I'm really not sure about what I think of that... the words 'no fethin' mercy' come to mind.
The first boat he was shooting at; they continued fire even after it crashed into their hull, correct? I presume the guys were no longer a threat once that happened and yet they continued to shoot at them.
But, to be honest, I dunno, I guess that unless you kill them they're just going to keep at it.

The Somali Pirates tend to get very close and board larger ships, they were still very much a threat IMO...

I had thought I would be one of those ones when the royal navy shoot the boat up after they have arrested and removed the pirates from the boat.
To know that the gak bags are actually being shot at rather than repatriated gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I'm going to the pub now with a smile on my face, cheers OP.

Maybe it's just me but. . . how is this enjoyable again? Violence against any person, regardless of who or what they are, or whether they intended violence against anyone themselves, is not something to be enjoyed or applauded. I personally found the video disgusting.
It may be satisfying on a level of 'there's a few less pirates!' but it fails to address why the pirates are out there in the first place. These guys didn't grow up wanting to raid the seven seas, they were fishermen.
Then some European corporations took advantage of the total lack of effective Somali government to dump their toxic waste in Somali waters. Guess what happened to the fish.
Is it any wonder some of them looked at those ships off in the horizon and said 'how about we hit them back where it hurts!'
The only problem with this video is there was no enormous bloated defense budget expenditure here. Alternatively it would have been way cooler with a good old fashioned WWII era 20mm cannon.
The gold standard for ranch and home defense.

It's like Ender's Game.
Once you've pissed off the pirates by shooting at them your best strategy is to hit them so hard that any survivors tell their friends never, ever to attack a ship of XXXX Line ever again.

Hard to sink something made of wood...
If Hollywood has taught us anything then it is that even wood can lose buoyancy. I cite the case of Kate Winslet and the big wooden door. The added weight of even one Leonardo Di'Caprio dangerously compromises the big wooden door as a life-preserving float. Now imagine that that big wooden door was being riddled with even comparatively light rifle fire, with the added weight of several Somalis, or a single Leonardo Di'Caprio.
My vote however, goes with the 2cm cannon.

No. If Hollywood has taught us anything, its that things blow up when shot. Clearly this video is just a prank depicting an elaborate game of paintball
Skiffs look like they could be fiberglass just as much as wood is a possibility...
In any case, small arms fire is enough to tear up planking on the thing and cause it to break apart/hit the outboard motor and make it inoperable or just create enough drag that they can't return to shore/mothership.

International law of the sea prohibits civilian vessels from carrying armaments over a certain size. Small arms are fine, but it machine guns are carried the vessel is considered militarised.

The loss of life is regrettable, certainly (I'd say all the pirates on the first skiff are killed. Note how it rams into the ship and then just drifts back as the cargo ship continues on its way).
By the way, this reminds me of a great story regarding pirates and Julius Caesar. As a young man Caesar was taken hostage by pirates in the mediterranean. They immediately recognized him as a valuable captive. So off they went with him to their pirate island hideout. Caesar sent some of his entourage back home to collect the ransom. So he's hanging out with the pirates for a few weeks and gets to know them. They grant him all the respect his class merits. He starts joking with them, "You guys! Yoooouu! I'm telling you, y'all ought to be crucified hohoho!" Eventually the ransom is paid and Caesar returns to Rome. He immediately gathers up a large military expedition, returnes to the pirate hideout and has all the pirates crucified.
True story.

Sure its constructive. 20mm nailguns are highly constructive tools to restoring the crew's sense of calm.

Unfortunately the Royal Navy's 8-barrelled "pom-poms" were generally considered the worst AA guns used by the allied navies - the Bofor and Oerlikons were far more effective due to superior range and speed of the shells.
The organ gun takes first prize for awesome looks though!
