EDIT: As usual I've been side-tracked by other things and my plans have gone a little askew. I'll continue to try and update fairly regularly but for now this blog will just be a general record of what I'm painting, with no specific aims or goals (except for trying to gradually work through my pile of unpainted plastic). I do still plan to get an army done in the latter part of this year but I'm not going to stress about deadlines and I will probably be regularly distracted by any new releases!

Just a brief update. I spent a couple of hours yesterday prepping models - not my favourite job, but unfortunately necessary. I should get time to do some undercoating later today. I've also done a little more work on a couple of single minis.

Nurgle dude is still in the very early stages - I just wanted to get an idea of where I was going with colours:

Tzeentch champ - I'm really enjoying painting this guy:

All comments/criticisms welcome!

I've been rather busy today but managed to get in 30 mins of painting while my dinner cooked.

Here's how nurgle-man is looking now:

Sorry about the pictures - they were taken on my desk under a single lamp so aren't great - but I'd appreciate opinions on the skin. I've tried to get a balance between it looking suitably diseased and not being too bright but I'm not sure that I've succeeded. I may have to fiddle with it a little more, especially the pustules and sores. I need to crack on with this guy though - I still have 3/4 of the mini to paint!

Thanks. I appreciate the comment. It is a really nice sculpt - a lot of fun to paint.

Hello again, if anyone is reading. Unfortunately I've had a very busy/stressful week and have done very little painting but I'm aiming to squeeze in a few long-ish sessions over the next few days so hopefully I'll have something half-decent to show you when I next post here. I made a start on a sorcerer lord this weekend so thought I'd put up a progress shot - it's not looking great atm but I don't want to just put up a wall of text so here we go:

I'll try to get him finished up tomorrow. I've also made a start on the warshrine and some space marine scouts.

First finished minis:

As always, there are some bits I'm pleased with and some that I'm not, but it's all good practice. All comments/criticisms welcome!

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon painting up my first Forsaken. These guys look much better in the flesh then they do on the GW website (thankfully!). I like how individual each model has ended up and rather than paint them as a group (as I would normally with a unit) I'm planning on painting them one by one to keep that feel. First guy struck me as quite Nurgle-esque so I've gone with that:

He's almost done - just a couple of bits need some final touches. All c&c welcome.

The rest of the unit:

Hopefully I'll have them done by the end of the week. I've also been working a little on the warshrine, although atm progress is pretty slow. Next up is the slaughter brute/vortex beast - once I've decided which one I want to paint, that is! Leaning towards the vortex beast I think, but we shall see.

Just a quick update. I've got the basic skin colours done for the rest of the Forsaken:

They're looking a little crazier than I had anticipated but they are chaos guys after all and there is still a lot of work to do so I'm hoping they'll end up looking o.k.!

Your colour shading looks really subtle, I really like the blending on the forsaken armour and the spikes on the sorcerer,

nice work

Thanks for the comment. It's great to get some feedback.

The Forsaken are now done:

I'm fairly pleased with how they've turned out. I was worried for a while that they would end up looking too chaotic, but I think they do work as a unit - which is good!

My apologies if the second pic is huge - I had some issues when trying to re-size it!

Mutalith Vortex beast is now undercoated and ready to paint to I'll start on him tomorrow and I have a half-done Chaos Lord I want to get finished in the next couple of days as well.

Some very nice work there, peebs - are you using an airbrush for the basecoats, or is it all by hand?

Thanks. I bought my first airbrush just after Christmas and am finding it a really useful bit of kit. I'm currently just using it for undercoating (which I'm loving - it's not any quicker than a spray can but gives a perfect, even base for painting on top of) and a bit of base-coating. The vortex beast had a very dark purple base-coat done with it and the sorcerer a blue one. The other models are all done entirely by hand. I'm hoping to gradually do a bit more playing around with the airbrush (the red on the sorcerers horns was a very simple experiment) - but will mainly be using it to speed up the 'boring' bits! I've seen some fantastic work done with an airbrush but personally I do prefer the finished result of hand-painting and will be sticking with that for most of my models.

Any plans on getting the FW Chaos Frogs to go with the Sorceror, peeb?

Ak. Don't tempt me! I'm supposed to be reducing my pile of plastic, not expanding it! Not that I'm doing particularly well with that atm..

Nurgle Herald is now done. I took a quick W.I.P. shot about half-way through painting:

And finished:

Can't believe it's two weeks since I last put a post on here - not sure where the time has gone! I have managed to get a bit of painting in though! I really enjoyed painting the new nurgle herald so I picked up another, along with two of the new finecast models. I generally try to avoid the stuff but the casts weren't actually too bad this time, although I really can't understand why they don't just stick with the plastic. Anyway, on to the pictures.

Went for a slightly different skin tone for the second nurgle guy:

Slaanesh:

Tzeentch:

And Khorne:

Still need to sort the bases, but otherwise they are done. I've also finished one of each of the new chariots so will get some pics of them up at some point and I just started with the plague drones, which look as though they will be really fun to paint. Still plugging away at the chaos beast too - I just have the vortex bit to get painted up and then he's all done.

nice!

I am really liking the 4 heralds but they are just too pricey to me (especially for models you can take as 4 to a single hq choice). Great paint jobs though and love the warhammer sorceror and nurgle champion.

But they are very nice models!

Thanks guys.

Vortex beast as it is now (pictures aren't great, sorry):

I still haven't got around to doing the vortex bit but other than that he's mostly done - just a few small details need a little more work. I'm not especially happy with the way the body has turned out but don't really feel like re-working it, so it'll have to do!

Also some pics of the chariots, as promised. Burning chariot:

And the chariot + herald, base needs doing here but otherwise finished:

The plan is to get the rest of the chaos stuff done over the next week or so. As well as finishing the vortex guy I also have a chaos lord, warshrine, the plague drones and some hellstriders - all in varying stages of assembly/painting. After that it will be mostly dwarfs and space marines, with the possibility of some Tau, depending on whether I fancy painting the new releases or not!

I'm not normally a fan of Nurgle, but these are quite nicely done. That Tzeentch sorcerer is easily my favourite, I like how the colours transition on the horns.

Pictures of the finished vortex beast (the vortex doesn't look quite so pastel-y IRL - I really need to sort out better lighting for photographs):

I'm not completely happy with it, but not unhappy enough to make any significant changes!

Wow. You took some mediocre models and made them awesome.

Great job! I shall be following this.

Also, how were the casts on the Finecast minis?

Squigsquasher: thank you! I'm glad you like them. The casts were actually pretty good - much better than any I've had in the past. They still had ridiculous amounts of flash but nowhere near as many air bubbles. I'm hoping this means they've finally sorted out some of the issues, rather than me just getting lucky! I still find the material in general a bit rubbish though. You can probably see that the sword on the khorne herald is a little droopy - I've had the same problem with staffs and other thinner parts, as it just doesn't support it's own weight well.

I've finally got the warshrine finished! It's a really awkward model to photograph but here's my best attempt at some pictures:

Good job on the warshrine. Gold is a really tricky colour to paint well, and you did a fantastic job!
