Thanks guys – it took me ages to get the red 'just right' for this army but I am very happy with it now.

If the glow of the gun, goes all the way down the gun. Would that not be bright enough to affect his armour? Other than that, I think these look absolutely amazing. The 1st one is You're Going Down! and the 2nd is Come Get Some!

I'm so envious of those Blood Angels. Amazing work

@ Link3n, cheers, I think you're right about the gun glow. I don't want the OSL to be over the top but a subtle bit on his right leg and maybe shoulder pad might look cool... Like I did on the shoulder of one of my Sangy Guardsmen:

@ Davy, thanks!

Rezyn, I got a PM asking for the method so I'll post my reply. It is a bit complicated, probably because I got there through experimentation but hey it works for me!

1. Prime whole model black (I use Vallejo primer through my airbrush)
2. Spray from above with Vallejo German Red Brown primer
3. Spray highlight areas (top of head, shoulder pads, upper edges of legs etc) with Vallejo German Dark Yellow primer

The above steps are essentially pre-shading / pre-highlighting but with colour instead of greyscale, which I found is important for a deep red.

4. Spray the whole model with Vallejo Model Air RLM 23 using thin layers. This is semi-transparent so will allow the previous layers to show through subtly.
5. Gloss coat (I hand brush Johnsons Klear but you could spray a gloss varnish)

At this point I paint any other areas that will have a black wash such as the joins between the armour plates, weapon casing, metallics etc.

6. Black wash (I use Daler Rowney acrylic ink mixed 1:10 with Johnsons Klear – you could try GW Nuln Oil mixed 50/50 with glaze medium)
7. Satin varnish
8. Edge highlight with Vallejo Model Color 130 Amarantha Red
9. Smaller edge highlight GW Vomit Brown

After that I continue highlighting / shading the other areas of the model. Sounds more complicated than it is, but I admit it's not the simplest process

I did a little picture tutorial of the process while I was painting my drop pod (except the wash step which wasn't necessary for the pod. You can see it here if you scroll down:

@Luthermax, thanks for replying. I definitely like what you did on the shoulder pad. I think a bit of the OSL affect on the edge of his right knee pad would look great, especially as it fades away to the rear of the gun. I would never want you to mess up such a great paint job though, in case I am wrong

Flipping amazing! I'm not a fan of the glow on any model but you out did yourself on these! Skin tones are perfect on the first model!

Yeah, you do that. I'm in dire need for some peer-pressure to end this bout of procrastination. I've had my next batch of BA's basecoated and ready to go since a few weeks.
