Topic.

Specifically I am referencing my newly acquired batch of Dark Eldar OOP Raiders. Do I seriously have to teeter 10 models onto the hull of this thing somehow to show embarked models?

Pretty much new to 40k outside of very small (<1000 point) and casual (at home) games. Help!

Yes. Far as I know theres not the slightest rule suggesting that the models have to get stuck onto the vehicle. May be worth sticking a few in any reasonable spaces to help keep track.

Take the Ork Battlewagon for instance. You cannot fit 20 dudes on that at all.

I stick a model on top of any transport to represent the unit inside, and have the rest of the unit neatly lined up off board until it's time to disembark. It's useful for both my opponent and me to be able to assess what is where at a glance.

It could be fun to model 'em hanging on for their dear lives though. Not entirely sure how five people fit on a venom, however..

Unless you've got an identification system (eg a Tactical Squad has '1' markings on it, as does their Rhino), this should be done for all transports, even if only the sergeant and any characters. When you've got 4-5 transports that all look the same criss crossing across the board, it's like a game of cups and balls for both you and your opponent.

Just stick the pertinent models on top or even next to it to keep track of what's in it.

Pretty much this. When I have a Ghost Ark with 9 warriors + lancetek and another with 10 warriors, I only put the cryptek inside one of the ghost arks. When both of them have 9 warriors and a lancetek with a solar pulse, only this one will be inside the ghost ark.

If you remember to properly identify these special cases, you'll be fine

A guy from my local shop went ahead and actually managed to put 20 dudes on the truck, only that one of those doesnt have a arm, and they didnt have bases, so its just a "lump" of orcs on a tray that you takes out when they are not in the truck.

Yeah... he went out of his way of making a truck with 20 dudes in it

I remember the heady days of 2nd Ed where an Ork Battlewagon could carry as many models as you could actually fit on it, and any that fell off in the movement phase counted as falling off and suffered hits for doing so...

Especially if youve got a load of transports with a lot of different things in them. Stick one model representing the unit (like a sergeant or special weapon guy) on top of the transport to indicate that A: it's not empty, and B: has melta/plasma/witches/lances/whatever in it.

Right behind you...

That's what I do to remind myself who is in what trukk. ^^

As a side note, I'd like to see if anyone has a picture of 10 Orks in one of the old Trukks... THAT would be as impressive as actually fitting 10 SM in a Rhino :-)

It would be hideous for Stormravens, though kudos to anyone who figured out how to stick twelve guys on it and a Dreadnought either on it or attached to its underside without a) tipping the 'raven or b) permanently gluing it to the 'raven.

Maybe in that case one could just have everyone hanging from metal hooks. Would look absolutely silly and not the slightest bit fit WYSIWYG in terms of absolute literal-ness (as they aren't IN it, but hanging OFF of it!) but it'd fit the spirit of the law!

You will very rarely come across anyone that has modeled their raiders with DE hanging off of it.

I do model the gunner - but he's magnetized to make it easy to track weapon destroyed.

I do not model the driver. Instead, I place one of my warrior/wyche models in that spot to indicate which unit is on the raider.

I remember seeing a model of a rhino with 10 marines sitting inside, considering the GW model is oversized for the scale anyway it shouldn't be too hard. I think it made use of land speeder pilots for the seated poses.

That would be an impressive conversion! The Rhino is very much undersized, not oversized. And single space marine cannot sit in the current rhino as the height is too short, and there's only seating for about 4 marines, not 10. I considered converting something similar myself but the rhino was just too small.
If you can find the image I'd love to see how it was done.

Well, it depends on what scale you use.
Space Marine next to a Cadian are both (within a mm) the same height. Now do you assume 32mm is 1.8m or 2.1m?
Are Space Marines undersized for the scale or are all other models oversized?
Assuming 32mm:2.1m then the Rhino should be 10.05cm long when it measures 11.5cm.

To help me keep track I numbered all my Rhinos with a transfer and then put that number next to the unit on my army list before deployment.

Again - helps both yourself and your opponent keep track easily and transparently.

I use different colored pairs of dice. Red dice in raider has group of warriors with the red dice next to them in my reserves zone. Blue dice wyches. And so on. Worked well for me and my opponent.

You could always do what FW did with the IG heavy transports- make a cluster of really small marines that could fit inside a Rhino (Or in this case, DE in a raider) and could be removed without undue difficulty. You'd have to leave the Rhino's top removable, but hey, gravity keeps it on there just fine.

Speaking of vehicle drivers, I did put a driver in my IG Deathstrike (yes, I made a Deathstrike, and yes, it has actually worked out for me. It causes people to throw an insane amount of fire at it, forcing them out of position so my little Guardsmen can better drown them in lasguns!) but of course I also stuck the hatch on and glued it... Whoops. Sort of wanted to stick a little LED in there or something to backlight the guy.

Also this made me think of the Land Speeder Storm- how would you even begin to fit five Scouts inside that?!

I decided that I was going to paint my Tau in specific color lining (all the little lines on the models) I have 9 different colors, so what I go to paint up transports (if I ever decide to use them) - They will be painted the same color as the squad that will be inside. So the Blue squad will be in the Blue DF with the Blue Fireblade.

Doesn't the LS Storm come with 5 scouts in various posistions as part of the kit?

Admittedly i dont think they are just sitting there but are hanging out of the doors and generally looking very cinematic.

Wasn't it an old rule that to take units in a transport you had to fit them? Like Orc boyz in the old oop trukks.

Only the Orks had that, IIRC. But many older codexes (and some new) demand that a unit must be within the passenger limit to buy a Dedicated Transport, unlike SM and the like that can take Razorbacks for squads that can't fit without splitting into Combat Squads.
