It was uh......OK. In every sense of the word, OK. I thought that Jason Mamoa(?) did a pretty decent job and all, but the movie itself was just kindda......middle of the road I guess. It wasnt terrible, but Im glad I didnt buy it thats for sure.
Anyone else?

I liked it personally. It was far closer to the comics from when I was a kid which I enjoyed. Not the greatest movie ever or anything but I thought it was solid and fun. The wife thought it was to gory and didn't enjoy it near as much.

It didn't have the flavor of Conan, it was just a run of the mill fantasy action film which managed to have Conan the Barbarian as its main character. Pretty bland, as a big Conan fan I was pretty disappointed.

...I have no idea how you could formulate this opinion, honestly. The Arnold films had Conan fall in love (nevermind that in the books Valeria was a pirate who he hooked up with, they were both strong-willed so they broke things off pretty quickly) and facing a Kull villain the director randomly ripped. I can't find the interview now, but apparently JM refused to do the movie unless it reflected the character and he had the right hair/eye color (again, unlike the other film). What aspects of it bothered you?
I loved it. It had the over-the-top brutality, hints of the racist/sexist overtones while redeeming them in a non-cheesy way, the whoredom, the right amount of fighting ability for the not-entirely-helpless woman, and the rogue/ranger-like qualities that really take Conan that extra bit further to make him special as a character. I just... it was nearly perfect IMO.

I haven't seen it yet - I might rent it or else wait for it to come on Sky but I wasn't excited by the announcement - when I saw the trailer I was like
Why can't they just remake bad films that had the potential to be good - like nearly all Paul W.S Anderson films? I admit I'm a little "m'eh" to the whole film industry at the moment - no new releases seem to grab me
Still I would like to see it - I'm not a hardcore Conan fan but love the first movie.

My thoughts exactly. I think people are just in love with the Arnold versions which are much more High Fantasy oriented than Conan oriented.

I didn't like it at all, Mamoa was bad in Game of thrones not so much in Conan.
At one point i thought they did a good job on Rose Mcgowan's makeup but later realized that it was a botched face lift.

I loved it. It was true to Howards vision of Conan. I love Arnie, but he... well they found the top body builder of the time who had something resembling (but barely) acting talent, and put him in 'cause Conan is buff right? big muscles is what we need!' Conan was faster than he was strong, and smarter than he was fast. And damn was he strong. This one had his smart assed nature, his rage, and finally his smarts.

How was he bad in Game of Thrones? What did you expect out of Drogo? With the exception of some of the directional shifts (which you can't blame him for) I thought he did a fine job there. Granted I prefer when he can talk like in Conan and Stargate:Atlantis.

Bad as in badass, after I reread my post I wondered if someone would think I meant bad as in not good. He was really good in GOT .

I thought it was okay. More Savage Sword of Conan (the comic) than REH original Conan. It's kind of cheesy, over the top in gore and boobage, and not particularly inspired in story.
I honestly thought Momoa was one of the better parts of it- he's the right physical type, he has some of the character's charisma and laconic sense of humor, and didn't come off like a moron the way Schwarzenegger often did. The script didn't do him a lot of favors.
The Schwarzenegger version is still a better film, due to a better story, much better supporting cast (Max von Sydow! James Earl Jones before he got old and started coasting!), great cinematography and one of the greatest film scores of all time.
Hopefully some day someone has the brains to actually make one or two of Howard's excellently-written stories into a movie. The original stories are short stories, which would convert MUCH better and more faithfully to movie form than any full-length novel can. They're also quite cinematic in tone and pacing.
It's saddening that no one's been able to do it right yet. Kind of understandable, though, for two reasons:
1) Schwarzenegger is an iconic movie star and his version of the character has been imprinted on the moviegoing public's minds for about three decades now.
2) Howard has only started to get any respect as a writer within the last 10-20 years, after many years of neglect and abuse, not least from some of his posthumous editors, who denigrated him as a writer and adulterated his material by re-writing his stuff and publishing inferior material of their own under his name.

While I agree mostly, I don't see how it could realistically have any mainstream appeal. As an example, watching Conan climb a cliff facing as a dragon snaps at him from below and he slowly drops poisonous plants in his mouth is just something I'd never think to see in a film Not to mention the racism and sexism. I just don't see it happening ever.

Plenty of Conan stories would be great for the screen with minimal alterations in terms of toning down/removing inappropriate racism and sexism.

Minimal alterations necessary.
