I most recently picked up a Assault on Black Reach starter kit (always thought GW was cool looking, but took my stepson up to the local store and walked out with a LOTR set for him and the 40k for myself.) While i was browsing the store i noticed the Space Wolves and knew right then and there that was the army i was interested in building. But for the sake of getting a handle on the game i picked up the ASOBR. My question would be i suppose, could i start purchasing SW packs and add them to my existing army or would i be required to start from scratch? I really enjoy painting and building the miniatures (all my marines done! working on the orc's as we speak!) but i was just wondering! Thanks in advance guys!

You can add the the stuff on, it's perfectly acceptable especially since SW are still marines and as long as you follow What You See Is What You Get (as in, your models are modeled as to have the appropriate stuff/wargear/whatev)

Although it would look a tad strange, it would still make sense as long as you had some sort of identification for the AoBR marines as part of the SW. Of course, you could just use the 6th ed ally rules to do that, but that would mean making another wallet emptier. I assume you're playing 5th ed because of AoBR (comes with all of the required stuff ) but 6th ed could make it easier to field both the SW and AoBR marines. Go for just adding on as you go, it won't look strange at all.
Back in the day normal Space Wolf marines were simply grey-painted Space Marine figures with SW shoulder insignia, and even after they started getting their own troopers, they were just marines with wolf tail talismans on them, mostly. It was the personality figures that added the heavy wolf-designs to set them apart that are common on SW today.
You can add some of the details that come with Space Wolf plastics to the AoBr marines and terminators.

^ Your welcome. If you didn't paint the AoBR guys yet, you could use the Space Wolf main small set for extra parts and details. Aegis has good info.

I used AOBR to kick start my SW army as well. All it requires is a single Wolf Pack box and you will have all the extra bits you need to make the AOBR stuff look wolfy.
I took it one step further and cut out all the heads from the termis and marines and used extra heads from the box. I also shaved off the arrow from the shoulder pads of the marines. Throw on a few extra wolf skulls and tail do-dads and they blend right in once you mix them into the ranks of the normal SW marines you made from the pack box.

The only real limit to your models is your imagination, unless you want to enter tournaments in which case you will need to follow their rules, at the end of the day you could have pink space wolves with monkey tails if you so wished.
Hope you enjoy the hobby

A few suggestions on your next purchases...
Pick up a Rune Preist for an HQ (the AoBR captain doesn't fit the look of SW at all).
Grab some SW Wolf Guard (terminators) and use those parts to make a full 10 man termie unit with plenty of options and wolfy bits.
From that point on you'll probly want to pick up a tank or 2 in the future and some extra troops.
Oh yeah... Long Fangs. Buy Longfangs.
Edit:
Did you already paint the AoBR terminators? If that's the case ignore my idea on the 10 man unit... Unless you feel like repainting them.

I did in fact paint all the marines in my AoBR set, but it's not a big deal i found the terminators in there one of the easiest to paint personally. But thanks for the info!!! lll post some pic's up in about a hour or so im about to leave work! Automatically Appended Next Post:

Hi man, if you are asking will the character be able to lead your army and fill the minimum HQ slot and make the army legal, then yes it will, however most special characters are expensive points wise, and are normally better in larger armies/games so I would recommend getting just a normal HQ.
Do you have the space wolf codex?

OK, I would recommend just buying that and reading a little in the store if you can and try to decide what you want, if unsure you could see if anyone there might know or even some staff members could help you out.

Another thing I might suggest is that even though you have already painted the marines from the Starter, you could still use them as "Space Wolves", if you like their rules, as long as you aren't hung up on them being actual by- the- book Space Wolves in color.
It looks like you haven't added any Ultramarines iconography. You could mix and match these marines and future Space Wolf purchases that you could paint blue as well. Then simply use the Space Wolf codex to field a feral and savage chapter that uses blue as their main color. Add a cool insignia for their Chapter Emblem to make them a bit different visually than Ultramarines, and you have something that's unique to you!
It's perfectly legal, and everything that's in the AoBR set is useable as a model in the Space Wolf codex, just in a slightly different form than a standard chapter. Right now you would have a "Wolf Lord", a Venerable dreadnought, some "Grey Slayers", and the terminators could be used as Wolf Guard in Termi armor.

That would be an easy conversion as i could just replace the yellow i currently have painted on them with black! By chance is the arrow on the SM shoulder's a Ultramarine logo, or just a stock marine insignia?

They only existed for a short while. Their gene seed was, for some inexplicable reason, absurdly unstable.
