At least there's one thing I like that isn't being crapped out in 3D BS I'm completely unable to see!

Can't wait for April 1st!

The trailer is awesome. Yeah we are totally excited, too. I understand season 1 finally has been released on blu-ray! We'll probably do a full re-watch of season 1 before season 2 starts...

Cannot read this thread for fear of spoilers, but just getting to the end of Season 1 (it came out on DVD at the beginning of the week).

Whilst I think all the sex, violence and swearing is a bit over the top (extremes of this kind of thing never really add much to a story IMHO), I am nonetheless enjoying it.

Peter Dinklage in particular needs to take a bow. It's always good to see him have the opportunity to play a person with dwarfism rather than a dwarf of the fantasy variety (beards, pipes, big axes etc).

Have you read the books? Some of the sex on the show is over the top, but I think the violence was actually toned down in the tv series.

Season 2 is going to shock some people who haven't read the books. The stuff in the later books is much more graphic than Game of Thrones.

I'm hoping to finish reading the second book before the new season premiers on the 1st.

Out of all the characters, I'm rooting for Tyrion, Daenerys, Jorah, Jon Snow & Arya. Here's hoping they survive and make it through the series! (Tyrion espeically, the series would be dull without his witty charm, and as he says, "I like living!")

Tyrion at the end...I cannot express how awesome that threat is, or how stupid Cersei is.

Also, my first thought after "...a shadow on the wall." was "Eventually you need to come out of the cave."

Sweeeet !

This might be just what I was waiting for to finish A Dance with Dragons... If it doesn't make me start over from the first book once more, that is

Lots of interesting characters to be introduced in this season, I envy those of you who haven't read the books.

I don't find any aspect to be over-the-top. Nothing is done gratuitously in ASoIaF.

If his Wikipedia page is anything to go by, Mr Dinklage did receive a number of awards for his performance ! Though they mention "supporting actor". How the heck is Tyrion considered a supporting character ?

@Hyd

There are no "main" actors in Game of Thrones. At least I don't think so. Same thing happens for the regular TV Awards over here. A certain show sweeps every category except lead because there are specifically no leads in the show.

That makes sense. Well, he's a POV character in the books, but it's not conveyed in the series since it's related to the medium.

I really hope they keep the initial meeting between Tyrion and Cersi exactly as it's presented in the book! Nearly spewed my pop all over the page when I read that part!

Acutally, this Thursday I'm going to the Game of Thrones exhibit that's here in Toronto right now! They've got the Iron Throne, King Robert's crown, lots of the costumes, the banners of the 4 great houses, plenty of weapons (looks like Needle is included), at least one of the dragon's eggs...
Sadly I missed out on meeting Mr. Martin though and getting A Dance with Dragons autograhped.

There are 9 great houses aren't they
Stark, Lannister, Tully, Arryn, Greyjoy, Baratheon, Martell, Tyrell, Targaryen

More like 4-5. 4 Warden Houses and the royal house.

Warden of the North - Stark
Warden of the West - Lannister
Warden of the East - Arryn
Warden of the South - Martell
Royal House - Baratheon

Tyrell and Greyjoy would be slightly below those houses in terms of power and prestige.

I figure the relevant book is old enough that its ok.

Sort of like how its fine to say Dumbledore died.

But yeah, I've never hated a character more than Joffrey. The petty, vindictive nature is fine...its the incompetence and stupidity that piss me off.

If you're going to be evil, at least do it right for feths sake.

I probably wouldn't have cared so much about the bad things he did if Sansa Stark wasn't in the middle of the whole thing.

I guess that's why George R.R. Martin is such a good writer. I mean, you hear about all the hideous crap The Mountain gets up to, but almost all of that is off-stage and happens to faceless smallfolk. Joffrey has his kingsgaurd do all sorts of wrong to Sansa and we get our faces rubbed in it.

We do get a few upfront views of the Mountain's bastardry as well. And a major character walking around with permanent scarring given to him by the Mountain for little reason.

It's just that this is a story, and whether or not we like characters has little to do with whether or not we'd find them moral in real life. That Joffrey happens to be the kind of person that is both utterly hateful in a book and would be morally repugnant in real life just makes it all the more fun to hate him.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

There are nine "Great Houses", (or, there were before the Targaryens were removed from the equation) each ruling an area of Westeros.

The Riverlands - House Tully
The Iron Islands - House Greyjoy
The Reach - House Tyrell
Dorne - House Martell
The Weserlands - House Lannister
The Vale - House Arryn
The Storm Lands - House Baratheon
The North - House Stark
The Crown Lands - House Targaryen (obviously ruled by the king in King's Landing, which is from Baratheon/Lannister, with Lannister really claiming it).

Of these, seven are "Kingdoms". All except the Riverlands and the Crown Lands were there own kingdoms before Aegon united them, hence why it's the "Seven Kingdoms of Westeros".

The four Wardens -
Lord Eddard Stark - Warden of the the North - After he encountered a small problem, no one took the position until after the Red Wedding.
Lord Tywin Lannister - Warden of the West
Lord Mace Tyrell - Warden of the South
Lord Robert Arryn - Warden of the East

Not quite right as of the most recent book but correct at the start.

As for the trailer, there are few things that work so well as to send a shiver up my spine. This is one of them. Even more apt considering the connection between the use of the number seven in the song, and in the books. Seriously can't wait.

Oh well, only a year until it's out on DVD. A pox on pay per view satellite tv channels I tell you.

Yes, Mrs Flashman was upset by that too, but that's kind of the appeal really... a tv show where MCIS doesn't operate.

EDIT - Tsk, why isn't MCIS a recognised Dakka abbreviation - Main Character Immunity Syndrome

No matter how hard I try to like her, I can't really feel 100% sorry for Sansa. She's a complete idiot, as it was plainly evident to her just how horrific a person Joffrey is, but she still only cared about becoming his queen.
I mean hell, Sansa's the one who outright betrays her familiy to the Lannister's when she goes to the queen and blubbers about how 'unfair' it is that Ned is sending the girls back home to Winterfell because of how dangerous things are getting.

It's still hard to read/watch what that little fether is going to Sansa and how he's torturing her, but she did pretty much bring it upon herself. She's not nearly as innocent a character like her sister or Dany are.

I got the DVDs for season 1 over the weekend and my wife and I watched it all between Saturday and Sunday (we've both read the books too).

I thought the series did a great job of conveying the books, and if there was a little more sex, at least it was done in a way that allowed a character to soliloquy over concepts that were expressed more in thought and backstory in the books (Littlefinger's backstory, for example). Besides, half the appeal of HBO shows is knowing you'll see nekkid people.

Casting was spot on, and now I'm just waiting until season two is released...

Yeah, casting was great. And I think they made the right move by moving all the kids ages up by 2-3 years.

Joffrey is pretty despicable, but it's hard to blame him too much. He's only 12 or 13, so he's not totally responsible for his actions yet. And, he grew up with an evil mother and a father that actively disliked him. I can't imagine many 13 year olds that grew up in that situation being much better than he was.

Agree completely here. The idea that they'd be putting 13-year olds in sex scenes (as in the book, and, historically accurate too, Henry VII's mother was 13 when she was married and knocked up, gave birth at 14) is more than just a little offsetting.

The one thing that bothered me the most in the TV series...

Spoiler:

Robin Arryn still breastfeeding although clearly at least 10 years old. I've nothing against breastfeeding in general, and reading it in the books didn't have quite the impact that seeing a ten-year old actor at his mother's breast did. I'm surprised they could even film that legally, or that the actor's parents were okay with it, although I read that the actor was from Brazil so maybe their standards are different.
