Blood-Drenched Death Company Marine
|
Inquisitors are referred to Lord / Lady by subordinates
Marines are referred to 'my Lord' by guardsmen, brother/Title and/or name by peers
Guardsmen are referred to by their rank or surname
Sisters of Battle would be Rank/Title by officers and marines I'm guessing?
What do SoB call marines - Brother? (seeing as they are daughters of the emperor and marines are sons of the emperor?) What do marines call SoB?

Marines probably call them Sister unless they have a title like Prioress, Canoness and Palatine. Then I'm not sure they'd break up Canoness into Commander (generally the one everyone means when they say Cannoness; commands ~200), Canoness Preceptor (~1k) and Canoness Superior (entire order). Though out of them I think they'd probably acknowledge the Canoness Superior.
Depends on the marine chapter in a way I suppose, for example SW and Ultras I suppose would address them somewhat differently.
As for the other way around I guess the SoB would call them Brother or their appropriate rank.

We are not amused.
On topic, they'd be called Sisters by Space Marines. Despite some friction over their conflicting views on Imperial faith, the two have mutual respect for the other's reputation.
Example:
Ordinary Sister - Sister *insert name if applicable*
Sister Superior - the same
Canoness (or any other rank) - Sister-Canoness (kinda like how Space Marines call their Captains 'Brother-Captain')

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

There's pretty little material to go by, but judging from consensus I agree with either "Sister" or a higher rank being used. It may be of note that I have never seen the full title of sub-ranks (e.g. "Canoness Commander") employed in any conversation throughout the studio material. This may be because each of these sub-ranks is still a Canoness and head of a convent; you won't have two. The additional titles only begin to play a role as soon as you have multiple Canonesses being present at the same site, at which point it becomes a question of seniority as represented by "who has the bigger convent".
Come to think of it, I cannot even remember the full sub-rank being used in letters (or maybe I've just forgotten). It's simply a non-issue unless you have several convents and there's a risk of confusion regarding leadership. For example, there were 700 Sisters of the Order of the Argent Shroud at Armageddon 3, which would make their leader at least a Canoness Commander if not Preceptor, yet Carmina simply signed her missives as "Canoness" because she was the only Canoness of the Argent Shroud around, eliminating any chance at mistaking her.
I also think it possible that the rank of Canoness, regardless of sub-type, is unique to each Order - meaning that any Order generally has only a single Canoness, but the sub-rank helps establishing how large it is and as such establishes a hierarchy between the leaders of multiple Orders. After all, each Order appears to have only a single permanent convent, and I do not think it likely that Canonesses get promoted and demoted based purely on individual missions, even if they take years to complete.
I assume another potential in-universe reason for the establishment of sub-ranks was to ensure that some faraway Palatine doesn't just suddenly "ursurp" the same level of authority as a veteran Canoness of the Major Orders just because her extended-duration Mission gets permanently made a semi-independent Minor Order. Due to the distance between Sororitas deployments, such details may not be important most of the time, but can indeed become vital if multiple Orders Militant gather for some big campaign, or when the Canonesses go about voting for a new Prioress or Abbess. Even if the vote of a Canoness Commander officially counts as much as that of a Canoness Preceptor, the latter's full title (and as such the reputation that comes with leading a bigger Order) may provide her with more influence, possibly enabling her to sway the opinions and thus votes of "lesser" Canonesses. Since the various Minor Orders all descend from one of the Major Orders and are, in theory at least, expected to follow its lead, this establishes a firm hierarchy between the various commanders of the Sisterhood.
Other general forms of address for high-ranking Sisters include "Lady", "Mylady" or "Mistress", though the last one is only used by other Sisters and the former is not a rank but simply a honorific - small but important difference.
Personally, I don't believe in the "Sister-Canoness" or "Sister-Palatine" as if it were regarded as officially proper usage within the setting, but I could think that some Marine Chapters do this either way simply because it conforms to their own system.
Side question: is it really common to call a Marine Captain "Brother-Captain" when you're not an actual Battle Brother? I would assume such could result out of prolonged service at each other's side as a form of respect to a mutual relation, but by default?)
Then again, it doesn't actually sound "unfitting" in this case, especially given the relationship between both the Astartes and the Sororitas, not to mention the Sons/Daughters schpiel Phototoxin mentioned...
Ben Counter's Daemonblood had this line:
"Brother Marine," she called to Sergeant Castus, her voice small and quiet when usually it was strong and inspiring. "Close your mind to it. Look away!" Castus did not seem to notice her.
Granted, it's just a novel, and as such depends only on this one author's personal opinion, yet in the context it just sounds ... right, so personally I guess I would roll with it.
Of course the entirety of this post is just one interpretation.

You are correct. While Sisters of Battle have contempt for Space Marines (by virtue of their ab-human nature and especially their Librarians/psykers) they will refer to the various chapters as 'Brother' or their rank (e.g., Sergeant, Brother-Captain, etc.).
The opposite is true for Space Marines. SoBs are generally referred to as 'Sister' —unless 'Sister-superior' or 'Cannoness' is more appropriate— although with familiarity and equality in rank a Cannoness may refer to a Captain as 'Brother' and vice-versa.
Different Chapters may have slightly different protocol (some have more or less contempt for mere mortals), however, so I'm sure there's some variety across the galaxy.

Agreeing with Lynata, I think 'sister' and 'lady' are pretty much the only titles that can be guaranteed as being appropriate.
I'd imagine the Guard use M'Lady and Lady more commonly than 'sister' as it would imply they were on an equal standing.

Perhaps I miscommunicated. Sisters wouldn't call Grey Knights anything... they don't know about them, right? Unless I have my fluff wrong I thought they were secret to all but Inquisitors and a few lucky marines that don't get mindscrubbed.
Sisters players however have lots of reasons to be angry at Grey Knights (and by extension the writer of the last Codex) and call them horrible names . I don't think Kroot or myself were implying anything other than that. I may be wrong. As a long time Sororitas player (since the first box of them was released) believe me when I say I take them pretty seriously.

Kinda like an enlisted Guardsman addressing a Marine as "M'Lord" and "Lord" ...
Now that you say it, that is a nice synergy. Fits the (admittedly simplified) theme of "Sisters = Female Marines", too.

There are instances in both IG and SoB novels where Guardsmen toy with rumors about Sisters being as much warriors as they are concubines.
Just because they are strong, devout, martial figures does not make them easily corruptible into sexual fantasy (on the contrary...), especially when considering the psychological issues the average plank faces on the battlefield of the 40th millennium.
There's precious little for Guardsman Snuffy to hope and dream about in his foxhole before the Tyranid hordes flense the flesh from his bones. Would you begrudge him that?

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying.
