So I've been looking at infinity for awhile now, as much as I enjoy 40k a squad sized tactical game has a certain appeal to it. Been going over the armies and the fluff and keep coming back to Ariadna, it's scots in space, what's not to love about that? But I have some questions, mostly about what and how to start with, and how Infinity handles proxies. For example I was thinking of using these: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/467809.page as Line Kazahks or something similar because I enjoy their looks. I was thinking about buying them any way, but if I can use them for a game too all the better right?
I'm also curious about how popular Infinity is and how wide spread it is or isn't. I haven't really seen any matches of Infinity being played at the FLGS, but with my current work set up, I haven't exactly been in very often either.

Officially, only the actual minis are meant to be used in a sanctioned tournament.
Outside of this, if it looks reasonably like it could be the model, it works (you will get dicks in this game like any other, though. Just as there are those who maintain you can't play 40k with non-40k figures, there are some infinity players who believe the same for their game).
I have an entire proxied ariadna army made from older modern and near future troops I picked up back in the early 90s. The lightly armoured ones are LI, the ones with more armour are MI and the heavy armoured guys are HI.
The same for weapons. Some have assault rifles (rifles) - and a couple have attached grenade launchers, some have sniper rifles, some have HMGs or Missile launchers.
I don't use it in a tournament, but in a club setting, to show off how the rules work, or as a demo force, they work fine.

Those models are also 32mm yes? which makes them 4mm bigger than the rest of infinity (but i have heard/read that some of the '28mm' models are actually bigger than this so YMMV).
Otherwise, i think chromedog has hit the nail on the head.

I instantly thought about Metrós when I saw those models, they are very nice (Metrós being the French line infantry).
As for how widespread it is hard to say. It all depends on where you live I suppose. Here we are only three players locally and it's been hard to convince others to stray from 40k.

The Statuesque guys actually did a helpful size comparison
L-R Infinity Ghulam, Statuesque, Mantic Corporation, Statuesque, Games Workshop Imperial Guard
Seems pretty close on to me but I've never been a good judge of that sort of thing.

See, i knew the whole '28mm' thing was a lie...
Does seem to fit in really well. Agree with Hindenburg, instantly made me think of Metros as well.

The model on the right looks like it'd do a proper scout as well on the left could probably work as well, SAS maybe. I think the major issue is these girls can supplement, not replace a starter set. I wouldn't have the medium/heavy infantry or special weapons for my squad.

Agreed.
yeah, you will need the force to be 'fleshed out' in terms of MI and HI, but for LI these girls look great!

Yeah so what I'm thinking is get the Ariadna Starter pack that comes with the Kazaks, a pack of these girls, the "scout" model and "SAS" model for funzies if not table top use and add to that as a core from there.
Any one have suggestions about what or how to build a solid tac unit for Ariadna?
Also looking for suggestions on paint, gonna have to start doing hair and stuff which is a new one for me.

Also because the infinity website isn't being clear exactly. Do the standard troopers, say a box of Metros, Caladonian Volunteers or Line Kazaks come with special weapons options? Is that even a thing? Which special weapons are even useful?
Is there a version of Codexes which explain and detail the units and I'm just really sucking at finding it?

Don't play Ariadna myself, so can't say much on that part. Except, Tankhunters with either HMG or Autocannon, make me cry.
The Miniatures part next to News, has pic with the weapons name that there holding. Yes, it would be nice if they told you in the online store too. Box set have group pic with the unit name and weapon above there heads, while the single one have the weapon type in a box on the bottom.
Special Weapons are great but cost SWC, you can spend 1 SWC on special weapon/equipment per 50pts of the total point for the game. So if you play a 150pts game you can spend 3 SWC, just remember it cost SWC for you Lt. just like for a special weapon.
The rules and army list are online in the Infinity site Download part. The army list is in two downloads just like the rules.

As Noir said, the weapons are detailed in the pictures on the store. The blue box is what you are looking for.
Do you mean in the standard box, so you would have to buy the special weapons seperately? Or just the option to use them? Yes they can, the differing options for troops are in the rules, the books, or even the army List Builder (VERY useful).
In regards to an army list, use the list builder, copy and paste the code over here and im sure we (well, not me, but someone...) can give you some advice. There doesnt tend to be as much emphasis put onto lists so much as how you use them in Infinity (hence the ongoing joke over on the Infinity Forums of 'It's not your list, its YOU'), so pretty much anything you care to throw together could end up working for you (so long as its legal).

Also, NOT all Lt options cost you SWC.
Quite a few cost 0 SWC and a few ADD SWC (in addition to them not costing any - but they are an obvious Lt) to what you would have (in a 150pt game, with a Lt that grants +1SWC, you get 4 SWC to play with instead of 3).

Will you be using the statuesque minis for Line Kazaks or the official models ? (If using official models, you'll have 2 of the same model so I would find an other good looking unit to fill up the points)

Von, Yes I'll be going for the Statuesque minis to fill my riflewomen slots. Then pick up a Missile Launcher line Kazak blister to round them out for the special weapon.
I looked at the Meorvingians, they definitely have some cool units to work with, Paracommandos and some of the named characters really stood out.

I'm probably just going to be cheap and paint them in such a manner they wouldn't look out of place with either force ^^; not like the weapons vary much with Aridana and it'll give me a solid light infantry base for playing out to the Merovingian sectoral or whatever else... cept Caledonians, pants wearing heathens can't join a proper Scottish regiment! I admit to really liking the Statuesque minis even when compared to Corvus Belli's stuff, which is impressive cause CB makes an incredible miniature.
SAS counts as:
Scout counts as:
On a side note I'm now aiming to use exclusively female troops it seems XD
So I figure fill out the list above, then start expanding towards something like say this:
eNozNlY1VDNQM6zBJM3BpCWYNFUzBpLGYNIUJAIAW6gMWA==
which would give me two pretty flexible forces to play separately and if I'm catching on right wouldn't do too terrible together in a large 400 point match (which I understand to be rare)
Edit: might just drop the Kazak Doc entirely, both lists can use the 112 Emergency Services medic.

In the first list, i wouldnt have my Lt so far away form the rest of my forces (assuming you are using the scout to push up on the enemy or hold a flank or something) but that might just be me. Although, veeeeeery sneaky using the fake Tankhunter Lt to screen the scout...i like it
