Hey all.

I play IG and I like them but am not a very skilled player. Eg have only played a handful of games ever and am still learning the rules.

Anyways I was watching this thing on www.miniwargaming.com and one of the guys said that the IG in not a tournament worth army. As in it can't compete in tournaments and win cuz they are weak and not very competative. Also I was just reading a battle report in white dwarf , isssue Nov 2010 - and its my army, Catachans vs DE and my IG get slaughtered :(

So I want to know what people have to say about this and thier opinions on the issue, and also WHY is it that the IG are a lesser army. Why would GW put out an army for people to spend thier money on that cant win? its not fair. I know there are exceptions but is this statement generally true? And why would he say about the IG?

Okay looking forward to your comments and to hopefully make me feel more confident about winning with my army. K thanks everyone

White Dwarf is a mainly an advertisement.

Translation: If IG was the newest army, DE would have lost.
Sad but true.

IG is one of the best armies out there, it can be tailored to your playing style, whether its small elite, large horde, tanks, fast, etc it plays how you want it to be.

now OLD IG codex was kinda.... well..meh, but this one is pretty good.

I've been playing IG for 10 years now and you can win with your army, but it takes time to learn your play style and then you tweak then you start winning.

The internet is wrong alot. Orks are terrible according to the webs despite being in the top 10 at most tournaments still.

Learn how to use speed bumps, bubble wrap, and tank shock and guard are unstoppable.

um, this could not be further from the truth, IG are the most stupidly overpowered army in 40k. The reason the IG got mauled in that battle report is because it was a terrible list and in WD the new army ALWAYS wins, no matter what. Im not sure what that guy on miniwargaming was smoking but it mustve been some strong stuff. Trust me, IG are very very good. As for GW doing bad things, They dont make bad armies (with the expection of nids and sisters), they make overpowered armies so that people will start to play them and spend money on their stuff. Codex creep is the result. But I could rant forever on GW bad behavior, so I'll just stop myself there.

I play against 2 IG players almost every week and let me tell you, the IG are nothing to scoff at. They are a very well rounded army. After you get the hang of playing with them, what unit combos, vehicles, etc., you will put up a helluva fight. Remember it's not all about winning but enjoying yourself while playing a game.

In the last team tournament at our local gaming store, a friend and I played IG and Orks.

Came in 5th out of 13 with two wins and a tie. The only people who beat us had at least one Grey Knight player on the team (take that as you will) and the points difference was small.

Yea I saw them say that as well. But I think it’s the same guy who stated bugs are very competitive. On top of that how often do you see a competitive list on WMG. They are there for the hobby not tournament play.

With that said, my main tournament lists are IG. Last weekend I took first place at a local tournament. 25 players and I was able to table or have my opponent concede every game. (I don’t like games where people concede but I can’t control the other side of the table)

IG is still very strong. a lot of people feel that there outdated because other codex have caught (BA,SW,DE,GK). An’t no one going to turn there nose up at IG. You may not be able to just steam roll everyone any more but there sill a top contender.

One of the mig things I run into when reading things online is that things never ever go away unless the original sight and all other sights repeting what that sight go down as well as all of the online archives for those sights. So I will be reading forum posts about topic X and be either like, this is totally opposite of what people have been saying or be talking about something that is not in the codex and will look and the most recent post is 2008.

IG is hardly a weak codex. It's one of the most potent ones out there. Its ability to flat-out spam units is unparalleled (Orks come in a close second, mainly because they do require pricey upgrades to be a bit more effective). I've written up several Imperial Guard lists for fun, and 9 times out of 10, I wind up with almost a full FOC at 2000-2500 points. My buddy (who was borrowing the army) once mentioned that a better player beat his Guard list - but it was an uphill struggle the whole way, with Guard peppering the enemy player with shots the entire game.

And I would like to say that while WD is an advertisement for the latest flavor of the month, wasn't it the Tyranids codex that actually lost its own battle report to advertise the new 'dex? (I don't actually bother reading WD, as I only play 40k and don't care much about WHFB or LotR)

IG actually kick tons of butt. The most fun thing to do with them though is field some of the more unorthodox units they have. They have a very wide variety and it's interesting sometimes to see the looks on people faces when you field something like rough riders (even better when that rough rider squad proceeds to slaughter their termies). From a tactical standpoint even those fun and generally not competitive lists can have some interesting wins because if they've never seen someone field a type of unit before, they might not know quite what to do about them. You'll get the hang of the army, it's just about finding that special mix that works for you. Have fun with it, and don't take gaming too seriously.

"I have seen war in all its forms. I have seen feral world savages braining each other with stones and I have monitored the death of a whole planet at the hands of a virus bomb. I have seen Space Marines drop to certain death and win. I have seen Titans crush whole platoons underfoot.

But there is no more stirring sight in war than the charge of massed cavalry."

The IG codex by itself is a rather badly written with quite a few borderline useless units. Fortunately nobody cares about them and takes the good choices ( Chimeras, Veterans, just to name the two "star" units ) instead.
So no, if you wan't to field a brick hard army then look no further, the IG will deliver.

Yea, dont take WD battle reports too seriously.
IG is great and has always been pretty solid ever since I started playing them in 4th.
The first time I ran guards in 5th, my opponent asked "I thought we are playing 1500 points?" I smiled and replied in positive. The look on his face was priceless.

Anyone who claims IG are weak have never come up against a decent imperial gunline played by someone who knows what they're doing.

A good gunline, especially when faced with a footslogging or otherwise slow-moving army, is terrifying.

Hey Thanks alot guys for boosting my spirits. LoL. Glad to know buddy didn't know what he was talking about on miniwargamer.com . And yes all they do is boast about tyranids and Space marine and thier equivalents. It gets quite annoying actually.

Also I will never taKE ANOTHER white dawrf battle report seriously. They are total junk after realizing whoever is on the cover is going to win. How can they claim any legitimacy to those report or to thier magazine then? Or to the army they are using. Such rubbish.

Also I went out yesterday and bought creed cuz of his 4 orders. I need to seriously rethink my army over starting from CCS down to regular infantry troop. Unfortunately I started collecting 10 years ago but didnt know how to play, so I just collected based of how cool they looked or whatever they had at the store. But now 10 yrs later I got back into the hobby and have learned the rules and now basically have tyo start from ground up with my army. Thats okay tho

Anyways everything you guys said was great. I also am gonna get some Roughriders soon, as my friends Termies are a major pain. lol.

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated and you definitely answered my question about the imperial guard being weak. HA SCOFF at that satement now !!!!!

Yeah, don't listen to the internet at all. Most people feel if you don't agree with them, you're wrong. People said Tomb Kings were a crappy fantasy army, and my friend and I had the army book broken within a day. People say daemons are weak, but I win with them consistantly. I've gotten to the point that I don't even listen to voices online, because they're so set in their ways. The internet gave everybody a voice, and people choose to use that voice to be morons. Tell that to Betty, my brand new Demolisher with lascannons and side multimelta spontoons (she can fire all of them while remaining stationary, i'd like to remind you).
The Imperial Guard offer a grotesque amount of firepower in a number of ways.
Most other races have a massive amount of firepower concentrated in ONE unit, so one ordanance can wipe them out in a turn. The Imperial Guard have firepower spread out across the line. Then enemy can unleash devestating firepower on you, crush you in close combat...and you can just turn around and smash them to kingdom come.

Just remember with the MWG guys as well that they make it very clear that what they say is personal opinion.

In a very recent vid, Matt said quite the opposite. He did say that if your prime interest was winning then probably don't go Guard, but also explained that Guard can work effectively and referred the guy who asked the question to look up tactics and battle reports if he wanted to go IG to get a good idea of how to use them effectively.

OP - you didn't take MGW out of context, did you?

I concur with many of the posters here. IG, if anything, is currently overpowered. They get more bang for their points than virtually anyone else, with units like Vendettas and Chimeras being stupidly undercosted. Thing is, you do need to own a large number of models to benefit from this undercosting. If you own too few models, you will end up over upgrading them and not benefiting from this codex's biggest advantages, low point cost for virtually everything. I definitely disagree with the comment Matt made. If your in this game to win, IG is THE army to play, provided you can buy enough models.

From what i've read/experienced... IG are probably the most versatile, most competitive army out there. I WAS going to make them my main army when I started... sorta kicking myself in the ass now since I went necrons... then tyranids... then grey knights lol. I think if i went guard, I would have went guard heavy and been able to build any type of army i wanted (tanks, horde, etc).
