During the years (when I didn't have enough room to paint and store models) I collected quite a number of SW. This is my army list:
Vehicles:
1 Predator
1 Razorback
1 Mkiii land raider
1 Whirlwind
1 Mkii land raider

Support:
1 Land speeder
1 Space wolves dread metal
1 Space marine dread plastic

Troops:
1 pack Grey hunters (10 units)
1 pack Blood claws (10 units)
1 pack Long fangs (5 units)
Terminators wolf guard (5 units)
Scout seargent

HQ:
Ragnar
Njal
Ulrik
Iron priest

My aim is to put all them together in a big diorama (probably a modular terrain) but now that I'm nearly ready to start I'm facing a question:
It is going to take me a lot of time to paint them all.. should they be fighting numerous enemies or a few large ones ?
I do not play the game, I'm just in for the modelling part so I'm not picky about the enemies.

Any hint ? Chaos ? Tyranids ?

Go for Khorne, I think it'd look epic (its all abut close combat!!) and i think there is something about sw and chaos fighting frequently i think....

I wouldnt use nids, as they are more of a plaque that must be removed but an epic arch-enemy

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)

Another vote for Khorn. space wolfs vs Berserkers. I would suggest tundra or snowy terrain.
I think it would look awesome, especially if you contrast the snow with a healthy does of spilled blood.

Good luck.

A well thought out closing remark.

you should face a GK army in an assault/defend game.

For the Emperor, our Primark, Death to the UnClean

Grey Knights, making armies run off the board since the new Codex

"Enemies of the Imperium, hear me. You have come here to die. The Immortal Emperor is with us and we are invincible. His soldiers will strike you down. His war machines will crush you under their treads. His mighty guns will bring the very sky crashing down upon you. You cannot win. The Emperor has given us his greatest weapon to wield. So make yourselves ready. We are the First Kronus Regiment, and today is our Victory Day."

This, it could be during the burning of Prospero or the siege of the Fang.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I agree on the Thousand Sons. That would be an impressive diorama.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

I was going to also post that, so I'll third it instead.

Either modern Space Wolves versus modern Thousand Sons, or even better:

The Burning of Propsero with Heresy-Era forces and colour schemes on both sides. A lot more modelling for this version, though...

Tyranids would be a good candidate. A Battleforce will get you 43 Nids and you can pick one up from ebay for a decent price.

Thanks for all your comments
As this is still in the "project" form, I have loads of possibilities (too many LOL)!
Up to know I'm positive about making a multilevel terrain. It will have to be composed by "mini" dioramas that can be put together as a whole, for storing reasons.
I will also try to make appropriate "dents" in the terrain so that the miniatures bases will blend in with the terrain.
My very first idea was to make (part of) a derelict city on one side and some low cliffs on the other, where the SW forces will be (at least the long range support).
The "enemy" would be defending its position in the burnt city.
But this is one idea.
If I go for Chaos as an opponent, what will be the main leader ? Looking for something big..

Chaos would be either a Daemon Prince or a Greater Daemon.

Just another thought (but I don't have any idea at all if this would be correct "fluffwise"):
Would (or could) a demon (be it a Daemon Prince or Greater demon) create a portal and let other foes come in to aid him ?
Could (would) he call for foes from other armies, like Nids, if he was capable of luring them into battle ?

Thanks for replys

..do I love works in progress!

Yes on portals, no on other armies.

So, to counterbalance the SW I have, what Chaos forces would I need ?
I'd prefer less models (but powerful and big) than many small ones... otherwise I'll be dead before I finish painting them all.. (having a toddler around the house does NOT increase your available hobby-time).

Could have a portal or two with a bunch of basic troops coming out, giving the illusion that there will be many more to the battle without actually having the models there. Sort of like having it set at the start of the battle rather than in the middle somewhere. Could have a sorcerer or two who has transformed some of the wolves into spawn, allowing you to have a bunch of big models, perhaps one as it is being transformed bursting out of its power armour which helps place the others there and allows some cool effects like lightning and OSL to come into play in more interesting ways.

I like that, less work to do
I'd like to put a Deamon Prince (mainly because I love the model) and another big demon (Bloodthirster?), some basic troops and the portal.
Could you advise on a specific modle for the sorcerer ?
And.. what chapter would it be ?

Probably Thousand Sons like I mentioned before, they have a nice colour scheme.
Would mean no Bloodthirster though as they are a Tzeentch legion. For the sorcerer's they pretty much come with one as each of their squads is led by one.

Sorcerers are also a HQ option for the CSM so there's a few models, though this one is probably one of the better ones.

The alternative is getting the terminator lord kit as it has a few options for one in there as well. You could add in Ahriman, but I'm not sure he'd just show up at any battle they have.

Some historical inspiration:

1. Space Wolves vs. Flesh Tearers at Honor's End

2. Space Wolves vs. Sisters of Battle after Space Wolves sprung an surpise attack on unarrmed Ecclesiarchy officials (SW-Dex p. 19)

3. Wet-fur Space Wolves underwater (scuba-Thunderwolves and all) peddling after Tau on Kvariam Alpha. (SW-Dex p. 20) (For the real modelling-challenge only)

4. Space Wolves vs. Space Wolves led by Huron Blackheart on the Wolf of Fenris (CSM-Dex p. 58) (probably the least model-intensive, as you can use your Space Wolf-minis for both sides )

Agreed, Ahriman wouldnt just show up to fight for fighting. Hes more about raiding libraries than getting into fisticuffs with Russ' boys. I think a sorcerer would be a good leader for it.

Alright, I'll can get the sorcerer to open the portal. Do I need a second sorcerer ? What model would be suitable for the Thousand Sons ?
I'd also like to place a Daemon Prince and a Chaos Daemon prince. Would that be ok fluffwise?

Ummm... Thousand sons? Millenia long hated enemies here?
Or maybe space wolves vs. Skylars wolves. Would be a fairly simple concept to convert half of your space wolves to chaos space wolves.

If you want another large miniature, then you could get a soul grinder defiler or a LOC.
You could try to make some odd effects like the grinder's vomit or some sort of cannon effects for the defiler.
Or you could have the LOC summoning up a portal or possessing a wolf and slaughtering his squad?

Thousand Sons have sooo many opportunities for OSL and lightning effects for psychic powers and psychic force fields. It just takes some imagination. Also if you don't want many miniatures to paint you could try doing some termies?

One thing that might make your life easier is if you painted the ground to look as if it has an odd coloured, probably purple, portal in it. And then you could have things marching out. Or you could just do the normal portal thing you were thinking of.

For the LOC, another idea is that you could paint the ground around his feet with purple lightning heading out from where he steps. Then you could do fainter ones further behind him to make it so he looks like he has stepped there a few seconds ago.

Although do read up on some fluff for Sons of course, I find them to be a creepy and generally cool warband. You know the whole ghostly suits of armour thing. I don't know if you are familiar with Lexicanum the website wiki.

As for painting, you could just put the Sons in transports, then you only need to paint the transports. and remember to screw up the ground where the vehicles have driven. You could do a blown up Rhino with Sons running out.

Also you could add a few of these beauties to your wolves.
