So I was just curious, Do you ever name your characters? HQ characters or sergeants or other models of your army? I never do it because I am horrible at thinking of names but I was curious if anyone else does it. One of my friends has named not only his characters but his squads, Dreadnought and tanks.

My upper-level models have names. Things that stick around in my battle report narrations rather need them. I'll also occasionally throw around a name, but usually it won't stick with the model, but rather will be the name for a grenade launcher guy who looks like him this time, or something more abstract.

Tanks get names, though. Officially or otherwise, it's kind of mandatory in my opinion.

All the time. I have Morna Fateweaver, DE succubus. I have a Deathwing Dreadnaught named Dominatious, Morgan LeFlur, Sisters Cannoness. My names come to me from different sources, while readig fluff in books or from a famous persons name. I also had Zso Sahaal, Night lords character from the Lord of the Night book when I played CSM. It helps to make fluff for each one and when your opponent asks if your bringing "that one" and calls it by name, even tho it is your own creation, to know that they are feared. Hope this helps you on your endeavor.

I nicknamed by full decked out Shas'o the Big O and his ejection model Roger Smith.

Also named a sole surviving tau pathfinder that lasted the whole game from an onslaught of fire Steve. I don’t even know why I named him Steve.

I've not only given one of my Necron Scarabs a name, but I've developed a schizoid, paranoid, cowardly persona for him.

His name is Ted. Ted the Scarab. He wanders around the battlefield collecting nuts, bolts, scrap metal, shiney rocks and empty soda cans. He also tends to fall in love with empty soda cans, and will occasionally make sweet, sweet scarab love to them. My entire Necron army is pretty much a tool to go out and create scrap metal out of enemy tanks and armor for Ted to add to his precious 'treasure' hoard. The Necron Overlords think they're in charge, but it's all really just a scheme by Ted to get what he wants. Also, on his scarab base there are 4 scarab models, but the base only has 3 wounds. So each time the base dies, the other three scarabs are toast but Ted finds a cowardly, self-preserving way to escape. Often by playing dead, hiding under things, or dressing up in hilariously deceiving costumes and blending in with enemy armies or passing as some sort of civilian.

So... yeeeeah.

Sergeant of my circa 1994 Blood Claw squad is "Sgt. Apone".
Yes, he is also colored black.

Uh can one say black here - is it African American?

Black is fine. I'm of German ancestry, but I'm pretty sure no one refers to me as a German American. I'm white.

Krieg! What a hole...

MY CCS is #5601

All my Sargeants are 56-#of platoon-#of squad-1

For example, my Grenadiers one is 56-93-1 (nop platoon number since Grenadiers cannot be in a platoon) while my Engineer one is 56-32-1, once again, no Engineers platoon, so no platoon number.

I name all my characters, even some that aren't IC. for example take the Adamas: Shiro, Alfred, Vlad, Anastasia, and Michael. I've even written fluff for each of them in my blog. I seem to have an obsession with writing fluff for my armies.

Of corse I name all my characters! I also try to name all my squads & vehicles as well as it also helps give more of a narrative to my games.

It's really fun coming up with those Daemonic names, and even more fun trying t opronounce some of them!
For example, the Herald of Tzeentch I'm working on converting right now is named Tzaar'Quaysh...

Strangely, this post gives me hope for humanity.

I still name quite a few of my characters and write fluff for most of my armies; it probably stems from my RPG background. Though, tbh, most people don't give a flying crap about some poor lieutenant's family lineage when they slaughter your PCS in assault.

I've named a few, but due to some unfortunate planning, I have 3 named Andilus: my first plastic Space Marine mini, the model version of my Deathwatch character and my actual Wolf Lord (who has 3 different models to represent him ). Officially, I only call the Wolf Lord Andilus now so I need to come up with a new name for my first plastic dude...

I name most characters.

I've got Magistra Aeronwy, who leads my Chaos. Ligaya, one of my Aspiring Sorceresses. Mr. Shick, my Chaos Lord. Adept Wirer, my Warpsmith. Couple of others for Chaos. Atem Ssri and Amon Kell, my Necron Lords. See Mun, my Overlord. Mirai, my Canoness, and Imelda Ecrire, my other Canoness. Eve the Palatine. Sister Peri, who used to lead one of my flamer BSS until she got promoted to Dominion for seeing off a full squad of Wracks with nothing but a malfunctioning combi-flamer and a knife. All of my Repentia have names, which is ironic since they're the only line infantry that do.

Hehe! Yeah, I tend to put my little scarab base ontop of some terrain after the unit dies, to represent Ted's cowardly running away and hiding.

I once named all 72 Guardsmen (including command) in my 2000 point list. Then I lost the damn paper. ;(

As of now, I am trying to name a Tesla Shock Corps w/ Russian parody names.

Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.

I typically name all my ICs and a few of the vehicles, my Forge/MaulerFiend is named Francis because "get em Francis" (D&D 4th edition video reference, at work so I can't find the link).

Also with my Chaos army I have been naming squad leaders if they do particularly well, I'm currently trying to find a good name for my one cultist leader. He had killed 5 terminators with his squad and beat a DE Wych character in a challenge, which he then promptly turned into a DP, I was so proud of him.

I try to name all my minis - with a small-enough army where infantry is comparatively expensive (Marines, Sisters, ...), that's not hard to do. Especially thanks to websites such as this one.

I paint the name on the side of the base. For some time, I actually tried to keep stats on what mini was particularly successful or who died the most.

I blame my RPG background as well.

I try to name all my models. Champions, HQs, unique models usually get a title with their name. I have a stand in for each Chaos character with a tiny bit of fluff. Most of my lowly guys don't get names til they earn it.
