Subject: So What Do You Think Of Rage?

Infiltrating Hawwa'
Through the looking glass

I picked the game up this morning, and I've been at it for about...I'd say 2 hours. I'm to the point were you get your first car. So here's what I've come to so far.
Pros
- The game has style, and I like that. The weapons are def post apoc setting, the gangs have their little quirks about them, and everything just looks right.
- The vehicles aren't so bad at getting you around.
- Enemy death throes. Just because they fall doesn't mean their dead. Also, their movements are pretty fluid, pretty much as advertised.
- Looks like it has a neat little card game built into it. If it's half as fun as ff8's version I'll be thrilled.
Cons
- Can't pick up enemy weapons. As in if you only have a pistol, and you kill a guy with an AR, you'll still be using a pistol on the next guy.
- Someone throws a grenade at a wall, you can see an explosion from the other side
- Everything feels so static. If you see a bucket on the ground, rest assured it's made of adamantium and firms nailed to the ground.
- If you crouch around you sorta of sneak. But if you get behind someone and stand up but not move, they immediately know where you are.
- Headshots just do extra damage, not instant death. Same goes for shots to the heart. Both against opponents with no armor.
- I guess halo spoiled me, but I like to see my character get into a vehicle when I enter it, not just instantly appear.
First Impression
It's like borderlands (without the suck) meets bioshock. While some of the smaller issues keep it from being groundbreaking, it's still a solid shooter.

I like it. I said this in my previous post, but the graphics are stunning. (playing it on 360) I love how graphicly, there is very little repeat. Thinking of Fallout and how the buildings all look alike, rocks, etc.
I agree w/ your statement about fluid movement from the AI. Shoot them and they will stumble and fall and drag themselves up. Wound them enough they will drag themselves across the floor and prop themselves up in to a sitting position.
The whole "You need this, I need this. Go fetch! Good boy" thing will get very old. I get the whole scratch my back I'll scratch yours, but not so obvious. That's just me.
Currently getting ready to go into the Dead City. I do like it. Want to see just how "bad" the ending is. All reviews have said the ending is lacking compared to the rest of the game.

I was just playing it, and I cleared out the first sewer system. Later on, I get a quest on the billboard saying "You took all their stuff and scared them all away, and now they're back! Kill em all again!"
If combat wasn't so fun with those throwing glaives, I would have been pissed.

Is this game linear or are there multiple options on how to do missions/gangs to join like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Fallout 3 had, or is it an "on the rails" shooter like Doom 3?

I bought it via Steam and can't get it to run. My computer exceeds the system requirements, and I'm pretty good about keeping my system updated, my drivers are all up to date. Still, I get a nondescript windows error message every time I try to launch the game. I haven't heard back from tech support yet, so I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing, but I read that Steam will give refunds in certain cases and I've contacted them as well. If I can get it to run, and run well, I'll be happy, if not I'm going to go after that refund, buy Witcher 2 with the credit and, if Rage gets good enough reviews, might get it out of a used bin for Xbox 360 at some point down the road.

I grabbed it last night. Installed it and was welcomed to a completely grey, untextured game. After a while looking around and installing drivers, nothing fixed it.
Then, on a whim, I went and turned off AA. And was greeted with an awesomely good looking game. Simple solutions and all that.

Good luck with customer service. Have you tried google? Perhaps it's a somewhat common problem? It worked for me the second I installed it. Pop in texture is god awful though, but I just blame that on my system.

Don't, blame it on Carmack deciding to develop it for all systems simultaneously rather than his usual PC first method. Which he laments. Rage works fine on mchines even slightly near the system requirements, but all the switches and stuff need to be set manually.
As for texture pop in, try adding this to your launch commands in steam for the game. Worked for me.

I bought Rage in Steam last night and I still cannot believe the issues people are having with it.
I have a nearly four year old rig with a HD 4800 series GFX card and it ran perfectly first time, no issues whatsoever.
I still have no sound on the actual game though, to which the only fix (according to the Steam Forums) IS BUY A NEW SOUND CARD!!! LMAO!!!
Can't wait to play it tonight when I get in.

...wat? I've always cheapo sound cards, using one now, and I've never had to replace one. If it only does it while playing rage...yeah, I don't think the video card is the issue.
I'm running a nvidia 8800 gtx alpha dog edition btw, and it runs fine for me. Loading times are quick and everything looks right.

The ending is bad, its a big build up just for it to end that way. However, it does make room for a sequel. Personally not impressed with it, it looks pretty and all but I don't like fetch quests that make me run around in circles.

6 Hours in, must say the story is extremely weak. Ok, bandits are messing with things, help the people kill the bandits, eventually you fight more organized bandits, and so on and so forth. RAGE is not big on explaining origins.

I like the look of Rage. I'm willing to give it a shot. I've enjoyed most of the id games though I've never finished any (except maybe via cheat codes on a hacked copy of Doom). I don't know about the missions thing... its kind of why I stepped away from WoW and barely play Fallout 3.

The graphics are STUNNING, playing it on 360, so extra credit to the id guys for delivering with the console version (*cough* take note DICE *cough*. The loading times arent as long as some reviews claim btw (i dont have it installed). Little disapointed by the linearness and am still getting use to it.

I really hope the game answers a few questions before I finish it. Relying on books for things to make sense is a tad lame. Also collecting bird corpses and bricks (damn you condemned 2!)

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Just got it to run on my laptop, some lag issues with textures, but otherwise a near flawless effort by a machine that shouldn't be running Rage at near max GFX.
My verdict on the game itself???
It's ok. It is a lot like Borderlands, but it's missing the meaty action of games like Borderlands, Bulletstorm or Space Marine. Bulletstorm is still my favourite game of the year.
As I know the origin story behind Rage, I'm not that fussed about not seeing any explanation in game, but I can see how that can annoy other gamers.
Gameplay is very good, even though I want more action, the action is tense and fun. The enemy AI is awesome. Shoot a bandit in the leg and he will limp around.
I paid £30 for the game from Steam. I thought that was a fair price. Xbox and PS3 users, I would wait a while for it to drop in price.
It ain't game of the year, it's a damn fine game and certainly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

That it's being compared to Borderlands makes me want to play it even more.. I loved Borderlands personally, and I can't wait until the second installment of that game comes out.
I think Rage looks pretty decent, but I havn't played it yet, so I'll stay neutral... I think I'll buy it in a few months when the price has gone down. (I learned that from Portal 2.. bougght it pretty soon after it was released for a staggering 50 euros. Amazing game, but a little short for 50 euros. Recently the game was on sale for 15 euros so I feel a bit ripped off, but those are the ways of steam.. and thus I'll be more patient from now on)

The defib mechanic is ingenious, especially when you get 2. It reminds you to save and also gives you a break if you forget. I think it will probably be stolen, at least mechanic wise.
Being a console shooter veteran though means i always forget to save.
I also think they should add something like this to the hud:
DEFIB OFFLINE
Really starting to enjoy it, loved the 'Gearhead' missions, boy those guys are fun to fight. Chipping away their armour with the Authority/Fatboys/Shotty then WINGTICK TO THE FACE!

Lol I think prey went a little overboard. I mean, you simply can't die in that game. No matter what you do or don't do, you always come back.
