, both of them after MW1 and WaW, black ops sucked except zombies, MW2 was terrible, and MW3 will suck even more.

I don't actually hate starcraft, but it doesn't even BEGIN to live up to its hype.

It's just sort of average. An enjoyable campaign, mediocre multiplayer. So basically similar to Duke Nukem Forever, although DNF had far better gameplay mechanics than SC or SC2 does relative to the rest of their genres.

But it's not "OMG THE GARETSET TIHGN NI ETH WROLD!" like so many of its fanboys constantly scream (and scream, and scream, and scream) any time reviews for any other RTS or RTT game come up. Since the OP asked about games which live up to their hype-- SC didn't, and never has.

Call of Duty. I've bought all of them up to BLOPS but I have been disappointed with each successive game since World at War and have decided to quite the series.

3

World at War, MW2, and BLOPS

The series just isn't what it used to be. The peak of enjoyment (and quality imo) was at Call of Duty: United Offensive for me.

So, it peaked around the first expansion for the first game?

For me it did CoD2 was good, I think United Offensive is one of my favorite shooters. Top 3.

I remember when all non-scifi FPS games were about WWII...

I still remember Allied Assault for example... so fun.

I take back my earlier statement, I did get the screw over. The CoD series before MW1. I got sick of playing ww2 games. Every new war game coming out took place in the past and I hated it. Then MW1 came out. I play the CoD for the campaign, multiplayer is an afterthought. So yeah, the campaign blew me away. I was eagerly awaiting the next MW, then what do you know WaW is announced. "Heresy!" my mind screamed. "Traitors!" is what I wanted to say, but hey, MW1 was good, so maybe WaW will be ok.

In short, no, it wasn't. Since then I've completely stopped supporting any world war shooters. If it's not modern, I don't want to play it. Not just the CoD franchise, but medal of honor, battlefield, all of them that jump back into completely overdone territory are avoided completely.

All my hate for old war shooters, but I liked Blops. Go figure.

lol..

Funny, because all we're getting now is boring blandy mcsamegame modern shooters.

Where's the near-future games, with things like laser rifles and advanced drones? At least Homefront has the latter down...

Ahhh...okay, I just thought you hated them, I think their solid, not nearly up to hype, and the people that love it, well, they think it's the best thing sense sliced bread and rave about it,, and insult all other RTS games because "Their ripping off starcraft" I lol'd when people kept calling DoW a starcraft rip off....
