Hi, I know a couple of people that want to collect WH 40k but don't have the money for a big or expensive army so what do you think the cheapest army is?
(Btw they don't mind what the army is, they just what to play)
Thanks
|
I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive. Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

I woudl think the cheapest army (to buy) woudl be somethgin like Grey KJnights. They are an elite high points army so you would hit 1500 points with a pretty small number of models.
but it also depends on how you kit out your army. A Necron Overlord for example can range from 90 points all the up to 350+. and for the cost of the CCB+Lord kit you suddenly have 1/5th of a 1500 point army for, what £25?

GKs, least model count per point that get used to good effect in friendly games. Draigo $22, Coteaz $20, 2 packs of terminators $100, 2 dreadnoughts $84 dollars.

the cheapest army i think was the movie marines army list that was in a WD. it was made as a joke but some people like it.
it was a squad of 5-10 marines the list that was made up by one guy was 1500pts and only had 6 marines.

any army that is space marine oriented is going to be the cheapest comparatively. If you want absolute cheapest, maybe it would be grey knights. Although you can collect a mass amount of orcs / tyranids on ebay and then add a few heavy's, elite's and HQ's to the mix and it would still be relatively cheap.

Honestly, if you're creative and crafty, go Orks.
You can pick up a pack of 20 slugga boyz from the AoBR set (the starter) for $20 + shipping (I think that's about 16 GBP).
Then, you can scratch build the vehicles.

While I am of the opinion that the best answer to this question is "it depends," I voted Daemons.
With Daemons, your heavies are 200ish points each (at around $30 each, IIRC), and your troops are 14-17 points each. You can also take 300+ point HQs that aren't outrageously overpriced (just a bit).
There are other options:
GK: either Draigowing or true Grey Knights are elite enough to keep the model count down. Coteaz gets expensive pretty quick.
DA: Deathwing/Ravenwing can also be quite reasonably priced.

Although I voted for GK, Necrons could possibly be cheap although most of their units don't get many upgrades. For example, for $36.25 you get 12 warriors and 3 scarabs.. oh wait I just realized that the price is higher than it used to be. Damn.

2nd hand bought here in NZ, Space Marines would be. $20NZ for 10 marines on our form of Ebay as opposed to $73 in the shops.
I'd say a Deathwing/Ravenwing/Draigowing or Daemons would be cheapest though.

I just started playing less thne 6 months ago, and my first purchases were Terminator pack x3, and Power armor pack x6. Bought Crowe and Draigo built but not painted, and 3 rhinos. I jumped in heavy. But my first post in the thread is probably what they should buy first best value for least money. Besides what self respecting GK player doesn't have his cornerstone Paladin/Draigo squad to just make people sour with? Well the bad players anyway, everyone needs a scapegoat for being terrible at this game.

Well the dead cheapest army is Draigo and two boxes of GreyKnight Terminators as Paladins. But Probably 3-4 Grey Knight Strike Squad boxes, Crowe, and then flavor with a dash of Terminators and Dreadnoughts. Automatically Appended Next Post: Although on second thought buying Two Battleboxes for Space Wolves actually gives you a decent army. All you really need after that is either more Drop Pods or a Rhino or two.

Yeah, it's GK, of course. You can make a 1,000 point draigowing army for $122.25, and that's assuming that you're buying the most expensive way possible - direct from GW.
If you go to an FLGS that offers a discount (most do), or rock a little ebay action, it would be pretty easy to do it for less.
Although most of the newer codices now give you a "cheap" option. BA has Mephiston+DC, SW has loganwing, GK has draigowing (amongst several cheap options), and, as mentioned, it's even possible to do necron for reasonably cheaply.
My guess is that this is a trend on purpose. We're probably going to see a few extremely-low-model-count options show up in the new CSM codex.

Well with all of the gubbins that you get in a SW battleforce you can make any of your HQs out of just the regular marines you get in it. My brother has 9 different HQ selections and the only one that he actually bought seperately was Logan. Everything else was just made from the Space Wolves kits. And even more awesomely you can take 4 HQs with a space wolves army. Also, Space Wolves perform really well in low point cost games in comparison to most armies.
My advice would be to buy a Space Wolves Battleforce from a discount retailer and then buy one box of Space Wolves Marines and a box of Thunderwolf Cavalry. You'll get a decent army with some very powerful characters and the second best infantry in the game.
