Hard to argue with grots... you've just got to keep in mind what they are... dirt cheap scoring units. Don't expect them to do your fighting for you. They do free up other units for fighting though.

Sadly they cost the same as cultists who are better in almost everyway. Here's to hoping the new dex docks down their cost.

Perhaps in the next codex Grots will cost only a single point? That means you could fill out every slot in a double FOC game with grots and still have over a thousand and a half points left over even in 2k point games.
Good luck moving over 360 models in a non-geological timeframe though.

My friend played a game against a guy with a TON of gretchins. My friend got swamped and lost accordingly. He got bogged down in combat by three squads full to the brim with gretchins whilst all his other boyz grabbed all the objectives. They are very viable for stopping the enemy scoring units by assualting them.

Grots are 3pts each runtherd is 10 so thats 40 for 10 guys, cultists are 50 for 10 so how does that add up?

At that level I'd take the cultists every time.
But if you were comparing say, 18 Grots/Runtherd (64) with 13 Cultists then its a whole different ballgame

I totally agree with that, the only way grotz win is in hordes, I was only correcting Kain's error for future reference.

Gretchin are terrible in comparison to similar units. HOWEVER, their main advantage is not actually their stats or their points. If anything, I'd say Gretchin are better than Cultists due to their model size.
You can hide Gretchin out of LOS by putting them behind just about anything. Scoring units that can't be shot at?

They're cheap scoring tar-pits that can hide easily, so worth taking if those attributes are useful to you - but are otherwise pretty much useless.
Here's hoping the next codex makes them a little more interesting - model-wise and fluff-wise, they're wonderful.

I once heard a player say that he used to run grits as a shield for his foot slogging orks. Grots would die or take the first charge/overwatch while the boys could focus on following the closely to charge without fear of overwatch or casualties. Operation snotling shield so to speak.
Is this still a viable tactic (not saying competitive, just viable)?

Yes to both Unholyllama, the other player can't do jack against a horde army unless tailored to fight it. Cue guard defense bush at table corner.

Ten grots and a runtherd in a small box for $10...meaning you can run 60 of the little devils for the same dollar price as 20 boyz.
nvm, they're $16.50 now...

Its also easier to get cover for your unit from grots since the requirement was lowered from 50% to 25%.
Of course a KFF is going to be more effective at getting more units as you only need 1 model in range to benefit.

In a gunline you can string them out just behind an Aegis. If they shoot at you, you've got 2+ cover. If they try and assault they have to shoot the grots first. 40 point meat shield.

The one thing about Grotz they are almost always underestimated.
As stated they are small ans usuful to hide to hold objectives.
They are BS 3 and while the chances of wounding and killing low it can happen. Best I've done is a 27 Grot squad shoot and kill 2 plague marines in a good round of shooting bad round of rolling for him. Afterwards the remaing 9 that lived and were running did a run by shooting that took the last wound off his Papa Nurgle. I've also had a buddy run off a 5 man scout squad and kill a 5 man tac squad in a single game. If your dice WAAAGH!!! is strong then anything is possible.
But the down size is they are not orks and do not get mob rule so they can and will possible break if you lose enough.
If you do take them avoid going for the extra Rutherd stop just short and save 13 points
67 for 19
107 for 29.
i love grotz they have amazing models, I just wish there were more options. Like sneaky kommando grotz, suicide bomber grotz(like the squiqs), storm grotz(jet packs), and grot jets. and like fantasy squig riders

This is actually pretty much what orks do in the fluff verbatim.
Not the most cutthroat tactic ever, but in a friendly setting I'm sure it'd work alright.
The most interesting thing I've found is with Grots and Aegis defense lines. The grots can hide, but the runt herders can't. Since you can only shoot what you can see, the runtherders can get "sniped" off quickly because they're too stupid to duck under the wall
Also, the grots can't see over the aegis, so they can't shoot anything. If you put one on a quadgun, he could probably see a flyer coming at him, but that'd be it (that or the new Eldar Zord thing)

Grots need big squads, but I'd agree to being sneaky to avoid the extra runtherd. The way they get played will probably depend on the mission:
For objectives, hide them on objectives (ADL is great as mentioned especially with a quad gun) but don't advance them-Troops win games and grots won't get to far flung objectives-leave it for the Boyz.
In scenarios like the Relic I'd use them as a shield for the tough unit to grab and run with the relic itself.
In kill point games either run a carpet and risk giving free points to save a few boyz, or hide and risk the Orks running like hell getting mowed

I've seen hideous, hideous 2nd edition Gretchin from between 10 and 50 cents per model both on ebay and at club sales.
Might be buying some more next weekend. God they're ugly though

Its worth noting here that Gretchin cannot be seen behind an Aegis.
Screw 2+ cover when you can have an invincible objective camper.

Yeah, if you just want cheap grots and don't care about their looks, the old 2nd Ed ones are dead cheap. You can do some simple conversion of helmets and gun barrels, or maybe replace the whole head (with a lot of Dremel grinding), but otherwise they're hard to customise.
I've actually had more luck using WHFB goblins (especially the old Night Goblins box) and giving them guns - although a lot of the newer plastic goblins are rather small.
As tiny conversion projects, grots are great. My dream is for GW to give us rules to allow a playable Grot Liberation Front army (i.e. no orks at all), but I'm not holding my breath...

I think there are some rumours floating around that it will be possible. In which case I shall cry. As I will have to buy thousands of Grots.... by choice.

I'd love to see that, after all WHFB Goblins get it so why not Grots? I also think they should make a model for Makari the Grot if they went down that route.
