What I find amusing is that people use the Communist purges for political purposes (not that different from advertising) all the time. But the Holocaust? That's off limits.

One might wonder if there isn't a little bit of guilt over historical antisemitism.

Well in many areas the anitsemitism is not historical but a current event.

The same is true of anti-communism and anti-Russianism(?).

I assumed you were claiming that the Holocaust is off limits because lots of people still hate Jews. I was noting that there are also lots of people that hate the groups of people subjected to Stalin's purge.

I don't know enough about McCarthy to have a leg to stand on other than the Actor's Guild charges, and frankly I can't remember if that was in fact McArthy at all. So I'll add this:

This does sort of miss the point that the Holocaust was a result of anti-Semitism.

Stalin's purges weren't the result of anti-communism or anti-Russianism. Unless Stalin's actions were part of an elaborate Georgian revenge plot against Russia...

True enough, though Stalin's purges were absolutely the result of pro-Stalinism.

Still though, my argument is that its odd that we focus so much on the Holocaust as an untouchable tragedy (and, really, slavery as well) while using other tragedies as comedic or political fodder.

Maybe it's the silly Historian in me but I refuse to flinch from the Holocaust or Slavery and discuss it objectively...I also enjoy getting a rise out of students with less flexible outlooks.

My junior level core class was based around "Lies my Teacher Told Me"
A middle aged female in that class took GREAT offense to openly discussing Thomas Jefferson's freedom rhetoric and ownership of slaves. It was fething epic...and I couldn't even contribute much; which is a shame.

I agree. But I think that's more due to the fact that most other tragedies aren't as prevalently portrayed for whatever reason.
