I was sat chatting to a guy who used to play WH40k and he asked me what armies were around now, so i reeled off the list and he said "hmm, i thought there would be more by now".

Got me thinking, GW have most of the generic bases covered and if they were to go looking for a new race, what would they do....

I've spent ages thinking about a niche they haven't yet thought of.

My only answer was something along the lines of Predators. A large humanoid(ish) shaped alien, planet of hunters. Kind of like elite Orks, smaller numbers in the armies with more advanced tech.

Any other ideas?

The Yautja would be good for a game of Necromunda. A massive battlefield that a standard game of 40K would not suit them well, as they're solitary/small group hunters, not soldiers. Yes, you could make up a race that is Predators... but with tanks and artillery, but, then, what really separates them from the Tyranid or the Orks, their crab-faces?

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Lol, I'm sure this is also what the conversation sounds like at Nottingham. And why new races are almost non-existent.

Adeptus Mechanicus is my vote. Oh also the great Matius Wardius race, all characters have killed either A: Some great leader for another faction, or B: a hive fleet, singlehanded.

I think if they were going to make a new race they have to do a few things.

-First is see what niche in 40k is not filled. examples: orks=horde/melee; tau=fragile/long range shooty; space marines= space marines

-Then they can do what they have done for a few races and do what I like to call, futurize them. example: Elves=Eldar; Orcs=Orks.

I don't know how they would do it fluff and story wise but i think they could possibly do it for, Lizardmen lots of plasma; skaven= poison/ horde

My favorite idea Undead, just bring them back and have them be like hordey, but low tech alot of melee.

Or just make up a totally new idea and race and sya whatever they like.

I'd love to see squats. There was a comic running about a Space Wolves Marine and a Sister of Battle that was pretty good, called "Space Wolf and Sister" I think, that had Squats in it. I think fluff wise they were exterminated some centuries ago, but they could easily have gone into hiding.

Somewhere between Space Marines and Tau in armor usage, using tiny powered mechs to fight in, good use of walkers, artillery teams, engineers, rune priests...could be a real cool codex!

Maybe a rouge trader/xenos army could work fluff wise and can be made to fit a lot of niches?

^^ that. Also maybe an army based upon the Ghoul Stars or Halo Stars.
I think the best army personally would be an army that is a Republic of man, alien and machine in which there is a coalition.

I had an idea for a race a while back. Please bear with me as it was a concept for "Rifts" and was started night as a joke after watching a marathon of old 70's/80's cartoons.

The idea is for a race of Centigers(Like Centaurs but Human - tiger mix instead of Human - Equine)

They are intelligent hyper-efficient predators that make use of advance weapons tech. They have incredible strength, speed, vision and cc abilities.
Their only real drawback is that they fight only in small groups(Prides?) and don't really use vehicles except to move heavy stuff.(Think no transports and only artillery for heavy support.)

Physically:
Well to heavily muscled. Taller than a Guardsman when on four legs with upper body upright, As tall as the SW wolves that they can take.

Stats:
Would be same as if not slightly better than Gene-stealers(Better save, ballistic skill of 4 and same base attacks as a Broodlord but everything else the same as genestealers)

Equipment:
Flak or carapace armor
Eye targeter scope
Sniper rifles as standard troop gun
No artificial cc weapons that are held but do have bionic enhancements available(Real Lightening Claws anyone?)

Abilities:
Rending Claws(Natural)
Jungle Fighters(Stealth)
Hunters(Infiltrate/outflank)

There is more.

@Games Workshop-Yes, this is my concept that I have posted on an open forum but I still retain the intellectual rights due to the race being designed for another system. So no using, borrowing or stealing this concept without my permission / written agreement that includes proper renumeration.
(I had to put this in because GW's IP policy is hypocracy at its finest. "No you can't use our idea that we stole from someone else". )/rant

Another marine army.
Note that I have made this up, so GW, if you do a new marine army/new codex for a chapter, I will sue you.

*sigh*

Sarcasm to poke fun at sarcasm? Does this mean that if I tell dead baby jokes, you are going to tell dead SM baby jokes?

If this is a case where you missed that my Intellectual property claim was a sarcastic rant on GW's behavior, I can put a "SARCASM" sign up to help clarify things for you.

Thyrrus is a cool looking army. They are like light up squid people that spam plasma weapons and try to make their battles look showy not giving a crap if tons of their guys die or they lose. I like that their moral code makes absolutely no sense from a human perspective. Why would you throw your life away just trying to make a battle look cool?

Fairly certain there is also a minor race of shapeshifters somewhere that "have a terrifying battle form."

id like to see an elite close combat oriented technological alien army that isnt fast, just tough.

basically i want alien blood angels. (yea they are fast, but not DE fast) all the aliens we have are either super fragile or non-elite (nids/orks) I want to see 3+ saves, T4 on aliens that arnt just stand back and shoot, but get in mid/close range to bring their firepower and close combat to bear. prefferably expensive on points to give the army a smaller, elite feel.

That's what i was thinking :(

I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

The Umbra.

Much like the older necron "green bars" this army could represented with shiney marbles.

Then they could make the plasic "warp stuff" that swirls around them and that would be how the model says "levitating".

The entire range could be on MC bases with the big bosses on flying creature bases.

Though... you could make the army at home with marbles, green stuff and wire.

I haven't watched Power Thirst in so long. Thank.

As for new army if they're going to do a new army (DON'T! UPDATE THE OUTDATED STUFF FIRST) then I like the idea of a expensive, specialist melee army. Whatever it is, definitely Xenos.
