hey dudes and dudettes

this is a small painting diary to document my efforts in repainting a commissioned oldskool warhammer quest boardgame

The models are quite cartoony by modern standards so im trying to be fairly realistic and atmospheric with my painting choices to balance that out somewhat

Im relatively happy with the bat and the spider but in future I think Ill have to try making each one vary in hue slightly(like have a few purpley spiders, a few blue ones etc.). The orcs are ok I reckon, im happy with the one with the shiteatinggrin thats holding the sword but i get the feeling theres too much black and brown across all the greenskins. So I was thinking maybe if all the different units had another seperate random colour added it would break them up a bit for the eye? like red on the sword orcs, purple on the nightgobs, blue on the arrerboys etc..

As an owner of every WFQ set GW produced... I SAY THIS:

Great work, and subscribed.

cheers dude!

I was thinking a few weapon swaps might be good, and maybe repinning the bats at different heights would work too?

I painted some more spiders and a second batch of orcs and gobs, and a second doorway. I think the spiders are my favourite models in the quest, theyre so cute. So far the doorways are the most time consuming...I know theyre big but still, i wasnt expecting them to be that laborious

I have found that the doorways benefit from a "base, wash, drybrush" combo. Fast and easy, like my Mom.

...

Wait.

heres the first minotaur, I didnt really know what colour to paint him so I went with an indecisive brown. I think I might try doing a spotty one next, or maybe like a black angus?

I got another package in the mail this morning full of strange archaic models, have been trying to assemble a stupid elaborate chair for a skeleton all morning

i painted another unruly rabble today

the orc shaman was fun to paint, same with the orcs with sheilds actually, warhammer quest models are pretty characterful little mans

(the rats and spiders are still WIP)

In regards to your minotaurs, Greyman or Australian Braford would look pretty cool I reckon, and distinctly different from your first

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

This looks really nice

Have you thought about remaking the board/tiles using Hirst Arts moulds?

They look really good. Loving the softness of the colours and smoothness of the highlights. This set is really being brought to life! They will be tough baddies to overcome especially with a Contemptor dreadnought as back up.

I don't know what sort of eternal wellspring they draw from, but it's clear that the draugr carry only the barest whisper of life in them, and it rekindles nightly while resting in its niche. I now believe that the grotesque forms that we see in the barrow were, in fact, buried fully as men and women, and only over the thousands of years that have passed withered into the wretched things we know.

Your painting style is awesome. It's like muted, but detailed and colourful at the same time. I'm loving this.

That Chaos Knight chap has to be my favourite so far.

cheers man, im glad you like the way im painting them, its taken me a long time to get to a point of satisfaction with my style - it was always a hard thing trying to balance results with overall painting time. I really hate spending more than a day on a model/unit/project so I try to paint as fast as I possibly can and have just gradually adapted to that approach I guess

ramble ramble ramble

I havent painted an empire guy before, so I found this guy kind of challenging.. I dont really wanna talk about it

Yes. Yesssssss

I love WHQ so much, I absolutely have to revitalize my own set after seeing this. Been meaning to do it for years.

I've no idea how you're painting these minis so fast, each one of those orcs would take me half a week. Looking forward to seeing more!

Did you know? The Reach belongs to the Forsworn.

Look, I havent played warhammer quest before, Ive only played hero quest, so I didnt know the knight was supposed to come with a sheild. Not to worry though because im going to make him one out of plasticard because its super easy.

I painted another minotaur, its slightly lighter colour than the other one. You cant really tell in the pic but I was trying to make it human skin tone on the feet, hands and nose and greyish cowtone on the rest

ahh yeah, pretty standard sheild, shouldnt be hard to replicate

I think these two might be the coolest warhammer quest models - mohawk squig and the hunchback. I really enjoyed painting these guys

I'm dying to see you paint the Wood Elf. i got my hands on the Wood Elf a looooooooong tiem ago, and promtly made him my army general for years. Such a unique looking model for the time (at least compared to the rest of the wood elf army.)
