A well known characture in the 40k universe but personally I dont know much of his origins. At some piont he earned himself a special trust with the Emperor especially given the fact that psykers were banned at Nikaea and he seems to have been given special dispensation to carry on. Also the new Audio book coming out next year depicts him sat on a throne with the numbers II and XI. Did Malcador have first hand involvement in the deletion of these two legions? For a 'Man' to hold so much power during a period of time dominated by Gene enhanced super humans he must have been something special.

I think I read somewhere (?) that he has served the Emperor while the Emp was doing the whole unification thing on Terra.

Seriously. I have not one shred of evidence for this, other than the fact that some wierd superhuman wandering around the earth for tens of thousands of years being all awesome and special would be noticed at some point prior to the Unification wars. Whereas "This old bloke" probably wouldn't, even if he does seem to have been hanging around for a long time.

During the whole Battle of Terra, the Emperor was busy powering the Golden Throne to try and close off a Warp Portal that had formed directly behind it after Magnus the Red caused the Emperor's Webway project to malfunction. The Sisters of Silence/Custodes were fighting Daemons and the like, it was a huge mess and Terra risked being overrun by Daemons just as Horus' armies arrived.
However when the Emperor left to go battle Horus on the Vengeful Spirit, somebody needed to stay behind and continue to remain on the Golden Throne to prevent the Daemons from coming through. Malcador volunteered, though he was the only psyker strong enough to do it. After a few hours of doing this Malcador succeeded in holding out until the Emperor's body (now crippled by Horus) arrived to be plugged back in. When someone attempted to move Malcador he simply disintegrated into dust. It's actually one of the more heroic tales of 40k.
I actually think Malcador was the truest to the Emperor's vision and had he not died would have made a better post-Heresy leader then Guilliman.

He's a normal human as far as we know, has been around before the Emperor left Terra on the Great Crusade, and is one of the most powerful psykers of his time, though not on the same level as the Emperor or Magnus the Red.

I agree that Fulgrim's fall has been really lame as have several other major events of 40K lore.
Part of me wonders if the creators and current stewards of GW are privately suprised at the following and that this whole thing has gone for as long as it has.
Kinda like how George Lucas has behaved when his Star Wars fans get too serious and irate about how he has handled things over the years.

So what the significence of the II and XI on this picture?
Its clear that from this we can see the Inquisition symbol in his right hand and the Imperial Eagle in his left. What of the writing on the steps leading up? and the mask? So much mystery around this guy and other than the well documented action during the siege on Terra there is very little known about him.

That's nearly it
When Dorn brings the Emperors body back to the Golden Throne, Malcador gives the Emperor the last of his power and he awakes. Malcador then turns to dust.
This giving power thing is one of the reason for the theory, also that where ever Malcador is, so is the Emperor to some extent. Monarchia, the Assassins Chambers, Nikaea one doesn't appear to be anywhere without the other.

The mask is from the Assassin order, which he runs.

I think he greatly improved the story of Fulgrim's fall in Angel Exterminatus, the other two I have to agree with though.

IIRC, Dorn and his bodyguards stormed their meeting chamber, taking the master assassins by surprise and into custody, exposed Malcador, and argued with Valdor. IIRC, the argument between Dorn and Valdor sounded a lot like what an argument between a puritan (Dorn) and a radical (Valdor). The argument was on the verge of turning into a fight (at least that's how I saw it) when the Emperor intervened and decided to place the assassins under Imperial governance as opposed to being Malcador's shadow. Although TBH, I would have preferred seeing Dorn take Valdor's head instead.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.
'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.' |

There's so much subtlety and personal tragedy in that story, it's one of my top 3 Heresy novels. I love it. It's just how a super-being's fall to Slaanesh should be.[/OT]

In The Outcast Dead didn't it allude to Malcador being a warlord that the Emperor had conquered during the Wars of Unification? I'm pretty sure it mentioned something about a really evil warlord who was a hardcore psyker that had gone over to the side of the Emperor, and in my head that meant Malcador.

I just read about this in one of the stories in "shadows of treachery". I don't remember what it said, and I have it as an E-book, so I couldn't be arsed to go back to check. But if anyone got the hardcopy version, I believe it's the story where Dorn keeps complaining that he's destroying the Imperial Palace. Edit: Either "The crimson Fist" or "The lightning tower" I believe.

In the older stuff, Malcador was suspected of being one of the Emperor's children...as in one of his progeny, not one of Fulgrim's lot.
However, the BL writers have screwed so many things up, that it is hard to tell which direction they are going in. At this rate, I would not be surprised that the Emperor is just a psychic projection, and that Malcador is the "Emperor". There is enough stuff to back up this claim, and it would explain a lot.
Of course, as an "old school" grandpa of this game, I would HATE it if the BL writers did something like this. But hey, why wouldn't they? It sure would be a surprise, which is all they seem to care about these days.
"We can't just have the Emperor fight Horus, because everyone already knows what happens."
"So, what should we do?"
"I know, let's make it so that Guilliman is secretly an international gangster, who is desperately in love with Lorgar, but can't reveal his feelings to the Emperor, because he is afraid that his daddy will not allow the relationship. So, he convinces his brothers to fight each other, pretending to be Malcador, and hopes to get his daddy into a desperate enough position, that he HAS to let Guilliman and Lorgar date! No one will see THAT coming!"
"Genius."
