Subject: Eldar War Walker loadouts: what is best?
|
 |

Hello all, I have been running a squad of three walkers all with bright lances and it works pretty well vs anti tank (even more so with guide). My question is would the guided BL walkers be a better choice than each walker with a BL and SL?
It sounds good on paper, assuming the SL's get hits it would make the BL twin linked so you can reroll hits. This will also give you more shots than the dual BL walkers as well as a little more target versatility.
Any input on what will be the better loadout in a balanced warhost?

So very beyond yes. Two Bright Lances. If you have two, you get two rolls to hit just like if you were twin linked, plus the ability to hit twice. That's not even including being guided. If you take them, two lances.

Dual lances are much better than lance+laser. The dual lances don't have role confusion and can lead to more lance hits, which is what you really want. Considering you have access to guide and prescience, you can always twin link them if you need.
Other good builds are dual scatter lasers, scatter/star, scatter/shuri or dual shuri. The 1st is for all purpose, as the sheer amount of dakka kills up to Av12 and basically anything else. Starcannon twin linked helps against 2+ saves. The last two are generally for outflanking, as they get into shuricannon range. They also cost a bit less. The best build for hunting heavy armor is by far the dual lance. It is also fantastic for killing TEQ.

Well, dual scatterlasers is the best loadout, eventually buffed by a Farseer using guide or prescience.
The most bang for the bucks.

I think you're thinking of the previous codex! I loved my 6 Scatter Laser walkers back then. 24 shots to hit, with guide/prescience, for like...180 points I think.
Nowadays we have S6-7 from serpents, spiders, etc. Take Bright Lances on them.

Why bright lances. How many tanks or heavily armored units do you expect?
I have Fire Dragons who always get their job done.
Moreover, if you use bright lances or lascannons, you have to include cover into your considerations.

Maybe it's just me, but I typically keep my ranged-heavy AT on just War Walkers, and my Wraithknight. I rarely take Fire Dragons (who also have to contend with cover, the same way Bright Lances do).
I take the Walkers to get bright lances, as they are a strong weapon, available sparing in decent numbers. The only other place I can squeeze them into my list is with guardian platforms.
Bright lances are a great weapon over spamming S6, as they not only have effect on heavy tanks, but they put the hurt on those multi-wound T4 models such as Broadsides.

Well, I think bright lances are under-performing. Broadsides will definitely be placed in cover so that bright lances shot might bounce off. The same may hold for tanks.
Fire Dragons in Serpents provide a more direct approach.

I second Wuestenfux, dual Scatterlasers are amazing utility. S6 is the golden number, where you're able to hurt almost anything(only AV13/14 is beyond you).
If you need AT, go for dual Lances. Otherwise, go dual Scatters. Scatter/Star is an alright combo when you don't have Guide around and your meta is predominantly MEQ.

The same holds for Necrons' tesla annihilators. Fantastic weapon with no AP. The more dice you roll, the better.

Its worth noting that the Dual lance walkers are not the best at killing tanks, but they do it best at range for their points cost.

On paper, Scatter/Star pulls ahead in the infantry section, but once you factor in cover and Guide, I still think Scatter/Scatter wins over vs GEQ and MEQ, especially as 3+ cover is easy to get with GTG.

Nope. Scat star still beats that. 4 GEQS dead or 2 marines vs 3 dead marines or 4 GEQs. At best they are even. until you introduce 2+ saves.

Its better at 3+ saves also, and that is on its own.
Top that with the free twin link provided by the scatter laser and its the gun that brings the most pain.

Well, I never would take starcannons even against heavily armored units like Termies, since the number of dice you roll with scatterlasers is just crazy. Combine this with guide or prescience.

I generally wouldn't want Walkers firing at elitests anyways...
I personally like the dual Scatters, Dual Shurikens, or Dual Lances...and from those I think people hould decide what their army needs.
I personally favor durable platforms...so I don't run Walkers.

There is a world of difference between Ap2 and Ap6, I think its a worthwhile investment to include starcannon.

Right. The former starcannons with 3 shots would be an alternative, but with 2 shots they are not.

Which is never. It's actually pretty clear. Dual BLs if you want to hunt tanks, Scatter/Star if you're looking for anti-infantry and dual Scatters if you want the best utility. At least that's from where I'm standing.

This pretty much sums it up. I usually go with dual Scatter Lasers as there is a wide range of lists that I play against. Utility is king for me.

Just went to a tourney with fragons (to squads of 5 in serpents) and they did well....when they made it to there target. Each round they were targeted down, and then just...died. Always good to have lances as a back up plan.

Depends on what you're facing. If you run the points to damage ratio, or speed to points to damage ratio you get some interesting winners in the book.
