A while a back I made a thread concerning the massive out of remakes, sequels, and adaptations.

Let's see how its turned out.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/341139.page

Quoting my original post. Bold are my new comments.

It looks like 2011 is going to be an exceptionally poor year in film. This year is yet again heavy in comic book adaptations, reboots, sequels, and prequels.

Starting in the Spring we're going to be in for a downpour of terrible films.

April 15th: Scream 4. Has the 4th film in any series ever been good?

Mixed reviews, I guess it did okay.

May 6th: Thor. They didn't cast Clay Matthews as Thor so this will definetely be a bad film.
For the most part it received good reviews. I have yet to see it. My friends said it was boring.

May 20th: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. First one was funny, second one was okay, third one sucked. Does anyone actually think that the fourth Pirates film will be anything worthwhile? At least Depp is hilarious as Captain Jack.
Got slammed. Saw that one coming.

May 26th: The Hangover: Part 2. I guess the Hangover 2 was too simple. They really needed the colon.
First one was better.

May 27th: Kung Fu Panda 2. Jack Black continues to claw for relevancy.
At least Hollywood can make decent animated films still.

June 3rd: X-Men: Fist Class. Yay, more colons. Might actually be an interesting film though.
Best comic film of the year and best X-Men adaptation.

June 17th: The Green Lantern. Does anyone care about The Green Lantern?
SLAMMED. Even the hotness that is Ryan Reynolds couldn't save it. Then again, the only thing he has going for him are his looks.

July 1st: Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Michael Bay. Raping your childhood since 2007.
At least I can look back on Beast Wars with fond memories.

July 15th: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. At least it's not another Twilight film.
And finally the Harry Potter series comes to an end. I hope.

July 22nd: Captain America: The First Avenger. I think we might be overdoing it with the superhero films. Just a tad.
At least he's cooler than Green Lantern.

August 19th: Conan the Barbarian. I was excited until I saw the actor playing Conan. I now have confirmation that god does indeed hate me.
After watching Game of Thrones I came to appreciate Jason Momoa. He did a fine job as Conan, but I think the series would translate better as a mini series or full fledged TV series than as a feature film. This film was absolute gak.

August 19th: Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World 3D. Who gave this movie the green light?
What happened to the Robert Rodriguez that brought us Desperado? He fell of worse than M. Night.

August 26th: Final Destination 5.
Slammed by critics.

October 21st: Paranormal Activity 3. This will not end well.

November 4th: Puss in Boots. It's a Shrek spin-off, not a porno. Sorry to dissapoint.

November 18th: Happy Feet 2. Penquins are cute. Have to give 'em that much.

November 18th: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1. Two colons in one title. This will be epic.
I actually bothered to read the plot for the series. Apparently there are questionable sexual overtones, including pedophilia. Fun...
Why must she share my surname? WHY?

November 23rd: The Muppets. Oh well, I do like the Muppets. At least isn't another superhero movie.

November 23rd: Rise of the Apes. I wonder if Pierre would've believed that his excellent novel would be turned into one epic and 3007 crappy films?
Need to see this, very surprised that it got such good reception.

December 16th: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Real life chipmunks are cute. Squeaky cgi ones not so much.

December 16th: Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Who let Tom Cruise back into Hollywood?!

December 16th: Sherlock Holmes 2. I was pleasantly suprised by the first Sherlock Holmes film. Hopefully, RDJR can keep it up.

And much to everyone's dissapointment, but not surprise, Sucker Punch sucked. Oh well, we still have a few months to go. Maybe next year will be better.

I actually thought that was a horrible movie. Me and the other interns from where I worked over the summer went to see it and I felt like while cramming all those plot points into a film the makers of the film forgot to make it good. I liked all the Harry films until the last two, which were just... Bad.

Really? Last one I watched was Order of the Phoenix and it also happened to be the only one I didn't loathe. The books are just too long and in depth to make good films.

That's a really narrow list of movies.

There's a wide range of really fun, intelligent films out there. Fair enough that people don't go and see them if they want safer stuff full of expensive computer effects, but then why complain that all the movies coming out are bad?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

To date, Frazzled has been utterly unimpressed with 2011. Outside of Trollhunter, Battle for LA, and hopefully Bridesmaids, I have violently regretted going to just about any film this year.

That's because the discussion was originally of REBOOTS, COMIC BOOK ADAPTATIONS, and SEQUELS/PREQUELS. It would be cool if people actually read posts here instead of going on and on about how you everyone knows mainstream Hollywood is terrible.

@Frazzled, Trollhunter was good? The previews looked interesting.

Trollhunter was quite good. It was also slightly lighter than some other of the other first person movies, while still having some scary scenes. After all, its about... trolls.

But the title of this thread is "2011 in Film"

Show me where I went on and on about Hollywood films being terrible

Furthermore I was thinking Films in 2011 might actually broaden past the narrow sighted view that Hollywood is the only place where movies are made.

My apologies for misunderstanding

That's all explained in the books, actually: Muggle(non-magicals) are apparently a non-factor in the world of magic because magic>technology THE END.

Seriously, that's her canonical reasoning as to why for everything you just wrote.

Oh, they have guns? Shield spell.
Oh, someone saw a wizard being wizardly? Mind erasing spell.
Oh, someone's near where wizards hang out? No they're not, Muggle repelling spell.

They even go so far as to outright call modern medicine butchery as none of it apparently can contribute to their magic healing in any way what so ever because wizards are so great and awesome.

The only reason the British PM gets a wizard body guard? Death Eaters hunt humans for sport to cause chaos.

Even the "good" wizards tend to pity Muggles because they're not lucky enough to have magic and need to resort to technology to make do like some sort of lower life form. It's kind of sickening, really.

While I agree with you, the entire final battle is invisible to non-magical folk.

Seriously, Muggles are essentially vermin in the books.

There is no need to shout
and put up an accurate thread title that is indicative of what you are discussing

Irrespective of which, the point still stands

Quoting my original post. Bold are my new comments.

(my emphasis)
You have listed films exclusively from limited genres then claimed that it will be heavy in those films and that it is going to be a poor year on that basis
No amount of shouty will get around the fact that your selection is narrow and your argument circular.

Over the past year and a half or so I have just gone to movies hoping that it isn't a terrible movie. I seem to be suprised when I walk out of a movie thinking to myself, "well at least that movie wasn't an abomination." There have been some movies that weren't bad out there though, too bad I only went because my wife wanted to see them.

Harry Potter ended brilliantly for everyone.

Those of us who really enjoyed the world she created were treated to a beautiful, action packed grand finale.

Those of you who don't like it can stop ranting about Harry Potter and how much you detest it (more than likely without ever having seen or read one piece of it).

2011 in general was pretty poor for films, but there were some crackers out there.

When did I say I didn't like it? I'm ranting about that ONE aspect of how she often goes out of the way to make sure to point out how futile Muggle society is in comparison to thewizarding world. She almost takes it to the point where the only redeeming quality Muggles have is how they can breed with and spontaneously produce wizards. It's even stated that a wizard is odd and/or eccentric for thinking the Muggle world is interesting(Arthur Weasley) and earns naught but eye rolling for such a hobby.

For the record, I've not only read every HP book and seen every movie, I've done so multiple times, so I feel I can properly complain about it with the knowledge of what I'm complaining about.

Don't be silly Plat. Liking something while offering criticism of its failings? Why its so absurd that I tip my hat at it. Lets be realistic. If you like something you must find it absolutely flawless and beyond reproach

You actually liked Paul?!? Go cleanse your mind by watching Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was good as was The American. I've not seen anything else that was good this year.

It's not really a surprise to me that all the comic book films sucked.

You called the thread 2011 in Film. You then said you earlier made a thread about all the adaptations, remakes and blah de blah, before listing all those remakes and adaptations. The very straight forward, common sense reading of this is that you're looking just at that movies when you think of 2011 in film.

This is only made more clear by you participating in conversation on films that weren't part of your original list, which also aren't adaptations or remakes.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Not all of them sucked. Thor was alright, and X-Men: First Class was easily the best of the film series.

Honestly, while I'm fairly disappointed in 2011 for films, overall, I'm still looking forward to Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. I only hope that Robert Downey, Jr. can keep his portrayal of Holmes up to snuff through the sequel, and I'll be satisfied even if everything else about it sucks.

Although both were enjoyable, I thought Thor edged it over X-Men: First Class although this may be the Natalie Portman effect. Potter 8 was also good fun, but I'm glad it's over with now.

Anyway, I agree with the general view that 2011 has been a very poor year for great cinema. I really want to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in the hope of catching something that's genuinely classy (although this is also a remake).

EDIT - Super 8 was pretty good, but was such a homage to Spielberg, it felt like a remake. It was let down by the final 20 minutes as well.
