I was surprised to see Vodka as the number one drink in the US, but perhaps it is that we do a lot of mixed drinks that use Vodka, or maybe that Vodka is cheaper then Whiskey. I think there are cheap whiskeys as well, but I'm not sure. Either way, enjoy.

I am shocked it isn't Whiskey. I think Ahtman's theory on mixed drinks is probably right. Also, it's dirt cheap in comparison for (generally) higher % alcohol by volume.

It's interesting that all the major whiskey/bourbon/scotch producing countries prefer Vodka, while some of the Vodka producing countries (Sweden, France) prefer whiskey.

Huh. Vodka surprised me at first, but thinking about it...it makes sense. I mean, I can think of several brands of Vodka that are $18 and cheaper for a fifth. Plus, there are soooo many mixed drinks that use it.

I worked at a liquor store, vodka utterly crushes the rest. I would hazard a lot of the whiskey countries are either suspect (It probably is whiskey in Saudi Arabia, but what does that really mean?), or the women have a marked preference against the hard stuff.

Vodka rules supreme. It looks like Russia's new plan for Glorious World Conquest is going well. In the meanwhile, the Dutch are the only ones to get wasted on gin... That at least does seem to be correct, if jenever is counted as gin.

There should be a special section of the USA for Brandy here in Wisconsin. Apparently 1/3 of the USA's total consumption is done by the 2.5 million folks in our state who can legally drink. That and since the high today here is -3* F, I'm pretty sure we all just use it to stay warm.
Cheers from Brandy land.

I would agree. From personal experience I mostly drink Vodka and Beer when I go out (and Jagermeister). Pretty much never Whiskey, although that could stem from a very bad experience involving me and a bottle of Jack Daniels I had freshman year in college. I still can't smell the stuff without fighting the instinctive urge to throw up.

my guess is that because Vodka is cheap and whenever there's a crazy college party frats buy gak tons of it. EDIT: Its used a lot when spiking drinks too. If the punch got spiked it was probably vodka.

From my experience, the common belief among real alcoholics is that vodka is the least detectable liquor, and thus the safest one to get hammered with at work, school, or behind your parents' backs.

A little surprised at first by the dominance of Vodka until I, too, realized just how many mixed drinks use it (although I prefer my Vodka by unadulterated, preferably poured from a glass skull or a bottle with the name of a Polish pianist/composer on it).
I wonder what the map would look like if Scotland was marked separately? Surely, the home of Scotch whiskey would be a veritable fortress of aged, single malt goodness?

But what about Iceland?

As a bar and club owner I can tell you, Real drinkers in America drink whiskey, weekend warriors drink vodka. At my small bar Jameson/Powers and Fireball are our life blood. However at my nightclub, its all vodka, I have to stock 6 different brands each with between 8-12 different flavors. Its a pain in my butt. I rarely have ladies order anything but vodka drinks, although lately at my small bar I have seen a spike in them ordering Jameson and Ginger.
It is interesting to see how the venue changes what people drink. The small bar people are what I call professional drinkers, they drink what they want and want what they drink. Nightclub people drink what is popular or marketed the most, their tastes are also driven more by what the ladies will drink.
I am very curious about this data though, how it was collected and how it breaks up by states and regions. While I'm sure vodka is very popular in cities, I'm sure whiskey is the tipple of choice in rural areas. Id like to see how close it came.

Whiskey for Oz seems pretty spot on... From what I've seen, spirit drinkers are split fairly evenly between Scotch/Irish Whiskey, Bourbon, or Rum, although that's somewhat regional... I suspect that there are a larger proportion of Rum drinkers in northern Queensland than elsewhere...
Vodka drinks are more the province of teenagers, due to tasting like softdrink.
