I don't understand the obsession with MMOs. Has any western MMO sold well enough to justify not making a single player game instead other than WoW, Guild Wars, and perhaps SWToR?

From the sound of it, this one is going to be quite different; It's got three factions and a sort of PvPvP, sure. But from the sound of it, you actually have to know whats going on; you get told from someone "Go to the library and figure out how these creatures feast", you actually have to look up the myths of the creatures your fighting to figure out what you can about them. Not sure how this actually works, but that's what they are saying.

Basically, every rumor is true. The Boogeyman exists. The world is Hollow. The world will end on 2012, the world WON'T end on 2012. It supposed to be all sorts of crazy and YOU have to figure out whats what.

Everquest, Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest 2, and Rift.

All of these have done pretty well for themselves in the past and one or two are still doing okay in the present. MMOs make a lot of money but are very risky to get in to. Especially when you have titans such as WoW and SW going right now. WoW may be on its way out and that is opening up a bit of a vacuum of possible subscribers, especially considering SW is still getting used to doing an MMO and doing some pretty trial and error things as far as patches go.

The obsession with MMOs is that one does not have to physically go out and meet people to be a part of a community. It is like Facebook, except you have gameplay and objectives. Think of a giant chat room, where you can kill the other players in the room if you catch them on their own in certain areas.

Its basically what everyone is saying who isn't completely brainwashed by the minor hype train for the game.

The idea is cool and it looks like a game with potential, but the game is just gak when you break it down to gameplay mechanics - the so called "meat and potatoes".

I'm talking about companies obsessions with MMOs. The maintenance costs for them must be staggering and the development, to actually make a quality game, is probably significantly longer than that of a single player game.

Unless you have at least a 500,000 strong subscription base, I just can't see it being justifiable.

I've been following this game for the last few years, just seemed interesting that it was sort of like Supernatural MMO (well... season 1 supernatural before it became all "ZOMG DEVILS AND HELL IS COMING TO EARTH" and when it was more "urban legends vs shotguns")

That being said, all in game video ive watched i havent been impressed which saddens me :(

I think it is one of those things where it is a make it or break it deal. It is very risky but there is a chance you will end up getting a huge payoff and end up becoming a powerhouse company. Much like Bioware and Blizzard.

WoW in its most profitable time made Blizzard a staggering amount of money. 12 million subscriptions at $15 a month? $180 million a month just on subscriptions. Then WoW was milking it for all it was worth with in game items you could pay $20 for, character transfers and other such things.

You can make a stupid amount of money if you hit the market just right. People wanna take that risk.

Well, I just got invited to the closed beta, anyone else playing?

It's supposed to actually be like a blend of an MMO and "alternate reality games" like second life.

There's no classes or levels, everything is skill based-- so there is no level grinding supposedly. Large amounts of customization except in pvp where uniforms for factions are assigned. The game is designed to be able to be played in single player mode supposedly.

It looks interesting.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Yeah, I like their pitch, but i've been burned before. I did think Anarchy Online was brilliant if thoroughly flawed, so that is a point in their favor.

Well sadly, my POS graphics card cant handle the pressure. I was going with the Illuminati but I could only stomach the jerkyness for about 5 minutes. I bought this PC because everything else on it was pretty good, but the card was gak, so it was cheap. Oh well, next year Im thinking of putting much better card in anyways

At least let me know how it is

I'm actually playing Illuminati to save the Templar stuff for launch, i've only gotten to the first area outside the starting one, but it's pretty sweet.

I can not confirm nor deny that I have been playing in the closed beta for months. I can also not confirm nor deny that if PMed I can answer any question people may have.

I will say this, the game is fantastic.

P.S. Illuminati all the way

Back in the English morass

I played in a beta weekend a few weeks ago. To be honest it wasn't what I was expecting, in bad way, It was far closer to WoW than I was led to believe. Apparently it has improved a lot since then though.
I got an invite to this week ends beta so hopefully it will have improved sufficently to hold my interest.

Its a lot better than SWtOR if nothing else.

Bah, Templars. And I pretty much gave up playing the closed beta halfway through the second zone - I wants to save it for launch.

I'm very unlikely to play at all at launch so I'm going to do all I can in the beta.

Ditto I made it not much further then that and did the first 2 instances a bunch. Finally got to the point where I was 100% sold on the game and now want to wait for launch.

It's a really good game, but you have to strike a balance... much of the good in the game comes from actually having to figure stuff out. This holds for both builds and quests. It can be frustrating sometimes, and I have quit quests that were too annoying, but it is super rewarding when you figure out some of the harder ones. In keeping with this, I thoroughly recommend leaving the 'general' and 'help' chat channels. And if you can find a 'deck' that is close to what you want to do, it is usually a good place to start when building a character - most of them are fairly effective from what I've gathered. By the time you are ready to branch out, you ought to have a solid grasp of the game play.
