Et In Arcadia Ego
|
The fell beasts named by scholars as Warpfire Dragons are hateful and ruinous creatures, albeit thankfully a rare sight in the Old World. Their long, charred-black bodies constantly twitch and shudder as if tormented by unseen blades, and clusters of strange crystals mar their scaled hides. The very air about them throbs with tainted power, and their breath is like no other dragon’s; a coruscating blast of scintillating red-black lightning that can scorch even ethereal spirits and other creatures of magic.
The destructive power and twisted form of a Warpfire Dragon is fuelled and maintained by devouring pure warpstone. Only the mighty constitution of a dragon could withstand the effects of so much concentrated power without it being torn to pieces, although the violent death of such a creature often leads to a spectacular and explosive end. The scarcity of warpstone often brings a Warpfire Dragon into conflict with the Skaven, and it is with the promise of this immensely powerful material that the most arrogant (or insane) of wizards will seek to strike a bargain with the creature; although it is said that even the legendary Binding Scrolls of Kadon are not enough to fully control such a malign and wicked beast.
The Warpfire Dragon, model designed by Steve Whitehead, is a complete resin and plastic kit, available to pre-order now for despatch from Monday 2nd April. This magnificently detailed kit stands just over 5" tall with a 9" wingspan, making a fantastic centrepiece for any Warhammer army.Experimental rules, taken from the forthcoming Warhammer Forge Monstrous Arcanum book, are available to download now.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

Cool pose, not too sure about its head though.
Has it got 4 eyes? Or are its nostrils just really close to the eye sockets?
Ah right close up image attached now, a bit better.

Wow, almost no texture on the skin. While the Chaos Dragon suffers from a similar non-scaled malady, at least there's enough detail going on that you don't notice it. Very disappointing. edit: Plus, they should have at least fixed the gaps on the display model.

Hmmmmm....... I'm not sold on this, but it's nice to see them try something a little out of the norm with the head. However, I don't think it all came together.

I like it, the pose is good, as for the head, it makes sense because what it is. However seems to be crossbred with a tyranid.

I like the head (particularly the multiple eyes, after all, magic in the Old World can have some interesting results), but I think it's a bit too large in proportion to the tail (which would after all need to counterbalance such a big noggin) and the wings (I know it's hard to scale up wings to the appropriate size on any miniature, but I live in hope that a day will come when there are realistically sized wings for everyone!). The rules look pretty neat, and I especially like the explosive potential of the Great Warpfire Dragon. Just throw it right into the middle of your enemy's battleline, and watch their face when you explain what happens when if they kill it...

Very... "Legion of Everblight" in appearance (who incidentally take a few visual cues from Nids, woo, it's gone full circle nearly!), just fill in the eyes and you've got a cool new Warbeast for them, which I may just do myself!

Undetailed, the head size does not match the body and those wings would not support the body during flight. 4/10

I adore the head and the wings. Everything else is very meh looking. It's undetailed in most places, and when it is detailed, it's over detailed. It looks like the body and head were built by two separate people with two different pieces of concept art.

I have to say i kind of like it. It has an intresting look and is diffrent enought from all the other Thunder Lizards out there. What Im not to happy with is lately FW has been making these new monsters in a even stronger Mono-pose form. With little ablity to Pose it (easly) to fit my army makes it a low priority purchess for me.

The price is pretty good though: £40 for a piece of resin that size is far from unreasonable.

I like the pseudo-triceratops head. The wings are also nice. The body detail isn't as scarred as the head, though. It looks sort of tacked on.
Certainly an interesting piece, though.

The price seems right. I know a certain dragon hating friend who's getting a nifty birthday present this year.
Might have to use green stuff to cover that first set of eyes. Nice concept, just looks out of place to me.

It actually has decent rules.. Is this the trend? The more mediocre the model the better the rules? That chaos dreadnought they just released has some of the worst rules made but is an awesome model

Interesting but not a wowing piece. Honestly the head of the dragon doesn't seem to match the body in style. Would have been better to see more scales on the body, but hey, for not much more than a plastic dragon you're getting one slightly less cartoony, which is always a plus.
Rules are vague as usual, but the physical cost of the model isn't prohibitive (at £15 less than the carmine dragon).

It definitely seems to be lacking detail on everything but the head, but I'd like to see it painted before I truly judge that. I would be interested to see how it looks with a few different riders on it though, since it seems like it would be a very dynamic and unique dragon mount.
