Subject: What would the return of the 13th company mean to the Space Wolves?

The 13th Great Company of the Space Wolves, 'dissappered' just after the Horus Heresy ended.
But if they came back what would happen to the Space Wolves, would this also signal the return of Leman Russ
Fragments of records suggest that the disappearance of the 13th Company did not occur until after the Siege of the Emperor's Palace during the Battle of Terra, which saw the rebel Warmaster Horus finally defeated and the Traitor Legions of the Chaos Space Marines routed to the Eye of Terror.
In the wake of the galaxy-spanning civil war, which saw the Imperium brought to its knees by Horus's treachery. Some of the Loyalist legions sought to consolidate the forces of Mankind.
But Leman Russ, ever headstrong and proud, demanded that the Traitors not be allowed to establish a foothold within the Eye of Terror, and that the Imperium should strike immediately.
Though Primarchs Guilliman and Dorn overrode their erstwhile brother Primarch, it has been suggested that Russ may have dispatched the 13th Company with orders to hunt down Ezekyle Abaddon, the Warmaster's Lieutenant, and bring his head as a trophy to set before the Emperor.
Other, more dubious theories suggest that the Wulfen gave chase of their own accord, some even whispering that the 13th Company was tainted by Chaos all along, and were seeking to join the ranks of the Traitors.
This legend bears up well to the little evidence that exists to support it; the Wulfen did embark upon some form of pursuit, which has been given credence by the timing of their emergence from the Eye of Terror ten millennia later during the 13th Black Crusade. The similarity between this and other legends suggests that a kernel of truth lies at the heart of the matter, though the exact details will likely never be known.
Though the current strength of the 13th Great company is not know, it should be noted that the 13th Great Company was one of the Original Great companies of Leman Russ himself and went missing just after the Warmaster Horus was killed by the Emperor and before Gulliman compiled the Codex Astartes.
This would suggest that the 13th comany when it went missing, had tens of thousands of Space Marines.
If they returned what would this mean to the Space Wolves Chapter, as it would effectivly mean that they would become the Largest Chapter in the Imperium.
They would almost certainly be Questioned by the 'Drone, Eyes Roll Back' Inquisition as to why they haven't been to School in 10'000 years
and who ordered them to go. Also to find out if they are still 'Eyes Roll again' Loyal to the Imperium of Mankind.
Any thoughts?

Before anyone jumps on this I should further this part of my comment.
This means that when they went missing, the Space Wolves were still a Legion and had not yet been broken up as the Codex had not yet been compiled.

It would most likely mean the return of Leman Russ and the coming of the wolf time in my opinion. That is the reason why they will never return, because if they did it will mean the rest of the lost primarchs would have to appear and fight their final war with chaos, thus ending the conflict that more or less keeps 40k going. The 40k universe always stays static and tends to focus on the past rather than the present. But who knows maybe they have a radical change in writting staff or they just feel like a major change is on order and do something completely different?! However I highly doubt this.

IIRC they were sent into the Warp chasing the Thousand Sons on the orders of Leman Russ.
No one so far has the authority to contradict those orders and so they keep going, they have taken losses but not really as many as you would suggest.
They will return when Russ orders them too...

The Space Wolves will, lamentably, be forced to destroy them once they realize that the perilous powers of the warp has changed the 13th company into a pack of feral dancing gay clowns.

I agree that the return of the 13th Company into the fold would be a momentous event, probably involving the return of Russ himself.

As the OP mentioned the 13th company already returned during Abbaddon's 13th black crusade. There was an army list for them in the accompanying codex and everything. They haven't been mentioned much since then. Also I could be wrong, but I thought that when I read the Burning of Prospero it stated that Russ sent the 13th company after Magnus. I'll have to check when I get home. As to what will happen now that they are back, I would think they will continue to operate as a largely independent force, much like some of the chapters from the cursed founding. I doubt they could go back to Fenris and the Imperium wouldn't welcome them with open arms, so they will have to continue to follow Russ' orders and fight the forces of chaos on their own.

I imaged that the 13th company would operate more like the Legion of the Damned than they would as a consolidated fighting force.
And the largest legions of the time were the Word Bearers and (only by a slight margin) the Ultramarines. The Word Bearers had 100,000 Astartes according to The First Heretic. Seeing as how there were sometimes 20+ companies in a legion, I would say that the number of marines in the 13th company would have been closer to 3000-6000 marines at full strength. Anyway, it doesn't change much. More of just a matter of semantics.

The amount of companies in a legion were not universal, for instance the Death Guard had seven great companies, coincidentally Nurgles holy number

Of course they are not universal. But even if the 13th company was the last of the space wolves companies, then it still would have to be fewer than ten thousand.
Anyways, it doesn't really matter to the discussion at all. I'm just being picky.

The Inquisition would almost certainly demand the immediate surrender of the entire 13th Legion for destruction, due to the obvious nature of warp influence on them. They would also require the surrender of elements of the rest of the chapter, perhaps one in every ten or one in every twenty marines, for assessment, to decide if the nature of the warp influence was tied to their geneseed.
The SW would almost certainly refuse, causing a civil war.

Not reutrn return they didn't.
By return i presume the OP means fully regroup outside of the warp and travel to Fenris and rejoin the chapter.
The Inquisition may declare them traitors/heretics or theym may not.
The ~Sw's curse is probably known to the HLoT which means it is probably known to the Inq. which means they couldn't claim it is a warp curse...
Though a civil war between the IoM and a chapter as capable as the SW would leave entire systems devestated and the entire Imperium weakened and more importantly the Cadian gate weakened...

Tens of thousands of marines? I was under the impression that the original Space Wolves legion was small for a legion. Also they were not in the Istvaan IV massacre, so the source of their decline to around ~1000 marines today would be what exactly?

Actually no they were a realtively large legion. They had more than the Thousand Sons and 2x more than the Salamanders. They had alot. No numbers are given but it is expect that each great company had alot more than 1,000 marines.
And the chapter currently has 2,000 Wolves.

10,000 is about the strength of the entire legion.

Yeah I really don't understand the whole "you've touched the warp, you must be bad!" crap. How is the Imperium supposed to wage war and eventually defeat chaos if everyone has to worry about the Inquisition breathing down their neck? GAH I hate the inquisition. And I especially hated the ending of "Space Marine" the game. "I tattled he touched the warp! He's gotta be badddd nanananana!" Oh brother.

First I think I must clarify a few points, just to stop any confusion and will try and be more specific in future.
By 'Return' I do mean return to the Chapter or actually leave the Warp and EoT completly.
I'm not quite sure if I did exaggerate to be honest when I said ten of thousands.
If I did then I stand corrected, but if I may point out that Corax had a small Legion in the Raven Guard in comparison to the other legions, that is according to the Audiobook Ravens flight.
Again this could spiral out into a fluff argument, but you can only go off the last or latest piece(s) of information.
Any thoughts?

This tread is about the 13th Great Company, the 13th Great Company which went missing after the Climax of the Horus Heresy. Which ment that it was part of the Space Wolves LEGION, not CHAPTER. They went missing before the codex was written so were still at a reasonable strength for a LEGION Great company
Automatically Appended Next Post: Numerically tens of thousands was an exaggeration I suppose but its besides the point. They were still much larger than a present day 'Chapter' and would have still had thousands in their Great Companies.

The reports on legion size DO vary, but the most common, and most official number is 10,000 per, and has been (I am fairly sure) addressed in Q and A.

10,000 is about the strength of the entire legion.
And it would likely cause the SW to start preparing for the wolf time.

Actually no they were a realtively large legion. They had more than the Thousand Sons and 2x more than the Salamanders. They had alot. No numbers are given but it is expect that each great company had alot more than 1,000 marines.
And the chapter currently has 2,000 Wolves.
Chapter currently has ~3000
And it was one of, if not THE smallest legion.
Where the feth are you getting your numbers?
No the smallest legion was the Raven Guard, and the Salamanders.
Check your sources.
The space wolves per a great company have 100-200 wolves per company. It was stated in the codex 4th ed and 5th.
And please remember to use censorship this is a family forum.
Actually, in Battle for the fang, in the part where it followed Ironhelm attacking the decoy, his Company was stated as being well over 300
Hmmm. This was how long ago?

The chapter would actually be BIGGER now, having recovered from that. Your argument=moot.

Numerically tens of thousands was an exaggeration I suppose but its besides the point. They were still much larger than a present day 'Chapter' and would have still had thousands in their Great Companies.
Do we have any actual sources for the present canonical strength of a Heresy-era Space Wolves Company/Great Company/Chapter? Or indeed any Legion's Companies or Chapters? As I recall the novels have been fairly nebulous on the subject (as indeed they have been on the strength of the Legions themselves).
Back when the 13th company fluff was written (3rd edition, as I recall), it was generally agreed, following a statement of Andy Chambers', that the Legions had been around 10,000 strong, suggesting that (all other things being equal) they would have been intended to number around 770 Astartes at the time of their disappearance. (Presuming, of course, that they were the 13th company of 13, I don't recall whether that was ever explicitly made clear.) Given that the Heresy novels have multiplied the legions by at least an order of magnitude, we might now theoretically expect around as 7700, minus wastage, of course.
What would this mean for the Space Wolves? Well, since the return of the 13th company supposedly heralds the end of the universe, I would imagine they would find themselves somewhat concerned.

I imagine their would be a smithing montage, and then the great wolf stepping up onto a big rock silhouetted by the setting sun, looking ponderous. And then there would be a huge ass end-all fight, and they would rise from the ashes or some such.
That's how hollywood would do it, anyways.

That works for me; there'd probably have to be a mead-drinking montage too.

Hahahahaha yes, brilliant,
Then just as the credits end, they could also have a webway gate open and the Khan steps out of it , Corax Returning from the Eot, Vulcans return from where ever he's been (Someone Stag Do Probaley) and then maybe have Gulliman come out from his 'Stasis'.

"You strive for victory. That is obvious. What may be less obvious is the nature of victory. There are circumstances in which you can destroy the enemy utterly, without loss to your own forces, and yet the victory may be his. In all situations, you must first decide on the nature of victory, and then take steps to secure it. Avoid the instinct of fight first and think later." ( Leman Russ ) |

They would also require the surrender of elements of the rest of the chapter, perhaps one in every ten or one in every twenty marines, for assessment, to decide if the nature of the warp influence was tied to their geneseed.
The SW would almost certainly refuse, causing a civil war.
hahaha. No.
Good luck the inqusition tried before. And failed. Because what would do if these guys fought against the chaos forces with no taint of chaos. Nothing let them do their job. Its not heresy and the High lords of terra would never allow that.
lol, the Inquisition is the ultimate power in the Imperium. If they didn't succeed before, it's because they decided against it, not because they couldn't.
The fact that they've tried before would simply guarantee the fact they'd try again. You know, having their noses put out of joint the first time. Theres a lot of tension there, and the Imperium can easily withstand the loss of 3,000 Marines. The 13th Company has obviously been mutated by the warp, and the Inquisition, already being upset with the SW, would take any excuse to declare them excommunicate traitorus and launch a full blown crusade against them.

Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?" |
