Subject: Doomhammer's warpforge - Is he really back???

Slaanesh Chosen Marine Riding a Fiend
|
I have finally decided to document the work on my army.
But first-off a warning. As you probably guessed from the title there will be not only female marines but female slaanesh marines in here. So expect a lot of sculpted boobs and other weird slaaneshi stuff. I have no problem to discuss the aesthetics of the models i create but it would be kind if you try to avoid the nerd-rage a topic like that tends to create. Thank you in advance.
So with this out of the way what can you expect to see here?
I love converting and sculpting and I think I’ve gotten quite good at it. And you'll see a lot of my stuff here.
My ultimate goal is a fully converted and painted army. But i don't like painting as much as converting. So don't expect to see that many painted stuff at first.
I hope that in creating this blog i get enough motivation to finish more conversion projects than i start. So after a while i hopefully run out of excuses not to paint. Let's hope it works.
This is the current sorry state of my army(not included are the models hiding all over my workdesk):
I don't want to flood this topic with pictures of my older stuff and there are already some pics in my dakka gallery. What pics are missing there are some of my noise marines a bunch of basic marines, terminators and most of my larger models.(and probably other random stuff) If you want to see more of them you could ask and I’ll add pics. But I’ll start off with the stuff I’m currently working on and the rest hopefully will come on its own.
But before i finally add some pictures just a quick intro of my army. The Followers of the Eternal Siren are a heavy slaanesh inspired noise marine style army. Lots of noise weapons and decorated armor. The army is lead by (and named after) a powerfull Keeper of Secret – The Eternal Siren. The army isn't entirely female but as their leader prefers the female form she surrounds herself with mostly female marines. Her first chosen where female to begin with or have been reshaped after her image through the possessed armor. Armor thar where bathed in The Eternal Siren's essence over thousand of years. Due to an alternative way of creating warp-infused astartes 'facsimiles' The Followers can recruit from both genders. (But with a mortality rate that is incredible high and those that survive often degenerate into ravaging possessed.)
For a more in depth background click on the spoiler tag. But I'll also add to the background later on as i work on my army.
And to finally get the ball rolling this is what I’m currently working on:
You might have seen those possessed in my topic in the modelling area. But I'll continue updating them here. If you want more pics of the building process go to my gallery of better to this topic
What shoulder guard do you prefer?
This one lately got a set of fingers and claws. The other hand still needs claws. I will also cut the claws a little bit so that they look somewhat like bones. What's your opinion - especially on the fingers?
I still don't know what to do with his chest and arms (or keep the current one) and heads. One suggestion was to pair the massive arm with an atrophied one. What's your opinion?
This one is now complete but added to finish the whole set.
This is my newest addition into the possessed family. The goal is to create a reptile-like appearance. This is my first try for a scenic pose. He is supposed to have the left arm bent backwards - with the ripped shoulder guard of his prey in his hand.
------------------------------------
This one is supposed to be the champion of my havoc squad. But i am still undecided what weapon-design to put on them. So the champion only leads a bunch of legs into battle.
-----------------------------------
Those ladies are on my todo pile for some time but i plan on working on them again soon.
----------------------------------
And another project of mine i quite like. They started as dark vengance termies and now on a deep dive directly into the debauched embrace of slaanesh. They are intended as cult terminator of slaanesh. So ill replace the combibolter with noise weaponry. It's not wysiwyg but cooler that way.
Comments and critique are welcome. And if you have interesting ideas for other stuff i could add to my army just throw it at me. (painting doesn't count here )

Thanks for the responces. And i think i'll go with option 5. I just need to make a fitting pair for the other side before i add them. And i'll also try to add the headless marine to the models tail so that it coils around him. But for that i have to create a compressed and splintered power armor otherwise it won't fit. if that is done I'll can finally add the arms. So until then you still can post opinions on his shoulders. And as far as shoulders go I've made a pic of some of my converted ones just to show off. There is also a wip havoc launcher in it that will be magnetized to my scratch build rhino. I am also in the process of building an .... errr special weapon mount for it. Might put pictures of it here if i'm done with it. Speaking of rhinos. I have ordered some rhino bitz and robogear kits to build spider leged rhinos. This is just a mockup and the legs need to be fitted into the sidearmor more. But whats your opinion of the idea? And i also finished the body of my chosen champion. I might add a cloak later on but for now he is finished. Both his arms are magnetized so if i can change his wargear if i want to. But this might collide with a cloak so until i feel comfortable with creating cloaks i'll think about it. And finally a quick update on my noise terminators. I've sculpted more screaming faces onto them and added cables to the one I did yesterday.

Yeah. My goal was to mutate the rhino. And the track wheels will be cut away. I don't even have the tracks as i ordered just the sides and floor from a bits shop. The rest will be scratchbuild with a more mutated look of semi-organic metal and such.

Thanks.
And i have another update for you.
This possessed is nearly finished now. The head and arms are glued. The only thing missing are his shoulder guard. The left shoulder is already sculpted. (you can see it on his earlier other pictures). But i need a matching one for the right and attach both.
As an experiment is build those small speaker boxes. I like how they turned out and i'll probably build som more and attach them to my noise marines and noise terminators. And working on them reminded me that i still need 5 noise weapons. So I decided to build some more mutated ones.
I also experimented with sculpting more realistic propotioned figures out of fimo. They are still in a very early stage but some might turn into more cultists or slaveboys and -girls for objective markers. We'll see what i come up with.

Thanks.
The problem I have with the rhino is to find a good design. It should look organic and mechanic at the same time without drifting to much into just beeing random - like nurgle fleshy bits or the typical tentacles. But i've looked at art from giger and maybe I'll find some inspiration there.
0ldman wrote:What incredible work! You must have an amazing amount of patience.
Thank you too.
To be honest. I don't want to think about how much hours I spent on just a handfull if plastic soldiers ... It's crazy. Even more so if you knew that i started sculpting just because i was to cheap to actually buy bitz and kitbash them.

Quick question, is the clawed vehicle next to your rhino a counts-as vindicator?
Thanks. And don't stop with GS. You need time to get good at it. Three tipps that helped me get to that stage.
1. Wet your tools. (I lick mine. But water from a wet piece of cloth or vaseline also works. Just don't overdo it.)
2. Work in layers. Don't try to do too much in one go.
3. Be cheap. Don't buy you HQ models but build them out of regular ones and try to sculpt as close as you can get to the HQ of your choise.
Yes. The vehicle is supposed to be a vindicator. But currently the model is on my todo pile. If i have GS that is already to firm to work fine details with I'll add another muscle or other organic part on his legs. (In essence he's my GS junk bin.
Here is another angle of him also with a mockup of his leg armor he might get if I start working on him again. My idea was to represent his origin as tank through adding tank tracks onto his legs. But I don't know how that would look ...
As far as updates go I have nothing that exiting to show. I worked a little on my noise weapons and added some minor details on the termies. You know that the terminator are nearly finished if you apply the 80/20 rule. The last 20% take 80% of the time ...
I also tried to sketch some concepts for my spider rhinos. But nothing workeable came out of it. Instead i created these two sketches. But for now i placed them on my todo pile. On is a Subjugator Slaanesh scout titan the other is a non dragonified heldrake. Those skecthes show the actual scale of those so you can estimate how large they would be. using the size of a A4 sheet of paper.

I only bought some bits for the rhinos as i had planed to scratchbuild the rest. So no tracks from me ...
And mounting the legs on the wheels either increased the height or the footprint of the model. I'm not a gamer but I'd like to keep the size close to the original model. But I'll think about it.

I felt a little ill so sadly no update from me ... The only thing that i got done before hiding in my bed are some minor details and the concept of the noise weapons of my termies. And thanks for the link. I hadn't seen it. But i think I'll scratchbuild mine as i don't like the boxyness of the space marine flyer. And i think i have the main body of my heldrake mostly fleshed out. The only thing that needs some work is the cockpit area. I don't want it boxy but large enough to theoretically fit a pilot in. But i might use a unarmored pilot or at least witout shoulder guards as a gauge for size. This exact thing is another thing that bugs me on the GW heldrake. It once was a jet with a pilot and the pilot is somewhere fused in the body of the drake. But nothing even resembles a cockpit area. The head is the only thing remotely close but is way to small. And if the jet was once a hell blade of hell talon (from forgeworld) why the dragon head? A dragon head isn't that demonic in my eye. Well. Let's see what i come up with for a cockpit.

At first i kinda liked the dragon appearance. But the more i looked at my already assembled heldrake the more flaws i saw in it.
As a student my hobby bugdet is rather limited. And i also don't want to risk the already assembled one. So I'll either scratchbuild my next drake or wait until i have a steady income to convert one from GW's kits that fit.
As for the one in the sketches a heldrake kit isn't the best start. I want a more jetlike appearance and all the overlapping armor plates on the drake doesn't fit with that. To still keep the rough body shape of the heldrake i wanted to add an air intake below the body with some jet turbines behind it pointing downwards to represent it's ability to hover. Another set of intakes should be besides the wings or on to of them next to the main body for the engine in the back of the jet. But i might scratch the below intake as it might be to bulky with a correctly scaled cockpit. Back to the drawing bord.
I also have a small update. I have worked a little bit on my reptile possessed and the weapons for my noise terminators.
I still don't know if i want to add a more male or female face on him/her. But whatever i do this one won't get boobs as reptiles are no mammals.
My goal on this weapon was to fuse the more stubby combibolters with the noise marine weapon design. The weapon still misses its screaming face, another cable running from the weapon to the shoulder guard and some additional smaller details. But other than that i like how it is shaping up. What's your opinion?

Thanks for the positive response.
The last days were a little slow on updates. I didn't felt so well and i also hadn't much to show. I worked on some smaller details that are hardly visible jet took more time than expected. I also worked on the noise terminator weapons but as they are all looking the same i didn't saw the need of picture.
And there is still not much to show.
But at least i finally finished this possessed with adding his second shoulder. This picture is now officially in my non- wip folder with voting enabled.
I also baked the fimo sculpting experiments. I'm not entirely happy with some of the results but they turned out to be workeable. I'll put cloths, faces and details on them and will probably use them as chained slaves for objective markers like i said. As the fimo putty is an oven baked one it has the advantage that i can add details and change stuff until i baked them. This is nice on organic sculpts like those bodies. But the problem is getting the stuff wraped around the armature. Sculpting heads was imposible as each time i pressed onto it the whole head shape moved around the wire. At least i learned something more about anatomical sculpting.
And i also want to put those pictures in this update. Those models are some month old and as that no sign that i started painting. But i want to hear your opinion on the paint schema. They are obviously not finished (missing highlight and shading, black hair and weapons and such ... ) The teal colored applications will get an osl glow effect in the final stage. (Hopeing i can pull that off.) But I feel that there is something missing or wrong in the color schema. Sadly i can't put my finger on what that something is. Maybe you can give me some ideas.

Thanks. And i'm quite proud of the head myself. It is my latest and most detailed one. But i have a history of sculpting bad heads. But as i generally sculpt them onto the pin of a needle i can only use the good ones. The bad ones get their face scratched off and and a sculpted mask of som sort.
In the second picture the opera mask, chaos star mask and the "shogun" mouth mask are such reused flawed heads.
Paintingwise you are probably right. Those don't have the grimdark grittyness that fits so well for chaos models. And to clarify. The red cloths were originally intended to differenciat the counts as khorne berzerker models from the rest. But as those aren't troops choise anymore i will probably never field them in my slaanesh themed army especially with the ability to build a cheap basic marine melee blob. I might still use red cloths on some squads but I'll have to remember keeping the light blue osl ones away from them.
I won't change the skin color of the ones already painted but mostly because I'm proud of how the skin turned out. On my other models I'll try a more lighter skin tone. I had thought about it before but didn't trust my painting skill to get the feel for such a unnatural colorset. But at the end it'll look better and more chaosy and slaaneshi.
I know that those models are unwashed. I wanted to wash them but as i didn't liked the outcome of the whole schema i never got to that point.
I don't have something for an update as i have a very slow day and didn't want to ruin the stuff that is already on the way with uninspired details. But instead i will throw something from my gallery in here. Those are some of my earlier scratchbuilds, slaanesh themed counts as obliterator and mutilator. I never liked those bulky nurgly obliterator models and the multilator are just a cheap reproduction with different arms. (They could have at least give them some new torso variance. Why reuse those bulky things, GW?)
These models are together with my keeper of secrets the longest still unfinished projects. They have seen all my stages of sculpting experience with all the changes and returns of different sculpting putty and styles and are full of flaws and simple designs. (And still are unfinished ... ) I didn't like the bulky oblits but i wanted to keep the mass. So those are quite large compared to marines or even terminator. They are still 2 or 3 heads larger than my scaled up noise terminators.
What are your opinions on those?

Thanks.
I have another update for you. This time with actuall recently made content.
I've worked some more on my mixed collection of noise themed weaponry and put them all in one picture. With that most of my noise terminator are close to finished. Their bodys are fine and only the weapons, the backside and some shoulders need some work. I'll be able to finish them in the next few days.
I also need to finish the possessed sculpts that started all this blog. So i did some work on the reptile one. And I'll assemble the snake one soon too as i can't possibly fit a body into the coils. It just doesn't fit.
Finally i worked on one of the slaves and an really old sculpt that was supposed to become a demon princess of some sort before i bought the GW plastic box. I build two demon prince out of the parts and as i didn't see the need of another one i dropped the sculpt. But i started again just for purpose of sculpting.

I had a productive day and as a result i got some more stuff done. Here are the highlights.
My noise terminators are shaping up good. On those two only some minor stuff needs to be done. And the others are not far behind.
I also worked on the slaves. And for gender equality one male one female. You have to imagine that they're pulling at the chains that hold them.
I also did some random stuff. On is the armature of a chaos spawn. This is in fact my second try at a spawn sculpt but the first didn't turn out to my liking.
The other thing is a head that might or might not go onto my vindicator counts as walker. It all depends on how it turns out once finished.

I don't know if i'm the best at making tutorials. I tend to ramble unstructured on things like this.
The lighter hues of greenstuff are a mixture of greenstuff and milliput. It has the advantages of sandability and it takes details better due to it's sharper edges. It has the advantages of both milliput and GS but depending on how much milliput is added the consistency changes. I really like it but it needs some time to get used to.
And it's also cheaper as you get more putty for less money.

I have another update for you. This is in fact only a minor one. I did some smaller work here and there. For example i worked on some possessed arms that will either go to the reptile one or the one with the chainsaw-mouth arm. And i also attached cableing on my noise terminator. As i had to blue- tac the termies together to use gravity to shape the cables realisically i thought, why not make a group shot. And here it is.
Starts to look nice and complete, isn't it?

This time I've worked on my possessed with the goal to finally finish them. I'll put an original possessed arm on this one. Then I only need to sculpt a head and she'll be finished. And i decided against the chainsaw mouth arm. I'm not entirely happy how the torso and arm turned out. But i hope that it will look good enough once painted. I just want to finish it. I have also glued marine and possessed together to be able to sculpt the feets. (This will be funny to paint ... ) The arm i had planed for this turned out to be to short. I originaly had the intention that the possessed right arm was grabbing the shoulder of the marine. Now i need to think what to do. I could create some sort of power fist. Then it should be long enough. Or i could create mutated long fingers or even do something entirely different What's your opinion? What i should do? And i also layed the groundwork of the torso of my chaos spawn. My goal is to create a spawn that is in the process of mutating from marine to the bulk a spawn is. So I'll try to add bent, warped and streched pieces of the armor on it. But it is only in it's early stages of sculpting.

Thanks.
As a lazy perfectionist i fear that i'll ruin the models with a bad paintjob(The perfectionist side). And out of fear of ruining them i never started painting my newer works (the lazy side of me ...).
But i plan on starting to paint some of my older primed models shortly after the noise termies and the possessed are done. Then I'll try to do both painting and continue on my newer sculpting work. And as both possessed and termies are nearly done this might lead to me dusting off my paint pots next week.
With that i hopefully build up my painting skills until i trust them enough again to work on my newer stuff. (And the fact that it's still to cold to prime securely is also a reason for staying with the older work.) And i probably fetch my mistreated aobr orks to test some pale skin tones on them.
But don't expect to much. The last time i painted was a year ago and i wasn't that good to begin with.

I like the idea of both the flesh hooks and the tentacles. I think i'll try to build barbed tentacles piercing into and maybe even trough the shoulder guard. The hooks-bundle then can be used as a base to sculpt the hand around and at the same time connect both models. Maybe something similar to lucius the eternals tentacle whip arm.

A tired day in doomhammers forge ... I attached an arm on the possessed and the soundbox serving as the powerpack of the bassblaster of my noise termie. At least i can officially say that the noise weapons with the exeption of the basblaster are now ready. With that only some minor stuff needs to be done to finish the termies. Namely i need to think about the melee weapons of them and one needs another helmet and another one some decoration on the back. And for my possessed i only need two heads and finish the barbed tentacle arm and i'm finished. But i'm so tired ... even too tired to take some photos ... So i'll just plug in an older pic from The Eternal Siren herself. She was the first entirely scratchbuild project. ... and is still highly unfinished and full off flaws. But i had started working on her again yesterday. She is supposed to have 4 arms but i have chopped them off as her torso was way to slim and i had to widen it. And i might even rebuild her arms entirely as they were one of the flawed parts of her. The inspiration from her were obviously the forgeworld keeper of secrets but i wanted one with more armor and also didn't want to spent that much money. And i also found this bad boy the other day in our old toybox. And old transformers toy tank with superheavy potential. A little grimdark-y-fied and a gun swap and he could probably be a good shadowsword as support for my scratchbuild baneblade.

This is the current result of the barbed tentacle idea. It turned out larger than i imagined it so I'll have to think how to add the hand. (or don't add a hand at all)
Sometimes i feal stupid. In my wild sculpting craze i never though about using actual bits as basis for sculpting works ...
Well i build this arm as replacement for the chainsword mouth arm and will sculpt the rest around it.
And this is the current shape of my second spawn,
And this is the spawn i already did. It isn't a bad sculpt but it didn't turn out like i had planed. I don't like the head and the whole bulk of the model. The original idea was just one massive arm of bulging muscles. But i overdid the whole muscles on the model and both the second arm and legs where to long and the torso to wide. I'll still paint it up in the future and might even use it but it will never be truely loved.

The motto of todays update is: "Heads! Heads everywhere."
You might recongnize the horned one in the middle as one head that i did earlier but turned out to small. I think now it looks useable. And i like the two on the right. I even tried to pressmold a neckpart for easier assembly and neck sculpting. Worked better than expected and I'll probably do this more often. Not al are finished but i'm getting better with heads. ( to myself)
I also put heads on two of my scratchbuild ladies and layed the groundwork for the heads of the others with some random leftover putty.
I officially put one noise terminator in the finished models pile. (The axe one) I didn't take a picture as the group shot shows all the interesting details already. Now i have to finish 3 backs and 1 helmet and the termies are all done.
KrautScientist wrote:Phew, this thread continues to be full of amazing stuff -- actually, it's actually rather challenging to stay on top of it all, given the frequency of your updates So I'm sorry if this turns out to be a rather long reply:
Thanks. The update frequenzy will probably go down a little beginning next month as I'll start to work towards my master's thesis from there on.
KrautScientist wrote:
While some of the earlier sculpts seem a little awkward in places (plus I am not totally sold on some of the heads), you have managed to really make these look special.
What heads didn't you like and which do you prefer then? As half of them are still missing theirs i love new and interesting ideas for those.
KrautScientist wrote:I really like the "flesh hooks" you added to the reptilian model and probably wouldn't add an additional hand -- after all, the hooks nicely represent how the Possessed has mutated to better fit his fighting style.
Too late. I have already put a hand there.
KrautScientist wrote:I think the model would be instantly improved by a hundred percent if you replaced the head with something different -- either a readymade part, from a steed of Slaanesh for example, or something more in line with the classic Keeper of Secrets?
Here's an idea: Since the Eternal Siren is so fond of the female form, why not have the spawn be male - or at least "male-ish" - in appearance? That would nicely represent their "failings" on a whole new level. Plus it would be a nice way to contrast the lithe forms of the more female Marines and Possessed against the clunkiness and ungainlyness of the male spawn.
Well the spawn already has breasts so male is out of the question. And we agree that the head is probably the biggest letdown. The elongated head of a steed or classic keeper is a good idea. Another bit for my next bit-order.
KrautScientist wrote:Oh, and regarding the painting: I wasn't trying to imply your paintjobs were horrible or anything.

I never understood it that way. Quite the opposite. My biggest problem is with details. I often loose myself in them and at the end the model might look "off" because the details i did doesn't add up but contradict each other. And the opposite happens too. I just start with the idea of some details but i never flesh out the piece as a whole and that leaves me with lot of empty space that i don't know how to fill. This is true for both my painting and my sculpting/conversions.
You definitely helped. It is always nice to hear praise but you can only improve if get the "bad stuff" pointed out for you. And you not only did that but came up with ways to improve and alternate ideas to play with. back to you.

Thanks. PatrickDiomedes wrote:I'm sure you've answered this question before, but what do you use to sculpt all of this besides greenstuff? Most of it is milliput/ GS mixture of different rations. The yellow stuff is pure milliput standard and every shade from yellow up to pure green is the mentioned mixture. The brown sculpts are made from fimo, an oven backing clay i experimented with. There is probably a piece of actal brown stuff in there(the brown blade for example) but i abbandoned it very fast because i think that there is something in it that my skin don't like. And even more head related updates. I've put a head and arm on this possessed. Now i only need some gap closing and a shoulder and she is finished. And two of my slaanesh cultists got a face now too. And here is a small update on the state of the noise marine weapons. They also getting closer and closer to finish. But as i work only irregulary on them i can't say how long they need to finish. And this is probably the biggest update. The energy pack is build, the cabling is mostly finished and only some minor details on the weapon needs work. And i need to decide what to do with the power fist.

There will be sockets coming. The missing sockets are the reason why i called the cabling 'mostly' finished.

Thanks. But please don't break it. There might be other who still need the button.(at least i hope) And look what i did today: Well. It isn't much but at least i dusted up some of my paint pots and tested how bad my brush control degraded. I also tried some very light blending (some is visible on the reaper autocannon shoulder. And i am somewhat amazed that the grey skin on the orc didn't look too bad on picture. I thought it would be much worse. It isn't much but at least a start. What's your opinion on the grey skin?

Also, why grey skin on Orks? It's pretty interesting, but I don't understand it since I can't see Slaanesh Orks.
He indeed is primed grey. And i use my orks only to test some skin painting schemes before i ruin my csm. As a result i have some very strange colored orks. Those are just the ones from the aobr box that i never used.

I painted a little bit again. I felt comfortable enough to work on my test model some more. I added some more details and used washes on him. I think he turned out good enough to use this scheme for the rest of my army.
What do you think?
And i'll plug in another model. It is only in a very early stage of basecoloring but i wanted to show this older piece i did. One of my earlier scratchbuilds(only head and shoulder were GW bitz). And yes, the backpack is scratchbuild too. Only the vents are cut from a normal backpack.
I really like how she levitates as she is only attached to the base with those energy blasts from her hands.
And finaly for today the current state of the cableing and weapon. The only thing that needs some work is his powerfist.

HAZZER wrote:Hi,
I am really liking your sculpts, they are really good! I'e never really used muillput to sculpt with before only just for a diroma as it cheaper than GS! I may have to try that! Your army is really aweispring stuff dude! I was also wandering if you could share any words of wisdom on sculpting too?
Subbed,
HAZZER.
Thanks.
To be honest with my current sculpting skills i wouldn't suggest pure milliput as sculpting putty. Yes i used it successfull but it has some flaws. One way to use it is as a cheap basic shape of a sculpt. Mush it around your armature to build it up and do the final details onto it.
But what works amazingly well for me is adding GS into milliput. Even in a ratio of GS : Milliput of 1:3 the change to the workeability is nice. And it is still cheaper than GS but has more flexibility as pure milliput and still retains the ability for sharp edges. The other way (ratio 3:1) works also very well. The GS looses some of it's "memory" and as such can be used to create sharper details. On top of that it gains sandability.
But without the "memory" to much pressure with your tools will leave marks quite quickly. So smoothing is the main problem and focus. And clay shaper tools might be a good investion.(But aren't needed, a basic metal tool still works fine if you use it with more care.)
And some very general tipps and stuff on sculpting besides milliput/gs mixing:
1) Wet your tools slightly to avoid sticking to the putty. But don't use to much or you'll flood your model and nothing will stick. I lick my tools(more controll and salvia isn't as flowing as water) but wet cloth works too.
2)There are two ways of sculpting similar to painting. Layering and blending.
- Layering: Layering is needed for all self hardening putty (milliput, GS and the like) As the putty has a limited sculpting time don't do to much in one go. Add details only after the surface(for example armor) is smoothed and relatively hardened. Don't doing this will lead to uneven armor and warped details while smoothing around them.
- Blending: Oven baking putty/clay can be worked with indefinitely until you bake them. So you can sculpt away and blend new details into the rest of the model. Errors or mismatching details can be corrected. This is especially nice if you want to sculpt larger organic stuff. I have only limited experience with this technic so i can't say much about it. But you can mix both. Sculpt the basic shape with baking clay and layer additional details onto it.
3) Use references. I learned much about sculpting as i tried to recreate already existing HQ units while only using very basic models.
And most important:
4) Don't get jealous over the work of others but better ask yourself. "How had he/she created this and how can i recreate it?". Learn from the success and knowledge of others.
I'll stop my ranting here. If you still want to know more I'll direct you to these.

Another painting update just to show you that i actually did bring myself to paint again. And to be honest i actually like how it's looks.
Posting those pics is also a good way of showing my older stuff that i didn't take a picture off before priming. Now with color you can actually recognize some details.
I also worked on the champion of my noise terminator and added her massive sword-axe thingy. She only needs some work on the sword handle and she is done.
And can you guess what this sculpt was supposed to be? It is an earlier one of mine and not warhammer related. But it still amazes me how well it looks - even more if you take into consideration that i wasn't that experienced then. This just shows how important a good reference can be.
So can you guess who see is?

ghosty wrote:Queen of Blades? I'm right, aren't I? Can we get some close ups on your earlier works please? They look outstanding! You are right. I stopped her then because i felt that i wasn't able to finish the rest. (Those bladewings are really fiddly to sculpt and even with my current skill hard to pull off.). And the fact that a zerg themed Tyranid army was way out of my skill (and money) range that time was the final stop of the project. I'll maybe start this project sometime in the future if i have a steady income and enough time. (with a capital maybe) I might have some of my earlier stuff that i can take pictures off. But most is primed black and with my current (bad) camera setup you could never see the details. But with ongoing painting my old stuff will find their way into this blog. I'll have to look trough my "to-paint" box and see what i can pull out of it.
