Subject: So a "friend" sold the codex I let him borrow...

Hey guys, four or five months ago I let a "friend" borrow my DA codex, since he was planning on starting them when Vengeance came out. Well, for the last two months I have been trying to get it back from him, and he's just pretty much been ignoring me. I've only seen him in person once since then, and he didn't have it with him.
Well, come to find out last night, he has apparently sold it to someone else he knows. I tried to call him numerous times after finding this out, left some voicemails, and messaged and text him quite a bit. After an hour or so, he finally replied to me on facebook, and was just being as immature as possible. He then proceeded to post this link:
http://i.imgur.com/GhvDe.jpg
to my facebook. Then, after I said I would go to the police (bluffing...), he messaged me and said that any cop would look at that picture and see that I "hit" him.
I know where he lives, so I'm debating on going to his house and confronting him... And normally I wouldn't resort to violence, but I can't in this situation because he's 17...
So would you guys have any advice on what I should do? I know the new book is coming out soon, but I would like to play a few games with the current one, and not have to buy another copy...

I would move on, but that's all I've done in the past and I want to stand up for myself this time. And thanks for the offer, but I'd feel bad about that and I'm determined to get this one back or compensatino for it...

Do you game at the same store? Involving some of the other members of your gaming community in an appropriate way might be effective.
Teenagers have a tremendous capacity to be amoral savages though so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Slay him. Not but seriously you should confront him, or find out who he sold it to and try to solve this out like a Tau with a little close interactions as possible. If doesn't give it back you or anything else talk to the group of guys he plays with or the club leader etc. and run a smear campaign to make sure he never gets another game ever again even if he was playing Yu-Gi-Oh. Kill him with words not your fists. (This is coming from another 17 year old, and the most important thing we have is our reputation and what others think of us)

We are winged salvation, but we are a terrible, final salvation, and our wings embrace the horizon with fire. We are the Blood Angels. To confront us is to die, and death is my remit, my reality, my unbounded domain. I have known death, and defeated it, claimed it as my own. To my cost, to my strength, death is my one gift to bestow, and I am nothing if not generous. |

He's 17 you say? Try to get him to admit in writing (facebook post (screenshot!), email, txt, whatever) that this happened, and have a word with his parents. That'll probably do it.
not sure if the police would at on something like that; down here (netherlands) for example, the mere act of selling someone else's property doesn't have to be a criminal offense (it's basically a matter of tort until you can prove something like malice) for example and even if it is, they might not put all too high a priority on a $20 book.
still, the threat can be powerful --- especially to someone's parents.

If he's 17 he's probably still with his parents. Explain their son is a thief, and either get the kid to give you the money back, or give you the book back. Explain to the parents you'd prefer to not make a big commotion about it, but if he continues to refuse to return your property, you WILL get the police involved.
If that doesn't work, you really can call the cops, and call his bluff in the process, but I wouldn't really bother with that unless it's absolutely necessary. Don't use 911 either, use your local number and just explain "hey, this kid stole my stuff and sold it. I've tried to get it back by asking nicely and peacefully, but its not working. Any way you guys can help?" Cops deal with this kind of thing all the time and it shouldn't be a big deal, just make sure you have a way to prove the book was yours and that the kid illegally sold it.
Also, that picture is obviously photoshopped. I don't think any court of law would take that seriously for a second. And that's implying this would even get taken to court.

Yeah I would say tell his parents. The cops won't care about a $20 book and they have much bigger things to deal with. But yeah telling the parents (because as of right now it sounds like they are bad enough...), and the rest of your gaming group/store. Once no one wants to play maybe he will sort his life out and stop being a piece of crap.

I wouldn't worry too much about that picture...it's about as poor a picture as I've ever seen. It's pretty much pathetic. I have to echo the group saying "approach the parents", but I'm not too sure the police will really bother too much over a $20 (now $30~) book that you probably don't have a receipt/proof of ownership anymore. You may just have to smear him at the game store for his actions (let your group know what he did) and make him a pariah. If he is more popular, it won't work. But if you're more well-liked, he quickly won't get a game in anymore and deserves the punishment and abuse.

Share with your game club, since you two are close enough to know each other a bit then smear him in the club. At this point he doesn't deserve the time of day and by undermining him he gets what he deserves.

If you give a person $20 and never see them again - it was probably worth it.
Since the aging DA Codex is worth about $20 - $30 at this point, I think you can safely apply this rule.
Let it go. Life is too short.

Meh, cut your losses and don't worry about it. You might feel some sort of moral outrage that you got ripped off but in the long run it's not worth the effort. If you know anyone in his social circle let them know about his shadiness. Otherwise just enjoy the zen and the art of waiting for the new codex.
On a related note, me and several friends all bought ebay lots when we first started playing a few years ago. One friend gave another friend a cherry deal on a complete blood angels army. Our friend played a grand total of three times and then asked me to paint up some of his guys. Over the next six months his army is sitting on my shelf while he refuses to answer our calls. Suddenly smoking weed with his dad and sleeping with girls strung out on heroine is more fun then playing games (or hanging out, watching baseball, or even partying) with his friends. After six months of the dude being a total no show I dumped his entire army in Purple Power and repainted them. Dude shows up occasionally at parties but has never asked me about his models.
So basically, I'm probably the only guy on Dakka who will admit to stealing an entire army from a friend.

You are overreacting to this situation. Calm down and let it go. You're not going to get your book back, and a $30 book isn't worth the grief you're putting on yourself or the embarrassment you're going to feel later should you persist in acting this way now. Don't be that guy.

Confrontation, yelling, and fighting will get you exactly no where and in the end you won't feel any better.
If you really want the $ or the book, talk to his parents.
If you don't want to talk to the parents, then just cut him off and get a loaner from the fellow up above who offered you one.
Good Luck.

I'm going to go out on a long and say he's single. I had a similar situation with my brother stealing my Magic cards back in 1997/98. I had one deck that probably could have sold for a couple hundred bucks with a bunch of moxes and the infamous black lotus and juzam djinns. I think he got $50 for the whole lot and bought some weed. Since then, he's paid me back by turning his life around and doesn't smoke or do any other illegal substances (he got into more than pot). He's also paid me back by scooping up other armies for me from guys in the armed forces who decided to get out of war gaming

But seeing as the offending party is in highschool chances are the girlfriend would be as well... it would be werid I think.
I see no reason why you have to go to any great lengths to "get back" at this kid. You could call his parents up but I doubt you'll achieve much, imo you'll lose them when you start talking about a rulebook for plastic dudesmen.
I would just let it be known at the flgs where you play that this kid is no good and to give him the cold shoulder treatment. You'll most likely never get the $20 back, he already spent it on snacks, pop, or mtg booster packs.

Well the pic is an obvious threat of violence and with the way they treat cyber bullying now you might actually get somewhere just showing it to the cops. But as a guy who just went through stuff like that in high school by not giving a crap the best way would be to talk to his parents about it. Bring a print out of the pic and if they help you they help you if they don't move on. I had a "friend" before kind of like this and you will never get anywhere dealing with him directly so deal with his parents instead. Also is that person beating up the other guy suppose to be you or him. Because if it's suppose to be you he is far more immature then I thought and your only hope is to go to his parents.
