Mayor Bloomberg pushing NYC hospitals to hide baby formula so more new moms will breast-feed

The nanny state is going after moms.
Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.
Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.
Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.
While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.
“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”
Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.
With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.
“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”
Lisa Paladino, of Staten Island University Hospital, said: “The key to getting more moms to breast-feed is making the formula less accessible. This way, the RN has to sign out the formula like any other medication. The nurse’s aide can’t just go grab another bottle.”
Some of the hospitals already operate under the formula lockdown.
“New York City is definitely ahead of the curve,” said Eileen DiFrisco, of NYU Langone Medical Center, where the breast-feeding rate has surged from 39 to 68 percent under the program.
Breast-feeding in the first weeks gives a baby a critical healthy start, many medical experts say. It helps the digestive system develop and protects the baby with the mother’s immunities. Nursing also helps the mother recover from childbirth.
But not everyone is convinced.
“They make formula for a reason, and the FDA makes sure it’s safe,” said Roxanne Schmidt, whose 14-month-old twins were fed with formula from birth. “Locking it up is just wrong.”

Not so much ban as lose consistently the application for the proper permit, everytime it's submitted. And this is nothing new. Cities have made decisions concerning permitting based on moral stances since forever. Except maybe here in Montreal, where 5 brothels advertise openly less than 10 minutes of walk away from my house...

Its going off topic but you asked and it's your thread so I'll put it in spoiler tags.
Spoiler:
It’s by a guy named Will Martinez as far as I know. He created it for a Lovecraft creature contest of some kind a couple years ago.
There used to be a very nice gallery full of all the entries but unfortunately I believe the page has been taken down.
I think it's one of the deep ones decribed in the H.P. Lovecraft short story "Shadow over Innsmouth," though I remember it being described (on the now nonexistant gallery page) as a ghast.

Oh ok, thats not half as scary as my mother in law.
To the topic, whats the point of the nanny state in this area? I'm down with breastfeeding, but why does Big Nanny care?

Hasn't breast feeding been proven to cut down on mental problems that "would" develope later on in life?

I agree with a ban of baby-formula-company swag bags. But not for formula/breast milk reasons.
I think companies should not get free advertisement in hospitals. I know many hospitals are cracking down on swag bags from drug companies, no pens and fancy dinners from the drug reps to influence the person writing the scripts. I agree with banning the baby-formula bags for that reason.

Formula is to breast milk what chicken nuggets are to free range organic chicken.
Just because the chicken nuggets are convenient, doesn't mean you should raise your kids on them.
They aren’t banning it or snatching it from the hand of weak feeble mothers. They are merely regulating it and taking the time to educate mothers on the benefits of breast feeding. Breast milk happens to be fething awesome for babies (shocker!) . It straight up contains the mother IgG antibodies so if a baby is breast fed it has immunity to all the stuff that mom does. Not to mention that fact that one doesn't have to worry when a sensationalistic media site posts a scare story about tainted baby formula.
But by far the best reason a mother should breat feed is... that it makes her knockers larger
Well, SOme mothers just cant breast feed, for some, emotional problems can cause well, problems.
But im conflicted, I think this is just kinda stupid, give them a lecture for not wanting to breastfeed their crotch-deamons(maybe they physically cant, like they got a boob-job) But i was bottle feed and look how i turned out.
But, Really i dont care how you feed you deamon spawn, just feed them, i dont want t hear them.

I thought the problem in the US is that maternity rights are quite poor and women often go back to work quite soon after birth compared to the UK where you can have many months off. Bottle feeding is widely encouraged and the only option for many as a result.

Formula milk is a poor substitute for breast milk, babies can't even digest it properly. Some women need to bottlefeed but most (by a wide margin) don't.
Breastfeeding is also far cheaper (it is in fact free) and much more convenient. My wife was adamant that she would only breastfeed my son for the first 6 months (as there is no sound evidence for breastfeeding past this period and she didn't like the concept) yet in the end she breastfed for 15.
Basically this thread is taking issue which measures that are being taken to improve the health and well being of infants? Surely thats a new low.
Its not as if mothers are being forced to breastfeed

Mothers aren't being forced to breastfeed, they're being given information.
No nannying involved, just frazzled trying to post something nonsensical again.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

If Big Nanny is supposed to care about the health of babies, she should care about their health.
