So, after a two year break I've decided to get back into 40k and I am currently loving it. However, I've decided to start an Imperial Guard army since I love the backround fluff for them. However, I do not like the Cadian models and can not stand the hideous Catachan models. Of the models available, Forge World is not on my plate, I like the Vostroyans and the Valhallans. So Dakka, of the two which would you go with?

Czars beat the red army every time. But tbh I like Vostroyans quite a bit, and their box comes with a HWT that is fairly easily made into an autocannon.

To be honest if the Valhallans were in plastic I would highly suggest that you go with them. However, as Nythryl said, Czars every time.

Nah, to be honest, sit down and take a good look at both of the models, look at them and wonder why you like them. The thing is that it's your army and you have to pain them all in the next couple of years. If you somehow dislike them, you are stuck with them. It's your army and your decision.

If you can't reach a decision, you could always take both. (Say the Vostroyans are veterans, while the Valhallans are normal infantry or something.)

Both are a pretty bad choice for a full army. With so few models available, unless you are an all-star converter, your force is going to end up looking rather bland and static.

The metal guard models make great for small allied forces though.

I also would vote for vostroyans. Valhallans are old models, and so, by contemporary standards, are pretty crummy. You can see knife marks that the sculptors made, and some of the faces aren't that great, and the detail is pretty low.

Meanwhile, the vostroyans look awesome. In every way. I only wish my guardsmen had those lasguns.

I mean, seriously, side by side, there's little question.

Plus, I'd also like to note that you can still buy vostroyans from GW, while you'll have to wait for tiny batches to become available on ebay in order to play valhallans. It could take years just to get access to the minis.

That said, GW vostroyans aren't much cheaper than forgeworld stuff...

The Vostroyans are far and away better than the Valahallans, and are some of the most '40K' models in the entire range.

What always sort of rubbed me the wrong way is the bit about how Vostroyans supposedly inherit their weapons from their ancestors.

How on Terra is this supposed to work, given that IG regiments get shipped all across the galaxy? Am I supposed to believe that they've got a mail ship cruising through the Warp just so that some lad can get daddy's rifle he dropped on some Emperor-forsaken battlefield?
Or is this supposed to apply solely to Vostroyan PDF units that just never get tithed by the Munitorum and thus remain on the planet until the gun's owner gets too old to remain in active service?

Isn't imperial equipment reclaimed after a battle? Its cheaper to just salvage a weapon instead of building a new one, I would think.
If so, then I could easily imagine the Vostroyans having some sort of arrangement with whoever takes care of these weapons.

Anyway, I would go with Vostroyan. They have furry hats!

I'm sure the gear is retrieved - it's tech, after all, and tech is valuable.
However, how it gets from the warzone back to Vostroya ... that's something I don't quite see happening. Not with requiring kilometer-long Warp-capable star cruisers being stuck in the Immaterium for months or years, just to deliver a bunch of used lasguns. With a travel time like that, I'm not sure they could afford the wait when raising new regiments.

Unless they send newly raised regiments to the exact same region where all their forefathers fought and play a game of "paper chase" with Imperial bureaucracy ("what did you say your father's name was, son? ... ah, I see ... no, I'm afraid his belongings were transferred to a different holding area seven years ago, when this depot came under attack by pirates") before even being able to transfer to a new warzone - but obviously that feels fairly thin as well. :/

I'll have to disagree with you to a degree on this. Yes, Valhallans are older models, and aren't as detailed as the Vostroyan models or similar recent figures. However, they don't need to be overly detailed: they're Guardsmen! The Vostroyans are gorgeous models, but they're also incredibly busy. There's all these different textures to paint on every single one and there's a lot going on with them. Valhallans are simple and elegant by comparison, and for their age they actually look superb. I'm holding the March, 1995 White Dwarf in my hands right now; the Valhallan debut is in this issue. The Valhallans, along with the other contemporary metal IG ranges blow absolutely everything else out of the water. The models still look good, and they paint up great. Some of the faces have real character to them, and I sincerely appreciate that they're not overburdened with extraneous detail.

I mean yeah, I painted up over 2000 points of them this year, so I'm fairly biased, but that's what I have to say on the matter.

If you go Valhallans, you could use Bolt Action's new soviet infantry to help get you some more bodies for cheap, if you're even halfway decent at converting.

You get 40 guys for roughly $46. Playing a horde infantry army, thats a STEAL.

Although to be honest, both are awesome. I wish GW had made plastic vostroyans, they're a beautiful army.

Other way around. They ship the new guardsmen to the lasguns, not the lasguns to the new guardsmen.

After all, if your father just died somewhere, odds are he was killed with a lot of others, which means that they need a bunch of new replacements. Eventually one of the relatives will survive at the end, and he gets to pass it on to his children.

If it's like mine, they've still got them left over from back when they were brand new. Heck, we even have a few Praetorians, and they're rare as all get out. I've found old metal cadians, catachans, vostroyans, steel legion, and the older commissars and officer figures as well.

I hope you realize not only how rare that is, but how lucky you are to have a store like that! If I'm lucky and patient, I can get my store to special GW direct stuff for me, but generally the only way to get metal Guard (or really any metal GW models anymore) is straight from GW or secondhand on eBay. There are three game stores around Boston that carry GW stuff. Two definitely have none of these, and the third has a strange selection of old stuff that's still on the shelves, which is the only reason they would have any metal Guard. I saw a few Steel Legion blisters and old Dark Eldar kits last time I was there.
