I like your thinking mate. Not many of us Yorkies on Dakka. Defiantly be up for doing that at some point.

Me and Matty have toyed with the idea of posting a video batrep from our regular gaming meet-ups - they'd probably be quite funny, but in no way suitable for a family website such as Dakka...

RE: Americans settling in to life in the UK - All the Americans I've met who live here seem to love it. Sure, it has it's negatives for some people, I'd wager; it would suit more liberal Americans (such as my Texan course co-ordinator and my (now sadly deceased) former professor from Chicago), than conservatives, IMO. Also, most have commented on how the culture is very similar in a lot of ways, and the differences are nowhere near as extreme as they are made out in the media.

Ask mattyrm - his missus is from California. She seems to like it. Well, the pubs at least!

Its a fair bet that an American expat in England is at least a little bit of an anglophile, and therefore probably liberal, so that follows.

No no, she actually hated the English when she met me.. She had IRA flags on her wall and a poster of Gerry Adams over the fireplace, but then I put my camelbak on, dropped my breeches and savaged her for 12 hours.. next thing you know she's all "Gaw'd save the Queen" and "pass me a crumpet guv'nor" and everything.

True story!*

*not actually very true

Any american should blend in fine in the UK. Plus it's worth metnioning that it's not exactly uncommon to find yanks in the UK. You have to remember that the US has a relatively huge population and, although you're not the chinese or indians, there's enough of you to go around.

+ if you do come don't miss Cumbria. The UK's most beautiful countryside and a mountain biker's dream. + more traditional local ales than you can shake a stick at.

No, that's not the issue. It's just that the NoVA is actually a suburb of DC and doesn't really reflect what the rest of state is like in any measure.

Could say the same thing about Maryland. I've lived here my whole life in PG county, and you go a little bit north or south, and it's a totally different place. Lots of farms, interstates and BJs Wholesales.

I'm a big fan of Virginia, actually. They really have great scenery there. Nothing beats going for a drive up in the mountains and seeing the rolling hills of green swim under you...

Wait, did you say they have wholesale BJs there?

True dat. Clean bathrooms and beds are also way up there - but I'm decadent.

Anyways, visited York once. Was in Sheffield (depressing town) for a course, and finished the exam three days early, so decided to get in for a few days' worth of paid vacation.
Lovely town. Really like the walled-in city center with all its little shop, the Dungeons of course (great fun them). Viking museum was a bit of a letdown though.

York is great. An awesome city to just wander about in. So much character.

Even if it is still technically legal to shoot me with a bow and arrow while i'm there.

I absolutely loved the train museum, It reminded me of the old Glasgow museum of transport before it got 'upgraded'.

Fortunately (though, at the same time regrettably), the Statute Law (1998) Repeals Act means you're entirely safe from volleys of arrows. (Legally-speaking, at least.)

I'd be up for a York Dakka meeting, if somebody (looking at you, Matty) could be bothered to organise one.

Edit: oh, for the sake of it, God Save HRM.

Ill have a bash at jacking one up then, I cant see it being an issue for maybe 4-6 blokes to meet in GW on a Saturday/Sunday for a few games, but if we have a few more then feth knows. I don't think they are massive on space in GW York.

There's a university in York. They are normally very happy to hire out space during the holidays.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

This is looking like a good idea. Yeah GW York is pretty small, they only have the one 6"x4". But I can pop in today and see what the dealio is with booking it for a Sat/Sun afternoon.
