I guess there's a reason the hatch opens forwards.
That's a very Scifi-looking tank, though. Good catch.

To you, 4,500 Japanese Yen. Postage should be fairly cheap and obviously there is no danger of paying a customs duty.
It is a 1/35th scale kit. According to Wikipedia the real vehicle is 677 cm long, 340 wide, and 264 high. That works out to 19.3 cm by 9.7 by 7.5 as a model, a bit larger than a Land Raider.

They do look a bit out in the open.
The design was intended to deflect nuclear blast from above more than protect against ground level threats.
It was an experimental prototype. They might have put skirts on the tracks if it had gone forwards to more development.

I was thinking the same thing. Even the shape of the armored sides would be a liability against other tanks or anti-tank weapons. If the round hit the tank on the lower side of the sloped armor, it would deflect it downward into the drive systems, making it easier to cripple the tank.

I don't think nuclear blasts would come from above [if the explosion did it would be powerful enough to vaporise the tank]

I've read about this, I think, and surviving nuclear blasts really was the goal. Not being at ground zero, of course. But imagine 10, 20, even 50km out where you get nasty waves as air is pushed out by explosive forces.
Also I believe doctrine for some nuclear weapons was to use them in airburst configurations to increase the damage done. Thankfully for humanity these ideas were never put into practice.

Ah, I see.
Yes, airbursts are standard practice for nukes and othe large ordinance. If it detonates at 0 elevation, half the force is directed down and much is absorbed by the Earth. The other half of the energy largely is wasted as well since it goes back into the air. If you know the yield you can calculate the ideal elevation for maximum damage from the shock wave on the downward side of the blast.
In addition to increased damage, the secondary benefit is reduced fallout, both local and widespread. Most fallout isnt tied to the device itself, rather it is secondary radiation created by stray neutrons destabilizing the atoms on the ground. These unstable atoms tend to be highly radioactive and will be sucked up into the upper atmosphere by the fireball on the ground (which causes the mushroom cloud). With airbursts, most those stray neutrons become mostly inert before they hit other nuclei and the fireball is high enough that you wont have a mushroom cloud. This prevents the global fallout that everyone seems to think will happen and after about a week, the radiation levels drop to a point where they are just above background (radiation from naturally occurring elements, the sun and other constantly present sources).

I suppose the hatch gives the tank commander some protection from enemies ahead of the turret. There are several other Soviet vehicles with the same hatch position.

The T28 is the other 4-tracked vehicle of which I am aware as a kit in 1/35th scale.
http://www.dragon-models.com/d-m-item.asp?pid=DRA6750
There is also a kit by Accurate Armour but it's very expensive.
I would have bought the T28 kit but the A39 Tortoise kit came out about the same time and I bought that.

Btw, this was a real tank from 1959..... Automatically Appended Next Post: This special purpose tank was intended to fight on cross country terrain, inaccessible to conventional tanks, acting as a heavy breakthrough tank, and if necessary withstanding even the shockwave of a nuclear explosion. It was planned as a tank of the Supreme Command Reserve.
