Hey guys we have a bit of a ongoing discussion about the best dreadnought config?? I favor a grey knight dred w/ quad auto cannons and psybolt ammunition. What do you guys use?

For what army?

Seriously...

What I use is the following:

Iron hands (vanilla codex) Take ironclads with a heavy flamer in drop pod.

My chaos always takes dreads with dual DCCW and a heavy flamer.

My orks take a deffdread with dual skorchas, and then 3 units of 3 cans, with grotzooka, rokkit, and skorcha , with like weapons in the same unit.

What do you mean "for what army"? If you meant for my choice it's a GK dread and if you meant which army is the question referring to the answer is any! I just wanted to see the other popular/effective load outs that other people had come up with.

It's the psyfleman. It's not even in the same league as other dreadnoughts. Ironclads can be used in some lists, and the standard MM is good in a pod, and rifleman dreads are decent, but the psyfleman wins no contest.

Psyfleman is a GK dreadnought with 2 twin linked auto cannons and psybolt ammo. A rifleman dreadnought is a dreadought with just the 2 twin linked auto cannons.

The psybolt ammo gives +1 str so the psyfleman is effectively able to fire 4 twin linked str 8 shots the same as the krak missile.

^ What he said except from that it is ap4 instead of 3. You basically get 4 TL STR 8 AP 4 shots per dreadnought you ave and if people take them normally they will take 2-3 of them.

I prefer my Dreads to have a Storm bolter sttached to one Blood Talon, and a meltagun attached to the other Blood Talon.

Venerable I would go for assault cannon.

Yep. I've even faced 5 or 6 when Ven. Dreads are added. Just nasty and about impossible to kill at range.

Since I play Blood Angels, I love my Furioso Dreadnoughts. They are so good especially when I assault models with no Invul save.

Playing BA myself as well I like my furioso. Charge it into anything with no invunerable you are hitting on 3's and 4's then wounding on 2's getting to re-roll. Every unsaved wound is 1 more attack. i equip them with the heavy flamer and meltagun for the built in weapons.

Although I have seen template furiosos do well. Heavy flamer, Blood Fist and the frag cannon.

For GK psyflemen hands down.

Also rifleman is a mech form mechwarrior that has 4 guns (anti-aircraft but what the hell it looks the same) so a dread with 2 TL autocannon is called a 'rifleman'

Psybolt ammo +rifleman = psyfleman

seriously a mobile platform with 4 TL s8 shots is so good its stupid not to take them.

Rifledreads are the 5th edition setup.

Plasma is worse because you want to stop vehicles and you 2 TL S7 shots are much better than 1 S7 blast AP is not important against vehicles.

Assualt Cannon is worse, because 4 S6 Rending shots might be equally good, but you only have R24 and you want the transporters out as far away as possible.

Laser are fine when you need to fight tanks, but against transporters they are overkill. Multimelta is the same, cheaper with less range.

Infernocannon is hardly a choice, same for a second missle launcher.

Running Vanilla Marines, as said above with a Vulcan list I'll run MM/DCCW with heavy flamer in a drop pod. It would be cooler if I could throw it in one of the FW drop pods but normally I can't.

If I'm not running Vulcan, I'll run TLLC/ML. They draw fire, but that's not always a bad thing.

I like mixed builds (ranged w/ some close combat ability). So like, twin linked autocannon or something and a DCW w/ melta. The reason is simple, I find riflemen to be super-unfluffy builds, and I also dislike that my opponents easy-button solution to handling one is to tarpit it in close combat. I might lose a unit, but that dread is going nowhere. Also gives the dread extra options. If my melta and whatever primary ranged weapon I have can't handle a vehicle, I can still assault it. Usually not being a riflemen dreadnought has the advantage of not having a giant target painted on its head, so they survive longer too.

Vanilla marines? Yeah so I have been using psyflemans then I just didn't realise they were called that! They are so sweet at knocking out transports and larger models like crisis suits, terminators and 'nid warriours. I have yet to play a close combat dread so this may have to find its may onto my army in a drop pod...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
oh and this wasnt about the best GK dread, I just said my favourite dred is GK psyfleman. It was meant to include all sm variants and armies.

I've heard that a death company dread w/ blood talons in a dp is effective too. Anyone of you blood angels players ever used one?

I would think Stormravens would be better. A Death Company Dread in a DP is a BIIIIIG target. If it gets into combat it will EAT whatever it touches... but it cant assault on the turn it drops, whereas it can assault from a stormraven.

fair point! On the topic of storm ravens with a dread. Can you shoot at the dread? On one side its technically embarked but it must be strapped to the out side of the hull...

It confers all the benefits of being in a transport vehicle, so no. You even get to disembark from the front ramp (somehow).

Kinda depends on the role your dreadnought is fulfilling because they can do a lot of things.

For long range anti-tank, you got the dual autocannons.

For a generalist dreadnought, you can take a multimelta and replace the storm bolter with a heavy flamer. You now get some awesome anti-tank, some anti-infantry firepower, and you still can hurt some people in close combat with that dreadnought fist.

For close combat dreads you have to go with an ironclad in the normal space marines codex or furioso/Death company dreads in the BA codex.
