Thunder warriors were a means to an end. That is all they were ever designed to be.

Actually, I think that's in a BL Novel now too - The Outcast Dead.
Thunder Warriors are 'more powerful' on an individual basis than a Space Marine, but they are also far less stable, I think?
Wasn't there something in there about them not living past (X) years, mostly, with (X) being much, much shorter than a Space Marine, who I believe at this point were thought to be functionally immortal, aside from that whole "most likely die in battle though" thing.

Thunder Warriors were built to fight.
Space Marines were built to obey.
It's hard to create a stable empire when a large chunk of your fighting force has a constant urge to kill.

Having just finished The Outcast Dead, I don't recall it being stated explicitly or outright that Thunder Warriors were stronger than Astartes, the only evidence to this is that a Thunder Warrior defeats a couple Astartes in one on one combat (not at the same time obviously), but that doesn't automatically mean that ALL Thunder Warriors are stronger than Astartes, let alone that that particular Thunder Warrior is stronger, IIRC he took them by surprise and even then they were able to put up a good fight before being killed.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it was explained in that book.
Thunder Warriors were created for a specific role. Once the Emperor had the Primarch DNA to play with, they were replaced with a less powerful but otherwise ultimately better model.

Not to mention that this particular Thunder Warrior was a great war hero, and the Astartes weren't in power armour at the time, IIRC.
And Thunder warriors went crazy and/or died after a certain age, which isn't an ideal trait for your chosen warriors on a long-term operation like the Great Crusade.

They were physically more powerful and aggressive than Astartes (but Primarchs? Are you on drugs?), but didn't have all the adaptations that Astartes have to enable them to survive in the wider galaxy. They were also a symbol of the bloody Unification, something the Emperor wanted people to forget as soon as possible. They were basically short-term roid monsters akin to the guys Fabius Bile creates.

yes, outcast explicitly states that thunder warriors were stronger and faster,
but they had stability issues, and were a "temporary" thing by design, but its a bit fuzzy on the details, but it does points out for a fact that they are stronger ect, but less stable+ some other issues.

didnt the ban on the butchers nails have something to do with them? I could be totally off base here as its been a while since I read that one, but I remember a blurb that linked the old thunder warriors anger problems to why angrons legions not allowed to use th ebutchers nails anymore.

Nope. The Butcher's Nails were long after the Thunder Warriors. Came from some technologically advanced world where they used it on gladiators. They were banned because the World Eaters all decided to implant themselves with them, and became legion of psychopaths. Think the Marines Malevolent, but worse.

No. Primarchs far surpass any other humans by a colossal margin. Only the Emprah is stronger than a Primarch.

Not by a long shot, bro.
The TW given in the example barely took out two normal unarmoured SM's, he'd just get punted all the way to the EoT if he met a Primarch.

Nope. Primarchs were engineered by the Emperor himself to be demi-gods. Thunder Warriors are closure to custodes, iirc.

Where does it say they were stronger? But since you asked. http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Primarch It should be noted that Adeptus Custodes gene-seed, which is apparently derived from the undifferentiated Primarch gene-stock, is more complex than base Astartes gene-seed as it contains 12 more elements. The source of Custodian gene-seed, being only one step removed from the actual DNA of the Emperor Himself, may explain the Custodes' extremely heightened sense of kinship with the Emperor. However, the Custodian genetic code is still far simpler than each of the individual Primarch genomes, even though all were derived from the same source: the undifferentiated, pure Primarch gene-stock.

so the primarchs were still superior to a custode
