I've been a GK player scince I started gaming but for a while I used tyranids for a bit of a change. Now Im building an all new gk army (as you can tell from my other numerous questions about them) and have been just outfiting them with force swords until I read in a tactica its better to mix and match in a unit.
Is it worth it?
What are some good combinations?

Well...GKSS should stay away from halberds. Not worth the points for the extra ini I often see paladins using halberds + daemonhammers, so that may be worth a shot. Purifiers I think are often fielded with halberds. That's all I could help you with.

You should have at least one Hammer per unit. It also might be worth it to Mastercraft the Hammers. I'm not sure if Halberds on Strike Squads are worth it, but on Purifiers it most definitely is because they are so cheap and Purifiers come with 2 Attacks base.

Strike Squads in general need to stay cheap. Halberds make them almost as expensive as Purifiers but without their nifty abilities.
Strike Squads also only really work if you are focusing on them as your entire force. They don't really add anything to Terminator or Purifier lists.

You can do the same thing with Interceptor squads, who can also give you extremely mobile Psycannons.
I think that is a better source of Warp Quake if you need it.

What's the point of GKSS anyway? Terminators are troops, and they are tougher.
Interceptors have more dakka, can use quake and they are more mobile
Purifiers get halberds for cheap.
And Paladins are stupidly tough.

Sorry my English was awful in that last post. The only reason I took GKSS was because they were cheaper and I couldn't fit an interceptor squad with the points I had left
OK so what about for in a termy/paladin squad? I usually just give them all halberds for the I6..

For Paladins you will diversify them to allow wound allocation. This means a mix of weapons.
Swords are a good choice for Terminators and Paladins because they gain a 4+ invuln in combat. Its a really good thing when facing opponents with power weapons.

I think that while mixing weapons is fine, keeping something the same.is better for writing.army lists, being quock and hells the opponent.
Interceptors and SS don't gain the benefit from swords so go falchions. Termies are objective hllders so swords. Paladins and purifiers are deadly with halberds and cheap. Make sure to add in a Daemon Hammer on PA Justicats and a Stave on another.
In the Purifiers and Termies give Justicars Staves to help against Perils.

I thought nemesis warding staffs only gave you and inv save for wounds caused in cc. Or do perils of the warp count as that?

yes. They faqed it to work against all wound in CC. If the perils happened in CC, it counts.

yeah so if he suffered perils of the warp while not in combat it wouldn't provide him and invulnerable save. I've always been of the opinion that they are quite expensive though?

Yes it is the most expensive. But if the Justicar is alive in a squad all perils are allocated to him, therefore.protecting heavy weapons and other NFWs. By keeping him alive.longer you protect them longer.

The justicar should never take a hammer, unless you have no choice. First perils is likely to kill him, and bang goes your anti vehicle hammer. Definitely not MC it - its not worth the points.
Unless youre running paladins staffs arent great. 2 halberds, 2 swords and a hammer is my usual mix on a 5 man termie squad

On Termies and purifiers. Yes the perils will cost you your hammer. Zon other PA squads, the Justicar has an attack extra than the rest so that is +1 Str 8/10 TH attack with Daemonbane And the chance of perils is small so I feel it's ok.

Similar ish question about Nemesis dreadknights...
The codex entry says you can choose two weapons from the following list (guns) and then you can swap a nemesis doomfist for a hammer or great sword.
So have I read it correctly that, if you were so inclined, you could give your dreadknight two guns and both the great sword and daemon hammer?
Basically I'm asking if the guns replace the doom fists as they do on dreadnoughts or, as I read it, you get the guns additionally?

The guns do not replace the Doomfists. They are wrist mounted.
The only gun worth it is the heavy incinerator.
Heavy Incinerator and Personal Teliporter is the best set up. Maybe a Greatsword but thats debatable.

Heavy Incinerator and Psycannon. PT and Greatswird. Best set up. Hammer is nice, especially at Int 4 but you get plenty other Str 10 hammers. PT is a must.
I don't think you can take both CC weapons though.

Yeah, only one of the CCWs can be taken.
You basically choose between +1A(2 Doomfists) but only Str6, Str10 at I4(Daemonhammer), or Rerolls at Str6(Greatsword)

The hammer seems a waste on him.. He's str 7 with hammerhand. That wounds most on 2's, he's a MC so ignores armor and gets 2d6 vs vehciles... PT and Incinerator are the best imo and don't make a 300 pt 2 wound pt sink.
