As a dwarf player for many years and with the influx of new army books and new units, I feel that the dwarfs are the only army with a lack of diversity. No cavalry, which is fine by me, but I was just wondering why they dont have any type of units outside of infantry and war machines. Maybe some golem type things or something else. And the fact that dwarfs newest unit is the Master Engineer, which is just a revamped Engineer from the old book. Dwarfs maybe in the decline in fluff and the most resistant to change but I'd like to see something new to keep things interesting.
Dwarfs historically are and always will be resistant to change; and typically very rigid in their war style. They are built to stand behind bulwarks and walls and force you to come to them. Siege warfare suits them just fine and in fact they would prefer it. Although I am not a Dwarf player in this game I really would like to see them get some mobile units other than the gyrocopters... sorry as a fantasy player I just don't like them give them boars or some sort of animal to ride into battle...

They are due for a new book within the next 6 months to a year. The gyrocopter will get a boost, they will remove the partial hit with the template so all partials mean auto hits like everything else in the game. For a big monster I could see a golem or even a blimp/warship of some sort, think Arachnox or Warsphinx with a crew and also like a Necrosphinx or Terroghiest can fly.

I think Dwarves will get some sort of giant Golem and some other mechanical/stone things, and maybe some 10 plastic kit slayers or something like that.
Likely some dual use big kit, plastic slayers, iron breakers and hammerers would be nice too. My one fear of them is with the dumbing down of magic items in 8th edition, from several pages to 1-2 pages I am worried about what they will do with the rune system. I can also see some kind of rune or item to grant hatred like book of grudges, Greenskins only is kinda lame, Skaven have been equally devastating to the Dwarf race, and Chaos Dwarfs are a stain on all Dwarfs so I would think they would be added too.

The weird thing about people desiring golems is the fact that dwarves hate magic imbued life. There's a reason why they hated chaos dwarves and why only they for the longest time had access to golems.
As one said, they are very resistant to change, though they would add new technologies that they found stable.
Sasa0mg wrote:From what I can tell about the lore, they will only introduce new tech thats been approved by the elders as respect for the old ways and all that.
They might not agree with giving a golem life of its own but I could see them making a "walker" out of it.
Arguably that's still magically imbued life.
I'd say its highly likely a 2 option plastic kit will appear. Most likely some sort Mechanical construct I would wager on. Walker/flier options maybe. Or some sort of mobile armored artillery. Plastic slayers would be pretty amazing.

If the gyro was cheaper and moved to special, then we would have a cavalry equivilent. The problem them would be that the Special slot is already crowded-maybe move Miners to Core to make room??
I can see them making a lot more out of Engineers. I have seen rumours that Dwarfs are going to get a lot more Steampunk, and making more of Engineers would fit-Maybe if you take an engineer with a certain upgrade you can take Special 'Copters (Air Cav??) Maybe well get "cyber Dwaefs" with mechanical body parts. Maybe we'll get a steram powered construct. I think that something like the 40k Dreadknight, but steam powered, would fit ok.
The problem with regular cavalry is that there's not something that really fits the whole "underground" theme, 'cept Moles maybe. Yes, Bear Cavalry would be awesome-but do Bears live deep underground?? No. Also, Dwarfs are said not to trust anything excpt Dwarfs..Why would they then ride on another creature? A device, created by the Engineers, would fit better.
I'd quite like to see the army be able to develop as eithre a more traditional force, or a more technological one-maybe with a split between traditional and radical factions in Dwarf culture. Nice to see a bit of tension...
I reckon they would have some sort of clockwork creature that would operate without magic, maybe with a dwarf controller on top pulling levers and steering it.

You could have a unit of 9 tacticals that are flipping off the enemy with both hands, they still have a bolt pistol and bolt gun.

Thats what I meant when I was saying about a walker type thing, but knowing dwarfs it would likely have a cannon on it somewhere. Dwarf equivalent to a leadbelcher anyone?
Yes please, fluff changes every book/edition... Back in the day that might have been cool, after 30 years it's boring.
Also since no one else has said it (except me to myself everythime I see this thread, "I doubt the dwarves would be concerned with the lack of an old wooden ship."

Hey now, the empire has made Wooden Ship Tanks, I'm sure the dwarves would enjoy those.
As Kiwidru has pointed out, I don't think the historical fluff is going to necessarily hold much weight with future changes. For example, we just recently discovered that the Empire has, in fact, been using demigryphs for a super long time...
I fully expect some other unit types to come on board, and though I'm not necessarily for it, I would not be surprised to see Dwarfs get some kind of magic equivalent...

This exactly. It will be another case of 'this unit has been around for ages....honest. Just not anywhere that anyone noticed....'
I really hope dwarves dont get magic *crosses fingers and toes*

I've been playing dwarfs for a long time, and I used to have the beard to match, but from an army building standpoint I am pretty much maxed out. I have at least one of everything, but mostly two. I would really enjoy the chance to see something come out to be a center piece for my army, outside of Thorgrim. As far as fluff is concerned it would sadden me if they did just <insert new unit that apparently has been around forever>. The Engineers Guild is in my opinion a vastly untapped resource for both fluff and units. Also where does the whole dwarfs hate magically imbued life appear in the fluff I've never seen that before. Dwarfs are an old, stubborn race but their power is waning, and desperate times call for desperate crazy engineered contraptions with big guns or hammers .

Very well.

would like to point out, i know its an obscure bit of fluff but in Deathmastersnikch fluff in skaven book it makes referance to a cog dragon.
ImO the new writer of dwarf book wont know that the fluff is there as its so obscure but meh wanted to contribute to discussion

May your gains be plentiful.
Go forth and LIFT.
Fellow Dwarf here. The problem as many have stated is reflectance in the fluff to change. But if GW does not want the Dwarf franchise to fade it will have to do something. Lack of units in the calvary, MI, Monster will mean that at least one of those is brought out.
Personally, I would be content with point adjustments, cleaning of the Special's and some sort of golem type MI.
My big fear is that it will come at the cost of a nerfed Rune system.

Honestly, I'd rather keep my wide variety of runes than gain fancy MI or cav.
I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...
I think the most likely will be some runic constructs- monstrous infantry style, and something big, like in those awesome pieces of art in the books.

I would consider a massive based thing garunteed. Every 8th army is getting them, and it seems to be the way warhammer is planning on fighting the size creep (in terms of scale) of other mini companies. Past that I would bet on MI before Calvary, or skirmishers... But MC is also highly concievable considering they are also a 'forward concept' unit

Just for the fun of it I would like them to make dwarven calvary with dwarves riding on donkeys with great axes (Skull Pass anyone?) But I could think of a hundred units they could make for the dwarves that came with the fluff and could fit perfectly (King of Karak Kadrin that allows Slayer units to be Core Choices)
