http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?aId=14700053&_requestid=4590096

My buddy Kevin, Top Necron last ToS and I are thinking of going.

I just wish it was in Vegas again.

Vegas was boss last year, super fun.

Memphis, well, might not be worth the trip from the west coast.

I will be heading out there. Probably driving from San Diego and making a road trip out of it if I can get enough peeps that are interested in that kind of thing.

I'd find out first from GW who is running it. Ed Spettigue isn't there. The person that took over, and then cancelled, the IGT season, doesn't play the game. Her boss doesn't play either. It's going to come down to who they toss the task of running the event off to. Don't expect the level of tournament that Ed put together.

And don't expect any frills. GW is cutting costs this year. They recently went to 'paperless invoicing'. Meaning they ship me stuff, and don't want the expense of putting a packing list in the box. I have to print it out myself. Seriously, if they are worried about the cost of printing a sheet of paper when I order a thousand dollars in product, they aren't going to be spending a lot on TOS.

JMHO, take it with a grain of salt.

Coop, you're thinking about road tripping it?

Damn, that might be worth it! My buddy has a sweet RV, might be able to convince him to come along and do the trip right! We could stop at game stores along the way, and play people. That would be super cool!

Good points. The structure of the event last year was pretty crappy though. Some of it was great, but mostly weird. It would be more for the trip and the fun times with friends than the actual tournament in this case, I think.

I got my ticket at last years in Vegas but I doubt I will go all the way to Memphis. If it was Ed and crew again I would be more likely to go, those guys were great.

They should have kept it in Vegas.

Hahaha, that's funny. I did not show up because I met some girls and we went to a pool party at Cosmopolitan instead of playing, but hey, I think I made the right choice!

Sorry to your buddy, that was lame of me to just bail. A lot of guys didn't show the next day, one of the danger of an event in Vegas, I think.

If you plan the route so you come through St. Louis...which shouldn't be too tough if you take 70 across the country (or even 44), you can pick me up along the way, or hell even crash my place for a night. (Memphis is only about 4 hours south of STL.)

You could also blog/videolog the whole trip for epicness.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too! That would be awesome. SO long as it doesn't look like it's going to be a crappy event, this may have to happen!

If you guys road trip it, not only do you need to stop at shops for games, but you also need to play a game with the RV in motion just to prove how hardcore you are.

Too far and its too close to other things I have going on. Vegas is an easy trip, but I cannot justify flying to a place I really do not care for with the wonky format.

You know what GW should stop doing to save money? Stop flying and hoteling your 100 managers to memphis every 3 months to train them on sales pitches, thats at least $40,000 dollars they are burning every year over nothing.

As for Throne of Skulls, is it still BJ scores are more important then actually winning?

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Ravenous clearly has a better way of training 100 managers - if he was their boss he'd probably tell them to read a manual. Who needs face to face contact? Who needs to meet their peers?

Maybe you don't like the results of the GW training, but I think investing in your staff through training is rarely a bad thing.

And you clearly have no idea what you're talking about, those meetings are a waste of time, they make you do the sales pitches over and over when in reality only work on morons.

Last meeting they had them come down to paint a model and learn how to pitch the new paints. Whoopidy doo, 10 grand blown on something they shouldnt have a hard time doing. I've worked for the great enemy and I understand showing new people demos but harassing existing costumers is a good way to chase them out of your store and right into Warmachine.

Ravenous, the reality is you don't know what's going on in those meetings. You speculate, and you may hear things second hand, but you're not there so you don't know.

The reality is - when you're hanging out in a retail store - the staff will probably try to sell you things! I've been to stores where it was well done, and I've been to stores where it was done poorly.

Again, you might not like the results of GW's training. But to say that a company investing money to train their staff is a waste is silly.

Throne of Skulls last year was a ton of fun. Vegas was certainly part of it, but the way GW organized it, the food and hospitality, and the players in attendance made it great. Even for format, which was idiosyncratic and complained about loudly by people who didn't go, added to the fun. Being compared to the other people running your book was good; it widened the possibilities for victory, and it incentivized people running a wider variety of codices, which they did.

I think you're wrong, but more importantly this is off topic. Take it to its own thread if you need another place to complain about GW.
