Got given an hour off work as the Queen is visiting York today.
Have to say I've never seen my home city so busy.

Yeah I moved to York when I was 4, (29 now) I have no intention to ever leave, love the place, the history and the atmosphere. It's an odd place as technically it's not big enough to be classed as a city, But the minster grants that right automatically.
It's got a big city feel in the centre, with a market town feel to the outskirts.
I would advise anyone who has the chance to visit do so. It's a great place.

Yeah, like a few feet away. It was too packed any closer to the minster, You got a very good spot. Great pap shot into the car.
Yeah was good to see, I like checking out anything historic that happens in York and I only work down the road so it was easy to pop along for her arrival.
Shame I'm now back at my desk as it's a great day outside. Automatically Appended Next Post: mattyrm wrote:deejaybainbridge wrote:ifStatement wrote:Heh trademark wave and everything.

The weather was appalling yesterday as well, proof of course that God himself loves the Queen.
Well, its not as impressive as him giving Kim Jong Il 8 holes in one of his first ever golf game.. but still! Automatically Appended Next Post: deejaybainbridge wrote:

Negative, I'm a civvie now mate.
You don't get Commandos in York, I think its mainly signals and TA/medical battalions.

Looks a lovely day.
Here in Richmond, a lot of restaurants and other local businesses have pictures up of when the Queen visited two years ago for the quatercentenary.

Is it too far fetched for an american to just blend into the woodwork of british society, if I wanted to live there for a while?

No, that's not the issue. It's just that the NoVA is actually a suburb of DC and doesn't really reflect what the rest of state is like in any measure.

Could say the same thing about Maryland. I've lived here my whole life in PG county, and you go a little bit north or south, and it's a totally different place. Lots of farms, interstates and BJs Wholesales.
I'm a big fan of Virginia, actually. They really have great scenery there. Nothing beats going for a drive up in the mountains and seeing the rolling hills of green swim under you...

Yes, it's good to know that when the Queen visits she has some nice things to look at. And of course, our Commonwealth was named according to her namesake.

Nope, We had a family from Michigan live across the street from us for four years and they settled in no problem.
It's the accent that'll give it away. ha-ha.

No I did a half career, I'm not as much of a bad ass anymore because I'm getting old. I still crack plenty of physical training, but I haven't slept in a cave for a few years.. You get soft sleeping in beds and using power showers instead of scrubbing yourself with some leaves in the river that flows through Helmand Province.

Interesting is one word.. and it is. Honking is another though, gak food, no bed, no showers.. It looks good on the movies, but living in the gak is.. well.. gak.
The good thing is, you appreciate everything once you get home. Especially booze, hot baths and ice cream.
